I am just very glad that my own personal sense of integrity has a much wider lens on reality and acceptance of others' differences.

Even stone headed men...

Know what I find interesting in this thread Hun?

No. What's that Suze?

That it's only men who seem to be saying that a prostitute who dislikes her clients lacks integrity.

Well I don't remember every post, but I think you're mostly right. Why do you suppose that is.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think it has to do with that famously fragile male ego.

How so?

Well, I think it really bothers them to think that they could fuck a woman, and she would hate them for it. I think it really gets to them for some reason.

I see what you mean, it's like they feel any woman should be grateful they stuck their cock in her.

Exactly, never mind that they seem to think it's fine to just go wham bam thank you Ma'am, somehow it shows a lack of integrity on her part if she doesn't appreciate them for doing her the honour of dumping their cum in her.

Sure seems like it, eh?

Yes it does. It's pretty sad when you think about it, and a really messed up way of seeing the world, as if it all revolves around their cocks. I guess it pisses them off that women just don't find their willys all that vitally important.

Well not to us, but I'm sure that they are important to straight girls.

Not really, at least that's not the impression I get from the girls at school. To them one cock is pretty much like another. As a rule, once they stick it, it doesn't really matter who's it is, it's pretty much the same. It was that way for me.

Wow, I didn't know that. I'm sure glad I'm gay, it just makes things so much easier.

That and the sex is way better.

Well I'll have to take your word for that.

It is.

That makes sense actually.

How so?

Mostly agreed except one cock is not pretty much like another. There is a wondrous variety out there.

Fast Reply from reading the OP -
Taking YOU out of the equation Hannah.

Prostitution is a perfectly viable career choice ... ish.  The way it is handled in many societies is more about abuse and taking advantage than it is about work.  So many other factors are often at play (race, socio-economic factors, age, geography, addiciont, etc) that it is sometimes the only option for some people.  When you are starving, you will eat dirt.

The problem with prostitution as it is utilized in this day and age is the Puritan values that interfere with the sex industry (not just in the USA, but "Puritan" is a good word).

Prostitution these days as I've seen it is ugly and harmful.set up.  Working in mental health, you see quite a lot of it.  But it is a skewed, self-selecting group (or court-selecting really).  However, there are other levels of prostitution rather than just street hooker / drug addict or professional LV prostitute.  There are many average gals "helping" fellows along.  There are women who see it as a positive thing and do it so for people who are not able to be involved with someone and to get a little cash for themselves.

So ... to answer your questions.  Prostitution is not about integrity.  Prostitution is often about poverty.  Poor people sometimes have to make decisions that wealthier people are not faced with.  That is what I find questionable.

best wishes,
sunshine

I have been one of the poorest people I know. Nothing to eat, no food, am very hungry and no food poor. I also considered getting down for cash but in the end I simply didnt want to cross the line into Whoreville. I couldnt bear crossing the line and being a ho. So I didnt and I survived some way or another. Kids who get macked out by adults didnt ho out consensually and this drives me crazy with heartbreak and rage. These poor kids growing up are in a different group I would say. Everyone has their own path and lines of what is their own integrity or not. People can move forward.

In some really fundamental ways I've no idea what that feels like. When a woman has sex, a part of a man *enters her body*. What on earth is that like? Just on that, alone, I reckon that I'd have a whole different view of the world. I've *never* had to trust someone that much, and I never will.

For that reason as just a start, a lot of this stuff is beyond what I can relate to. But I will repeat: the question of 'integrity' is *not* about some general world view of ethics. Who really gives a toss about that? It's about whether you hate yourself for doing what you do, as a prostitute. Or hating yourself for being a client of a prostitute.

It isn't about the rest of society . . . so stop picking some bullshit fight with 'society at large' in order to avoid the real fight you need to face. It's about [generic] you, and whether you like yourself, or not. That's the only thing that matters.

I disagree. I can see how one might think that is an applicable definition, but it isn't. I can easily see a situation wherein one does something they hate because they think it is the ethical thing to do, and thus in order to have integrity, they do it. So it is possible to be in that position because you have integrity.

A girl I knew used to work at the animal shelter, she helped with the euthanizing and disposal. She did it because she felt it was the right thing to do, and that it needed to be done. She also hated it, and herself for doing it, but as distasteful as it was to her, it was, according to her beliefs, the right thing to do. Therefore, hating herself for what she was doing was a sign of her integrity.

I just wanna point out that this poll is far from scientific. What do you expect a bunch of Ho's to say about sex for money.

'scuse Me?

I know I've got the minority opinion on this one, but I've got a much smaller opinion of the johns than I do the pros.  I can come up with such situations (feeding the starving child at home, for example) for why somebody would rent their ass out.  For the life of Me, I can't find a good enough reason for the clients to purchase it.

How about we ask about the morals of the johns for a change?

This is going to come straight out of left field, but I've read this post several times and each time I read it, the thought comes to mind of all sorts of things people knowingly do in this country (and others) that could constitute a lack of integrity, yet justify it.  How many of us still bought Nike's when it was discovered they used sweat-shop labor?   How many still buy Nike, even though they have not ceased sweat-shop manufacturing?

Is this any different than the johns who use prostitutes?  Perhaps in that it's indirectly purchasing a product made from desperate people in slave-like conditions, rather than directly buying and visibly seeing the person providing the product for sale.

Anyway, as I said, a bit out of left field but it made me ponder a bit.

As for this thread being about the OP, well the OP referenced herself in the first sentence of the OP, which of course is going to cause folks to relate the whole "integrity" question to her.

As for whether or not prostituting lacks integrity, no, but hopefully a person isn't selling his/her soul to do it. I do agree with the statements made that we've all lacked integrity at some point in our lives. Isn't that part of being human and learning life lessons?

Ahhyup.

And, were we really lacking integrity if we did something without the awareness we have now?

To over simplify......if a kid steals a candy bar from the grocery store at age 2 does that make them an untrustworthy thief forever? Many things I did in my past, could be considered the actions of a person lacking. I have changed, my awareness of self and the world has changed. Quite dramatically actually. For ME, the lack of integrity would be for me to do what I did in the past, again, knowing what I know now. I cannot beat myself up for poor choices I made when I was 20, at age 49. I can only be very glad I am not that person any longer and move on.

~FR~

I put that it does not necessarily mean someone does not have integrity. That would be like saying someone is a very trusted community position automatically has integrity, which we all know is not the case.

I knew a girl that put herself through college as an exclusive escort. She knew four languages, and was highly intelligent. Top dollar to business executives that came into town. She said that more of her time was as a classy companion at events, than actually on her back. She said that many of her clients wanted the companionship, and the sensuality, without any attachments or BS. Maybe that also speaks to how many relationships are these days, I am not sure.

I know if it were legalized and regulated it would remove a lot of the other criminal elements you see on the lower/cheaper end of prostitution, and with health inspections and counciling added in, the people involved would be better off too.

Likely not, but maybe.  I suppose it depends on the lack of awareness - some people like to keep their heads in the sand and choose to be unaware.  In those cases, integrity could be questioned, I suppose.  But if there was information (like the Nike example) that was completely unknown/hidden and then made known, no I'd say people were completely unaware and could not be faulted.  However, now that it is well known that Nike continues to use sweat shops, if people still choose to buy from them then yes, integrity could be (and should be) questioned.

I'm not a believer that anyone who has ever lacked integrity (and I contend that would be all of us) should never be trusted again. I've also certainly done things in earlier days that I am not proud of, and that definitely lacked integrity.  I have learned from them, changed my life, and moved on.

But I haven't seen anyone make that claim here - I haven't seen anyone say "You once did this and therefore you lack integrity and can never be trusted."  I think the OP made the statement that someone said that to her, but in reading the clarification of what was actually said, it was revealed the OP was not accurate.   I don't think anyone on this thread is saying, "Because you did this act in your past, you have no integrity."  Hey at least we're all in agreement about something for a change.

Except that was not the case. I read the thread in question (not something I recommend though the level of willful self-deception displayed in it is mind numbing).
what was said was:
quote:

When you can stop using men without regard to them as human beings and you can wash the cum stains from your intestinal track then come and talk to me about integrity and the failings of people. Till then, I aint gonna listen to you. Know what i mean.
And when it was pointed out that saying that was pretty childish, the response was
quote:

Oh BTW...while you're feeling so put upon by my hooker statement..It's the truth. You're casting stones about integrity..I thought it pertinent to point out the irony.

Now in the OP, the following statement was made
quote:

on a thread in p&r, someone pointed out that i used to be a prostitute as an argument as to why i was wrong. he then claimed it was to demonstrate that i had no integrity.
Be so kind as to explain to me how the latter is not an accurate summary of the former. I am really looking forward to this one.

Yes and no.  Personally, I see it in two different ways.  I know that I need (and I'm using the word need in the realistic sense, not confusing it with the word want) shoes more than I need sex.  Protecting My feet from the elements and possible injury is a lot higher up on My list than an orgasm.  Do I need shoes from Nike when I know what goes into having them made?  No.  Other people make shoes.

The comparison fades though because the lack of knowledge test just doesn't apply.  The johns would have to be living under a rock of some kind to think it's all about the Happy Hooker and no damage is being done.  On a priority scale, getting one's rocks off just doesn't come up high enough for Me to find good reasoning.
