I have frequently warned readers about the dangers of using brand-name personal care products. The vast majority of these products contain toxic chemical compounds like MIT that contribute to cancer, liver disorders and neurological diseases. In fact, this chemical, MIT, is just one of dozens of such chemicals that are found in personal care products.

Never go to a site with the name 'natural' or 'toxins' in it!
Remember, it's all a matter of concentration, since I presume they're talking about industrial exposure.
For example, bleach is a wonderful and cheap cleaning product; just don't use it in high concentrations or swallow it.
Likewise, unless you're allergic to it, 'MIT' in very low concentrations has not been shown to cause problems, especially since it's used externally and even washed off rapidly in shampoos.

While I do agree with tantriqu's point about concentration, you can see how your brand scores in the EWG's database: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/browse/shampoo/

EWG's Skin Deep is an online safety guide for cosmetics and personal care products, launched in 2004 to help people find safer products, with fewer ingredients that are hazardous or that haven't been thoroughly tested. Skin Deep combines product ingredient lists with information in more than 50 standard toxicity and regulatory databases. The database provides easy-to-navigate safety ratings for tens of thousands of personal care products.

Just forget about it like stef says. Thinking that anyone would ever hurt anyone else in the world is simply paranoia. How do you know neurotoxins are bad for you ?

We should also load up on HFCS and aspartame. </sarcasm>

Actually I make damn sure to rinse thoroughly, REALLY thoroughly.

If it's not true how do these articles get away with saying it is? Sure, sure, some have agenda's and what not, but I would think if you're bad mouthing name brand products as being toxic those name brand companies would not sit idly by.

As Tantriqe has said, a lot depends on concentration. Water is good for you in proper amounts. However, drinking too much water can kill you but that doesn't mean you have to stop drinking it. Too much water is considered a poison.

Just because something "can" be a poison doesn't make it one.

Please don't stop washing your hair with shampoo.
I'm really starting to worry here.
First you wanted ways to clean yourself without water and soap.
Then you wanted to stop using toothpaste, and now shampoo...
Millions of people use all these items every single day and they're fine.
Just relax. It will be ok.
It will.
Personally, I hear the siren sound of my Lush bath products calling my name...

I always wonder about the mental competence of people who believe everything they read and can't seem to figure anything out by themselves. With the OP, it is starting to get a bit ridiculous.

Well I'd choose a different brand of shampoo and conditioner. Not stop washing my hair lol. All though some people are a part of a movement called no poo , and you use baking soda and applecider vinager to wash your hair. People swear by it. But I have no intention of taking it up. I would just switch shampoo's. I also read on one of the links given here that pantene as far as the company knows tests their products on animals, and it makes me a little sad.

so which is it? You don't want to buy products because they test on animals....

or because you think aliens might be coming to insert little metal plates in your brain.....

~shudders at the acid/base reaction of baking soda & vinegar~

Stop cheaping out. GOOD quality products don't have harmful ingredients.

The point everyone is trying to make is that you read this stuff on the internet and then come here wondering if everything is going to kill you or if there is a cheaper way.

The products that have been out for a long time are not going to be harmful. You want to save money, buy VO5 at the grocery store when it is on sale for $.66.

Manufacturers don't care about these articles because most people aren't going to believe it. Someone was passing an email not that long ago that Loreal lipstick contained lead and would kill women who used it.

What everyone is trying to tell you is: Get a grip on reality.

I'm sorry but the majority of your questions seem to about stuff that you appear to be too lazy to look up yourself.

So why didn't you just say that in the first place and post it in the politics forum?

But, but, but, but they all contain water. Water is a known poison. Wikipedia said water can kill you.

Best shampoo I've used since The Body Shop quit making their coconut oil shampoo.

actually a lot of people do a lot of different things with their hair and they don't die just because they "cheap out" and don't use "quality" conventional products.
i hardly ever use shampoo; i use it maybe once a month. i'm a co-washer, which means i wash with conditioner.
i know several people who use baking soda and vinegar on their hair and it hasn't caused it to break out or fall off or have some horrible reaction.

you can get out of the box with your personal care products and not be a slob. geez louise, people.

TFTB, if you have a Whole Foods near you, or any other kind of natural health place, you can find all kinds of natural shampoos and conditioners that don't have particular chemicals in them. the shampoo i use every now and again is Kinky Curly Come Clean, and it's an all-natural shampoo without a lot of conventional ingredients. the ingredients are:
Purified water, organic mandarin orange fruit, organic marigold flower, organic white willow bark, organic sea kelp, c14-16 olefin sulfonate and cocamidopropyl betaine (coconut derived), citiric acid, sea salt, phenoxyethanol, natural fragrance.
not tested on animals, and gets your hair squeaky clean.
phenoxyethanol -- it is an eye irritant, so should be avoided around eyes or mouth, but it is not suspected of accumulating in the body, or of being an environmental hazard
c14-16 olefin sulfonate and cocamidopropyl betaine -- coconut derived surfactants that have a long track record of safety. they were more widely used before the introduction of sodium lauryl sulfate, which is cheaper to produce. it's still a surfactant, but is far more mild.

with a lot of chemicals like this, sure the concentration isn't so bad in the single product you use, but the manufacturing process is MUCH different, and by avoiding products with those chemicals, you remove yourself from that process. it's fairly simple...

some links on baking soda and vinegar for hair --
http://www.healthhomehappy.com/2009/07/washing-hair-with-baking-soda-and-vinegar.html
http://simplemom.net/how-to-clean-your-hair-without-shampoo/

apple cider vinegar can be a pretty good friend of curly hair, too, because it has a low (acidic) pH, which causes hair cuticles to close. it helps define curls and adds a lot of shine. it's actually a pretty common ingredient for natural hair care.

just because someone doesn't treat or handle their hair the way you do, doesn't mean they're automatically a cheapo slob who has no idea what they're doing.
shampoo makes my hair an absolute mess; it tangles up, frizzes, and gets completely out of hand. avoiding conventional shampoo has been one of the best things i've ever done for my hair.
