What exacly are you lifting for? Strength, more muscle? The two overlap a lot but you have to define what your goal is.

Because of my hip I've been walking with a cane for a number of years now. I've noticed that I've lost a lot of muscle mass and I'd really like to at least strengthen what I have an maybe prevent further loss.

Are you able to do squats or lunges? Squats are by far the best leg exercise there is. Which is why everybody hates doing them but loves the results. If you can do squats try it with your own body weight. Look at some videos of people doing them and see if your hip will allow you to do them.

If you go the gym route you can try squats with weight. If you can't do those I would recommend hack squats which work a little differently. If you can't do those I think the leg press machine, leg extension and leg curl machine will take care of your legs.

Squats are a big nono but lunges now THAT'S an idea! I used to do something similar in physio and it felt like a slice of heaven to my hip, not to mention the rest of my leg. No money to go to a gym but thank you, you're a sweetheart

What goals? I go to the gym because my whole body zings when I'm there. It'll carry on zinging for at least a day after I've been.

It feels good to eat well. It also feels good to use one's muscles and get the blood coursing around. That's it - that's all one needs to know. You just have to know how to enjoy your body.

Along with regular lunges try chair lunges. They allow you to target individual legs. So if you have one that's stronger than the other you can bring it up to match.

You're welcome.

so sitting at work all day is hell and you go home and sit infront of your computer long enough to make over 700 posts in 30 days.
You used to do something like lunges and it was heaven for your hip but it takes someone here to mention lunges before you remember that.
Hard to help some people isn't it?
Think about what is good for your body and do it. You know what works, have some discipline and do it

Nope I'm lying down - one of the perks of a laptop. Yeah I did stop, fucked up my knee after thwacking it against the sharp corner of my living room table. Don't recommend that btw in case anyone thinks it sounds cool. So for months I've been lying down as much as possible, it's the only thing my hip and knee agree on. So yeah I forgot, so sue me.

I forgot to give you some upper body workouts. Pullups for your back. You can turn your grip around and do chinups to work your biceps. Push ups with a wider hand placing for your chest. Diamond pushups and dips done from the edge of a chair or sofa for your tri's. I don't know what to tell you for your shoulders. I guess you could try lifting one end of a love seat and doing presses with that. As far as calves, you can do calf raises anywhere.

How people can stand getting their pubes waxed I really do not know!

I've had a full brazilian wax and it really didn't hurt at all but it left me with little bumps everywhere that I just didn't like the look of. They weren't red or itchy or anything like that...just little raised bumps.

With shaving I can at least get a silky smooth feeling. I'm just waiting for another groupon deal for laser removal to get it all permanently removed. Groupon always seems to have deals every few weeks for this that aren't bad in price.

Great thread!

Brazilians aren't a big deal to me - I have them done twice a month.  Exfoliate daily leaves things smooth.  I have my face waxed once a month. She uses a wax that works well with my sensitive skin, so I don't react to it.  She also has a shot of tequila ready for me when I arrive LOL!

Re: the ankle injury - a recumbent bike might help.  My left ankle is still messed up from my fall down the stairs a few years ago.  It gets better every year though - I actually can wear heels this year.  When I first fell and could not actually walk without a walker, my PT had me do a recumbent bike.  I started out really slow, for a short period of time, and didn't push it.

Re: hip stuff.  I was calling it hip pain but it turns out it's my sacroiliac joint.  I messed it up with my fall.  Sometimes the pain gets so great I can hardly take it, and I to go my chiropractor and he snaps it back into place.  Meanwhile, Pilates was out for me because it bugged me too much.  But I do the elliptical, treadmill and the Nautilus weights just fine without issue.

Re: Nails.  I get mine done twice a month.

Re: Boob reduction.  Since I've lost so much weight, it's been interesting because the "girth" of my body has completely shrunk down but I didn't lose any breast tissue.  This means my cup size has increased significantly, while there's less body to actually carry it.  I'm an abnormal size now, and the only supportive bras I can find are close to $100.  The shoulder/upper back pain are exhausting, and my doctor referred me to a surgeon just a couple of weeks ago, to discuss an insurance paid reduction.  I'd love to get to a C or D cup.

Hmm, what else?  No experience with facial peels but did microderm abrasion and responded badly to it - it burned my skin.  My skin is just way too sensitive.

Oh and as for whether or not people should push it at the gym - when I first started going, it was really stressful for me to get there.  I've never liked to exercise, I don't like to sweat, and I'm not a morning person (it wasn't working for me trying to go after work). So I got up at 5am, dragged myself there, and told myself I'm just going to move my body - that's it.  Movement is better than being home in bed.  That gave me NO pressure, and didn't add to the stress of going for a non-exerciser (well, former non-exerciser) like me.  Very slowly and gradually I increased it - no rush, no pressure, just movement, and a little more movement than last week, and so on.  Now, months later, I'm totally pushing it, having a ball, and really noticing significant results.  I think just going to the gym is better than not, and anything a person does for him/herself is a good thing.  We don't know what other people's stories are :)

LOL she is awesome.  I've been going to her for years.  The tequila is an added bonus this year.  She has this Patron coffee liqueur tequila which is awesome, so I'm one of her special clients who gets it.  Now she has it ready for me when I come in.  I'm so spoiled lol.

"Good Mornings"are exercises which help build the lower back (which helps give that nice "shelf butt" look that many fine models have) and the buttocks, but they do not involve squatting. You use a light weight on a barbell that is held behind your back. Basically, you just slip it several inches off your shoulder once you have it up there and then hold it in place. Feet shoulder width or hip width apart, and you slowly bend from the hips , going down (but not so far the weight slips off your back), then slowly come back up again. Like someone bowing a slow good morning.

Of course, the usual thing of laying on your back and doing thrusts and squeezes with both feet on the ground , in many varieties of foot positions, known generally as "buttock tucks" helps, too. Wall sits are lovely.

If you can find it (and if you Google long enough you can find it) there is an old set of exercises by a Japanese man called Makka Ho. There are people who teach classes but I am not sure if what they teach is what is in his book or not, because what is in his book, which are the real Makka Ho exercises, are not the same as what are in the newer books by the same name. If you can find his exercises, there are only about 4 of them, maybe 6. I don't remember for sure, now. They are based on poses that certain monks do, which are also natural poses for children and they can greatly help increase hip flexibility.

From Pilates, there is the basic stance: legs straight, but don't lock the knees, heels together and toes natural (don't let them point out or in or too straight forward. If they do, you are doing it wrong). Turn your thighs slightly outward without moving the rest of you. You'll know if you got it right as it disengages your thigh muscle and gives a serious workout to your pelvic floor and lower buttocks, upper back of inner thigh region.

Callanetics is a wonderful set of exercises for general body toning, which will help your flexibility and, well, you might not get a much bigger butt, but, it is bound to be firmer and rounder. Some libraries have the books, if not the CDs and tapes.

And, of course, there are ballet moves which at least don't involve weights. If you do them in the water, they can be done by persons with arthritis of the hips - some of them, anyway.

Hope you have found something helpful in this message.

They are good for the quads especially if you take it all the way down. Besides it's good for the ego. Where else are you going to lift 800 pounds?

What exacly are you lifting for? Strength, more muscle? The two overlap a lot but you have to define what your goal is.

What goals? I go to the gym because my whole body zings when I'm there. It'll carry on zinging for at least a day after I've been.

That feeling you get from lifting for most is secondary. Usually they either want to pack on muscle or gain strength. Or some combination of the two. Bodybuilders don't usually lift the same way as powerlifters. In order to get the results you want you have to know your goals. There have been plenty of times I have seen guys in the gym doing exercises that won't get them to thier goals. Doing tricep pushdowns (which is more for shaping than a mass builder) when he really wants huge guns and should be doing close grip bench presses or skullcrushers. Something far more effective.

You already have your goals in mind. Hers are a little different. But yeah you should always listen to your body... while you beat the hell out of it.

Thank you obeyWORKlisten.

Your post was full of things that I know I can do easily and lovely clear explanations.

I appreciate all those suggestions and as I have a barbell and weights here I can do this stuff at home as well as gym. I'd completely forgotten about *good mornings*!

I don't know about anyone else, but talking about all these things has given me a great motivational boost.

Sometimes the wear and tear of life can dull my motivation and energy. The interest and time that people have taken to encourage and suggest has given me a real injection of enthusiasm.

Thank you to everyone that's taken part in this thread with all their tips and expertise.

My next question is...... Can anyone suggest exercises that can trim a waist? I find crunches so boring and I'd like to find exercises that I could actually enjoy in the way that I do for other parts of my body.

Regards, agirl
