I think that would be inconsiderate to say the least, especially when Christmas is only a couple of weeks from the New Year.

It's just me, criticism is something I reserve for when people ask for it and I know it's appreciated because otherwise I find it tends to demotivate people.

It also wouldn't be in the spirit of the actual holiday, i.e. celebration of the birth of Christ, especially given the fact that he spent his entire life and sacrificed it for the sake of encouraging people not to make such judgments about others.

To be honest if I wanted to encourage him through a gift I'd go in completely the opposite direction and buy him a good bottle of Scotch or bourbon which could be construed as a reward for the effort he's made and/or it gives him something he can, if he so wishes, use to reward himself with later.

As for gifts I go for anything which is likely to have sentimental value or something I'm sure they will enjoy.

This thread brings back a memory.....ex-husband, young marrieds, baby, another baby on the way, his job required him to wear a shirt and tie every day, I stayed at home, washed and ironed his shirts.

He bought me a new iron for Christmas.

See, guy thinking: Wonderful gift, I'm making her life easier.

Girl thinking: You bought me a fucking iron??? for Christmas?????

[:D]
Ohhhhhhhh memories!!! The first Christmas Generic Dude and I spent together he got me a crock pot and a vacuum cleaner. I could have KILLED HIM. With 20 years of training he has vastly improved.

Although this year, with money being so tight, I told him to not get me anything. If anything, a new rechargeable spotlight flashlight. My old ones will not charge anymore.

LOL, yeah, that was a long time ago and I've come a long way since then. Now, I'd love a nice crock pot, or blender, or Cuisinart mixer. A Home Depot card would totally rock, lol.

I think it's the thoughts associated with the "practical" gift that decide. Crock pot, blender, etc. equals something yummy. Vacuum cleaner, carpet shampooer, equals yuk dirty carpets, lol.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Christmas gifts (12/5/2011 12:58:40 PM)

The reason I said bottle of tequila is because he told my girl friend that that was what he wanted, when she sounded him out.  I don't think it sounds like a good present either, I think it sounds kind of chintzy, but I am running out of ideas.  I had in mind spending $200 to $300, but I want it to be on something he will like.  His hobbies are hunting and fishing, he has lots (and I mean LOTS) of guns and fishing gear.  I don't know enough about either of these things to pick out something that he doesn't already have and would like.  I thought about a gift certificate to Cabellas (a big sports outfitter) but I want to support only local businesses this Christmas, plus I don't like giving gift certificates.  If any of you are fisherman and have a suggestion for the newest "must have", please let me know, though.  This is only our first Christmas.  He likes to cook, but his kitchen is very well equipped and he likes wine, but he has cases and cases already.  He was kind of looking at some noise cancelling headphones yesterday, but he mentioned that he would rarely use them.

My mother always said give a gift that you would like yourself, which is why I thought of the personal training sessions.  Personally, I would love it, and it really did make my ex happy.  It really didn't occur to me, until my friends mentioned it, that it could be construed as an insult, since I don't understand why anyone would not want to be more fit.

The whole gift giving thing can be so fraught with peril, especially in a new relationship.

The problem is he is the kind of person who buys what he wants himself. I bought personal training sessions for my ex husband, and he often told me it was the best gift anyone had ever given him. I was hoping to work the same magic here, but it is starting to sound like a bad idea. I had considered giving him a gift certificate for a local resort, but we both have animals, so it isn't that easy to get away. So, a bottle of tequila it is.

I am a bit surprised by this as being your final answer.
This is going to sound more critical than I am intending.

Your ex-husband liked the gift and because he did you were hoping this might be a good idea for this guy but since it might not be then you are going to buy him a bottle of tequila?

If I might make a suggestion couldn't you make him something or find some sort of gift that is a bit more personal, even if you have to ask him for his Christmas list?

How well do you know him?

This will be my Master and I's 3rd Christmas together.
3 Christmases and 3 years of Birthdays and he might not love every gift I have given Him in terms of the present itself, but He has always appreciated that I gave careful thought to selecting them and they came from my heart.

**My questions to Stella was probably meant for a separate thread and my apologies to the OP for a possible hijack so I've deleted my post**

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Christmas gifts (12/5/2011 1:00:31 PM)

To both our ways of thinking, the birth of Christ doesn't enter into it at all, of course.  Stella, I am not really clear what judgment you think I am making.  People of all fitness levels, from morbidly obese to world class athletes, benefit from personal training.  It is hard to push yourself enough on your own.
Nevertheless, Stella may have hit the nail on the head, except that he is more of a tequila guy.

Kaliko -> RE: Christmas gifts (12/5/2011 1:03:31 PM)

Our first Christmas together, my then husband bought me wooden spoons and a Jane Fonda workout video.

I don't recall being thrilled.

agirl -> RE: Christmas gifts (12/5/2011 1:04:05 PM)

I think Kirata was right on the button. If he's jumping up and down with enthusiasm about joining a gym or working out, then it might possibly be the perfect gift.

I'm making M's gift from bits and bobs from charity shops. It'll only last a day but I know he's going to laugh and laugh and enjoy it immensely and appreciate it for that day. He'll know exactly how much effort and time I've put into it the moment he claps eyes on it.

I appreciate getting things that I *need* as I always *need* something or other and never quite have enough money to go around. (My Dad has bought me the oil for my car's oil change after Xma,s and I'm thrilled to know that).... But M is well off and I like to give him things he can't get for himself or buy.

Does he have any hobbies? Cos that always helps.

eta..ok, just read your next post as I posted.....lol

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Christmas gifts (12/5/2011 1:06:52 PM)

Yep.  Hunting and fishing, but he is already well enough outfitted to open a small sporting goods store himself.  (24 fishing rods!!!).

What does he fish for and where?

Maybe I can help. Contact me on the other side if you wish.

Will do, Hill.  You've got mail

windchymes -> RE: Christmas gifts (12/5/2011 1:12:05 PM)

If he wants Tequila, then he should have Tequila. Maybe you could splurge on a really good kind, which I know is sort of a "duh" thought, don't mean to imply that you'd run out and buy a cheap bottle, lol. Maybe some with the real worm in the bottom, then some really nice shot glasses, some really good salt, etc. You could build a whole gift basket around it?

I know my feelings would not be hurt if someone got me a really good bottle of mezcal.

If you have the *man that has everything* it's hard if you want to actually BUY something. ( I'm not big on buying things)

One of the best gifts I got him for Xmas was the stapler. I got it because it was one thing I knew he hadn't tried before. It meant he got a new experience with me. Always a winning thing to offer M.

Is there anything in the personal category that might light up his face? ;)

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Christmas gifts (12/5/2011 1:26:16 PM)

I like the way you think.  Maybe tequila and something more "personal", not to be opened in front of the kids.

He has been talking about getting another tattoo, maybe tequila and a gift certificate for a good tattoo place.  I could call it the "get drunk and get a tattoo gift basket."  Although, of course, that is just a joke, he would not drink before getting ink done.  Maybe throw in something from Toys in Babeland, just to make it really decadent.

I hope Jimmy Buffett sees this, it's his next big hit: Why Don't We Get Drunk and Tattoo [:D]

You have return mail. If he already has a box full of those, let me know and I'll try to think of someting else.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Christmas gifts (12/5/2011 1:33:13 PM)

Tequila, tattoo session, something pornographic, along with a fishing lure and a Jimmy Buffet CD (thanks Windchyme), I think we have a winner!  The get drunk and get a tattoo basket will be perfect.  And it certainly is the polar opposite of personal training sessions.

I was playing Devil's advocate here being honest.. Your judgment is valid because it's cloaked in lots of intention and well meaning and people do give such gifts and having not had the benefit of the later posts I wasn't sure whether the fitness regime was due to a weight issue. I was trying probably not very well to see it from the worst case scenario from his perspective.

Having read the later posts my earlier comment here was wide of the mark, I apologize.

I agree with you that tequila is chintzy, but probably not as bad as say vodka. However I'll bow out given my previous misjudgement and hope that something comes to mind. Once again please accept my apologies.
