Toppingfrmbottom -> Can drinking 2 much sweet and low over the course of 2 days give you a sore throat? (12/20/2011 6:39:12 AM)

Sunday from 5 to 7:30 I was pounding down ice tea at Dave and Buster's with 2 sweet and low's a tea, I must of had about 10, and then Monday was a special treat, Daddy's company treated Daddy to a free 50 dollar food card for X mas, and he took the whole family to dinner, and I only drink ice tea, and I had about 6 ice tea's 2 packets each, and today my throat is beginning to get sore.

To be fair it was feeling a bit rough, even before all the ice tea, because I been doing a lot of talking and that will bring on a scratchy voice and a sore throat too, but I was wondering if maybe the sweet and low's had even a small hand in it too.

can't say I've ever heard of that but it also sounds like you're drinking A LOT of sugar even if it is sweet n low. Can't possibly be healthy.

Sweetnlow is nasty anyway -- you'd be better off at the minimum with equal or i would go with splenda or truvia.

As for contributing to the sore throat, i doubt it but ya never know.

No, you are probably coming down with a cold or something.

Just make sure you don't run a fever or have white spots on it (Signs of Strep throat).

Well it was two special occasions, not something we normally do, and we're now back to boring and stead fast as usual lol. I do agree though that it would not be healthy to do regularly.

I also was very active Monday, so I think i more than worked off our two days of special events lol.

No, sweet n low can't cause it. But....stripping your throat by drinking something cold quickly, in large amounts, can. I hope you aren't getting a cold...horrid time of year to have one come up and all that.

*oh* if you don't mind my asking...are you diabetic? The desire to drink a lot of liquid so quickly makes me wonder(if you have had someone else ask and answered sorry if I missed it)

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Can drinking 2 much sweet and low over the course of 2 days give you a sore throat? (12/20/2011 10:01:46 AM)

Yes I am. But I was also very active through out the night and I get hot and thirsty being overweight and used to being inactive. And it's just a hand to mouth habit to drink so much, plus I enjoy a good ice tea on top of being active all night, or sitting at the table eating.

Yeah, it is a horrible time to get a cold. Daddy gets sick sometimes during this time of year cause poeple who can't take off work or won't come in sick as a dog and share their "joyous gift" with every one and unfortunately living in close quarters with Daddy means he shares it with me, and sometimes after giving it to me I give it back to him.

Yes, I know how that back and forth thing works as I spend a lot of time with kids. Nothing works as well at making a person sick as kids do hahaha. I asked the diabetic question because I am too and I have more than once drank something quickly and ended up feeling like I was inhaling sandpaper. The doc calling it stripping. You wouldn't think something so close to water could strip your throat and make it feel bad, but because I have done it more than once I take it that she is right about it.

Artificial Sweeteners Ruin Your Body's Ability to Count Calories

International Journal of Obesity July 2004;28(7) Pages 933-935

A study revealed that eating artificially sweetened foods and drinking sweetened beverages might hinder your body's ability to estimate calorie intake, thus boosting your inclination to overindulge.

First Study on Artificial Sweeteners

The first group of rats were given two liquids, both of which contained natural high-calorie sweeteners

The second group of rats were given two liquids, one that was sweetened with saccharin

Both groups were given a sweet, high-calorie chocolate-flavored snack after 10 days into the study

Findings From the Study

Rats that were given the artificially flavored liquids had a more difficult time differentiating their calorie intake and displayed the tendency to overeat

The rats given artificially sweetened drinks were found to consume three times more calories than rats that didn't receive any sweeteners in their drinks

Second Study on Artificial Sweeteners

For the duration of 30 days, two groups of rats were fed their regular food along with a high-calorie supplement.

One group was given a supplement similar the heavy consistency of chocolate pudding

The other group was given a supplement that had the consistency of chocolate milk

Findings From the Study

The rats that were given the chocolate milk-like supplement experienced a notable weight gain over the rats who received the pudding-like supplement.

Researchers concluded that the rats who were given the milk-like supplement had a harder time estimating calories than the rats that were given the pudding-like supplement

Researchers compared the results of this study to the Pavlovian theory where dogs were conditioned to associate the ringing of a bell to food. Researchers also stated that the rats in the study showed a similar relationship between the taste or texture of a food and the number of calories it contained.

Researchers came to the conclusion that an inability to distinguish calorie intake was brought on by artificial sweeteners.

On the other hand, the sweetener industry viewed the results of the study as inconclusive because of the fact that it was tested solely on animals. They also stated that sweeteners played an active part in weight loss and were a valuable tool for weight control.

Another spokesperson for the sweetener industry added that it wasn't necessary to cut back on artificial sweeteners because the FDA previously approved them.

TFTB,

I've posted just one of many reasons not to use artificial sweeteners. Have you tried stevia? You can buy this in a liquid or powder and add it to regular unsweetened tea.

My favorite way to use Stevia is in Celestial Seasonings tea Anti-oxidant line. My favorite is the Dragon Fruit Melon. I go through a lot of tea, so I dilute it considerably - for me, it's just a way to flavor the water. I use one bag to make a quart of ice tea.

Green tea is more delicate than black tea - follow the brew time directions.

Best,

KK

Yes, actually a long time ago the dr got suspicious that I was heading for diabetes cause I told her I was thirsty all the time and no matter how much water I drank, the "thirst" wasn't getting any better or going away, cause un ending thirst is a D or pre D sign indicater.

I could try it, I tried some liquid stevia at a health food store when they had free samples, but didn't like it so maybe i'd like the powder form. I just don't want to buy and carry stevia with me all the time just in case I MIGHT go eat out,  if you know you're going out to eat it's not a problem, but we always end up eating out mostly as a hey I am hungry, how're you? lets eat out? ok lets eat out deal, it wasn't planned.

it's why I use sweet and low.

Did your doctor also warn you that you can make yourself sicker, even die, if you drink to much liqiud?

No, but I have heard of it, it's called water toxicity, and a lady who was trying to win something for her kids for christmas or something got into a water drinking contest, and died.

hey TFB
I've never heard of artificial sweetener causing a sore throat--I'd agree with the others who said, it's probably something else you picked up. 'tis the season.  colds, strep, norovirus, influenza--all hits of the wintertime!

barelynangel -> RE: Can drinking 2 much sweet and low over the course of 2 days give you a sore throat? (12/20/2011 7:59:02 PM)

I doubt TFB needs to worry about water toxicity as she is drinking throughout the day as well as she eats also.  Unless, of course TFB, you are drinking a couple of GALLONS of water in 5-10  minutes, then you need to worry about it.
