I'll  talk to her again after the holidays. we might have had a mis understanding in the mix somewhere.

it was 60 for every meal plan you wanted, that gets stupid after a while, but there are diabetic groups and magazines and stuff you can look at. I liked diabetic living but some of their snacks confused me like one said take half a graym cracker, put cream cheese on it, and then 3 grapes cut  in half and  I was like huh?????????/ doesn't sound healthy to me.  But that's where the one call every now and then to the dietician comes in handy, I can always double check a snack that don't sound right with them.

It isn't a matter of not understanding diabetes, it is a matter of wanting/needing a defined diet to follow.  Some people need that, the menu plan that says "eat this, this and this."

TFB, you are on Medicare.  If Kaiser isn't providing for your needs correctly, you can change to someone one else.  I wasn't restricted to my insurance carrier's diabetes education, I went to my local Regional Diabetes Center, which gets its information and works closely with the American Diabetes Association.  Honestly, if it was some insurance company's program, I would have complained, too easy for them to bias things.  The RDC doesn't care who your insurance company is or what is or is not covered, they are dealing with the patient.

Look, the bottom line here is that you want a nutritionist and your insurance company doesn't want to pay for it.  Medicare HAS APPROVED gastric bypass surgery for weight loss in diabetics, so apparently your doctor and your insurance company aren't communicating properly since weight loss/nutrition is a big part of managing diabetes, it isn't just about weight loss.  Your doctor needs to present it to the insurance company as a diabetes issue, not a weight loss issue.  If they deny it, she (her office) needs to appeal the decision.  If she isn't willing to do that, get a new doctor.  If it isn't possible to get it approved, save up and spend the 60 bucks and be done with it.

Well, actually one of the side effects of Januvia is weight gain, not weight loss.  It also can sometimes having the side effect of restarting Menses in post menopausal women.  The up side is that it works very well when paired with Metformin.

TFB,

Just like you had to just do it with the cooking for yourself instead of eating tv dinners, the same goes true for deciding what you eat.  Make small changes.  For example, give up fried foods, or cream sauces.  Cut back on dairy.

Join weight watchers.  Their point system works for a lot of people.

It would be nice to be able to meet with a nutritionist, but it isn't like you can't do it yourself.  It's great to use the diabetic recipes when you can, but those are really just eating more balanced meals.  A nutritionist is going to tell you that 1/2 your plate should be healthy vegetables, 1/4 protein, 1/4 complex carbs.

I've checked the side effects and never saw the weight gain one, can you show me where you saw that.  Mine is paired with metformin so maybe that makes a difference.  And it does have an appetite suppresant in it from what i am understanding.

I would be interested in reading about the weight gain part.  As i am not post-menopasal, that isn't something i need to worry about.

Yeah, I'm just not sure what is a starchy veggie and what isn't and for that i  WOULD be willing to take a class, I was scheduled for a diabetic nutrition class and botched the date and it was the day before I thought it was, so I need to try to get back into that class.

I get the divide the plate,  it's just  coming up with those combinations.

Most  dairy I eat is yogurt,  and it's become an infrequent treat, just cause I don't always remember to eat it.  I'd love to learn to make your own yogurt though. Greek or regular.

The one half graham cracker with a teaspoon of cream cheese and a few grapes is a healthy snack if you compare it to other sweets. It's a lot healthier to have that then to have a muffin with hundreds of calories and all white flour or chocolate chip cookies. This doesn't mean you can eat three dozen of them, it means when you have a craving for sweets, this is a much healthier alternative.

Because nobody wants to go the rest of their life only eating celery and plain grilled chicken, we want other things and eventually will break down and have them. Graham crackers are whole wheat, three half grapes have hardly any sugar, and that little bit of cream cheese gives you the feeling of eating pudding in a much better form.

but the cholesterol in eggs (I think) is the good cholesterol. I think they finally decided that eggs just got a bad rap.

The average amount of cholesterol found in one large egg is 186 milligrams, a level 14% lower than recorded in the last analysis. A large egg has, on average, 41 international units of vitamin D, 64% higher than found last time.

However, the message is still moderation. "It's still one egg a day," Jacob Exler, PhD, a nutritionist with the Nutrient Data Laboratory at the USDA Agricultural Research Service, tells WebMD. He points to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010, which recommend getting less than 300 milligrams a day of dietary cholesterol.
