Did the police have any way of knowing that? Do you think they should have waited until he shot at a couple of kids to see if the bullets were dangerous first?

Yes. He might not have shot. Or he might have missed purposely.

And being fired at from a distance runs less lethal risk than being fired at from nearby. So the best the police could have done would have been to run away.

Also, a police officer's best defense is to be unarmed. People are less likely to shoot at unarmed officers.

Even in the UK where few officers are armed, this isnt the case.

IMO,toy guns and replica guns ,pellet shooting or fake,should be only made with neon orange or neon green plastic.

This is a tragedy that was possibly preventable.Some aren`t though.

Status: offline 		While we can sit here and say if the police had only done this,he'd still be alive.But people like you too readily forget things like this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westside_Middle_School_massacre has happened before.If it had been one of your kids these 2 were aiming at,would you rather have had a policeman shoot them first if the cops had the chance or wait and see what might happen?I know my choice and it isn't for the police to not do their job by running away.

Didn't Calif. ban toy guns ? Seems I remember a Carlin bit from a bit on that. Real guns are legal, toy guns are banned...in Cal.

Well hey, nothing worse than being shot and killed while really being unarmed. (toy) It's ok though if you are.

Status: offline 		At that age we took my son to a big paintball tournament and he picked the damn thing up while in the car, where it looked to all passerbys as if he had a real gun. Stomping on brakes, threatening to confiscate the thing and miss the tournament if he didn't put it back in the bag for the rest of the ride. He seriously believed a cop could tell through a car window that it was paintball.

I blame the parents for allowing him this on the street.

Status: offline 		Fifteen year olds tend to believe they are bullet proof and will never die. Heck, 20 somethings often feel the same. It's an awful tragedy, but hardly the fault of the police who only did what they were forced to do.

They had those, they were called tasers. People complained about the use of the "less lethal" option, so this is what we end up with.

I did. I was in 8th grade at 13. In 8th grade at 15... aiming a (pellet) gun at a cop... the kid was not a candidate for MENSA, that's for sure.
