I could see them investing in some tranq guns though for some situations.

Gotta disagree with ya on this one Ron.

Hand a psycho a loaded Glock and put em near a crowd. Shoot em in the ass with a tranq gun and they'll still mow down a dozen people before they hit the ground.

This happens with toy guns, every once in a while.

IMO,toy guns and replica guns ,pellet shooting or fake, should be only made with neon orange or neon green plastic.

This is a tragedy that was possibly preventable. Some aren`t though.

A few weeks before Xmas 3 of the 4 boys were outside playing with their plastic guns. I thought they looked too 'real' from where I was watching by the window but couldn't quite figure out what was nagging me about them so I went outside to investigate. Turns out they had taken black sharpies pens and colored in the orange neon tips to make it look like the guns were real. Even though I am VERY pro gun, I told those boys exactly what could happen to them by their action then I took their guns. They were not happy but then I'm not their friend (they have enough friends) .. I'm their grandma.

Responsible parenting (or grandparenting) is much more effective than damn near anything else. Death by stupidity is not something I want to see for any of my grandchildren or anyone elses grandchildren.

I pass this along so that other responsible adults can recognize the creative endeavors of children who are a wee bit too smart and creative for their own good.

The quickest way I know to get shot is make a cop protect himself.

Toy or not, that is what happened. The kid, who MUST have known better than bring a TOY gun to school, was told to put the weapon down. Instead, he pointed it at the officers.

Very pointedly : A policeman who has been shot cannot protect anyone. You don't have to like it for it to be that way.

This incident is beyond self defense. Shooting this child defended every child and staff member on campus. And not too many steps later, it also defends YOU, This incident falls under the rubric of "protect and serve". It is one thing to not care too much for the Police. Hiya. It is another to say they should have done something other than the job when the chips were down.

I have been thinking about this today, i grew up on a farm and my father had a shotgun (for the rare times when it was needed).. my 2 brothers and i never got toy guns as kids.. we never touched my fathers shot gun, we never learned how to use it and we had no curiousity about it...

I wonder if giving kids toy guns gives them the wrong idea that guns are toys.. I wonder if there is some correlation to gun accidents (where kids or teen agers) just dont take guns seriously and they horse around with them and try to be the big guy with the gun and dont mess with me attitude.. that toy guns might have dulled the danger to them of real guns.. just sorta thinking out loud on this..

On the other "gun thread" a woman defends herself, her child and her home from an intruder and people complain about the proliferation of guns and how the intruder was "someone's son". Here a teenager aims what appears to be a deadly weapon at police and refuses to drop it and is shot and yet the police are chastised.

What the fuck is wrong with this place?

At any distance at all, that airgun looks just like a glock. If the kid didn't put it down the moment he was told to by the cops then sadly they have to nail him.

My heart goes out to the cops on this one.

I just saw this on the news. The kid had a PELLET gun....hardly a lethal weapon.

Easy enough to know that in hindsight, a different thing if it is aimed at you from a distance.

Did the police have any way of knowing that? Do you think they should have waited until he shot at a couple of kids to see if the bullets were dangerous first?

Yes. He might not have shot. Or he might have missed purposely.
Or he might have shot a few kids and then they would have know for sure the gun was real.

And being fired at from a distance runs less lethal risk than being fired at from nearby. So the best the police could have done would have been to run away.
And leave the kids unprotected? Yea, that would have gone over well.

Also, a police officer's best defense is to be unarmed. People are less likely to shoot at unarmed officers.
Depends on why the guy is waving the gun around in the first place.

The 8th grader was not Charles de Menendez.

In many countries, not just the United States, if you point something which looks like a gun at a policeman it's not going to lead to a happy ending.

Germany 2009... Germany will face pressure to re-evaluate its already tough gun laws in the wake of today's school shooting near Stuttgart, in which at least 16 people have died, including the teenage gunman.

According to Spiegel online, the student's family kept some 18 different weapons at home.

Germany 2002... In 2002 Germany's worst school massacre took place in the eastern city of Erfurt, when a disgruntled ex-pupil shot dead 17 people, including himself.

Germany 2006... In 2006 an 18-year-old pupil in the north-western town of Emsdetten injured 37 people, then killed himself.

Guess binymph thinks its fine for kids to have guns too. After all, I am applying the same logic she did... assuming.

The difference in the 2 is this.

One incident was stupid criminal activity which led to death of the perpetrator.

The other incident was stupid criminal activity which led to the death of the perpetrator.

Based on the article in the Associated Press the kid came to school, punched some kid in the face and the pulled out the "gun". One of the faculty saw this, the school was put on lockdown and the police were called and told there was an "armed student" in the school.

When the officers showed up, they ordered the student to drop his gun, he refused and pointed it at them. Two officers fired three shots, killing him.

Assuming this information is correct - I can't fault the actions of the officers in any way.

Responding to a call of an armed student in a school has to be among a police officer's worst nightmares. Why Jamie Gonzalez refused to comply when two police officers pointed their guns at him and ordered him to drop his weapon is something we'll never know - but that refusal is what cost him his life and was his own choice.

I've explained to a bunch of kids a number of times over the years that at the point where the police have their firearms out and are shouting at you - don't make any sudden movements, don't run, don't joke around, freeze and do exactly what they say. It doesn't matter if you've done nothing wrong. At the point an officer has drawn his sidearm, they're already expecting they may have to use lethal force. Defuse the situation, don't pour gasoline on the fire.
