Of course 99% of my customers make screwy faces when I even whisper 'bdsm' in regards to the book. I also find myself hard pressed to really give them a vanilla-accurate assessment of how graphic or extream the book's content is, given that most of it seems rediculously tame to me.

The fact that it is completely unrealistic doesn't seem to occure to most of my readers, which makes me sad, they seem to really like the way BDSM is demonized, and makes 'Christian' a 'bad guy'.

How would you guys describe or rate this book to vanilla friends?

To be honest, I didn't like it, really badly written and one dimensional, and what a predictable plot...

But to describe it to a vanilla audience and to get them to read it, I would possibly declare it as a bodice ripper that's a bit more adventurous and includes alternative sexual practices, Barbara Cartland with an unexpected twist, an underground success and it found it's way into the mainstream and is catching on fast.

Not how I feel about it, but shooting from the hip and slapping some PR labels on that help to sell.

Stephenie Meyer is the original creator of the Edward and Isabella characters.

The 50 Shades of Grey is a spin off from the Vampire books, fan fiction and was first published as fan fiction, that's why she had the names and later changed them.

I hate bad writing, whatever the topic. From what I've seen, it's very bad writing.

That is my view too. I read it over 3 evenings in bed. It's okay. I found I wanted to know what happened in the end although you don't and I'm not buying volumes 2 and 3. I like happy endings.
I agree that dominant men perfer someone naturally sub or who is submissive but may have never done it but they can draw it out of her. If someone genuinely does not want what you have to give her that must be very frustrating. If she gives you what you need because she loves you or because you keep her then I don't think that's likely to be as satisfactory long term. If you both need what the other is it's so much nicer and easier. Such a burden to be submissive sometimes.

The more I hear my friends talking about this book, the more frustrated I am getting. This is not a book about BDSM!! Of course, because they have heard the hype about it being so, and because it's so out of their norm, they believe it is. I'm about ready to out myself to them just to explain the differences, but somehow I don't think it would even make a difference. I really think one has to live the life to truly know what it is.

And so sorry I started the other thread. Holy moly..didn't know I would get so reprimanded. I had searched for one before I started mine, and nothing came up.

Yes, it surprised me too. You often do get several threads on a topic. You'll have to consider yourself thoroughly spanked over it.

I don't think it is a bad description of what a controlling dominant man might want or his contract and it shows how someone not sub finds it so hard to accept how things can be with someone dominant. I didn't think it was that inaccurate and it's got a lot about consent in it. The problem between them is the girl is not submissive. I find it the other way round if I ever try to go out with someone lovely but who is not dominant. It's very difficult and very frustrating and very sad.

For shame LadyConstanze - Barbara Cartlands heroines didn't have sex until after they fell in love and got married(lol)

and I'm currently reading the first one and find the feelings of the heroine close to how i felt when i met my first dom. Very ambivalent but very intreged and sexually charged.
As for the story line ? - I'm enjoying it a lot.
and for describing it to vanilla friends - it seems to me that it would be fairly close in content to some peoples experience of bdsm. Not mine necessarily - though all the money would have been nice.
Since i read for entertainment, not a template of how to live my relationships, i think the books are fun and enjoyable.

and for the record, i read the first Twilight and wanted to thump Bella up the side of the head. What an immature twit!

I read about this book here and have a copy from the library. I doubt I will waste my time reading it, I have skimmed it. It follows a very typical romance novel formula, only with a BDSM theme. Big whoop. To me, a romance novel is a romance novel, is a romance novel. The men are always rich and powerful, and of course sexy, "masterful" men, and the women are just smitten with them. Nothing new here but I guess the author did some homework into BDSM.

A lot of hype about not much. Vanillas seem to enjoy it, though.

I finished reading all three - and still enjoyed them. Not what i would call a bdsm novel at all, but more kinky fuckery - to use a term from the book . But a lot of fun to read.

After reading a few of the replies to this, I have to agree it is more a romance with an introduction to bdsm. I am far from experienced however I have read several bdsm novels to know the difference. I will say that it is nice to be able to talk to my friends about it. It helps me gauge their interest, will they think I am crazy if I confess I want to be dominated in so many dark ways?... It has helped open the conversation a bit however it has also helped me see how close minded some people can be, that is the hard part because I can't help but feel judged. But as a whole I have very much enjoyed the books!

I have read all three and enjoyed them overall for what they are which is romance with some bdsm elements tossed in.

I just read all three books and I am far from vanilla and yet, I liked the books.

Take it for what it is; a love story with BDSM elements thrown in. Nothing more, nothing less. It is not great literature, just a feel good, idealized romance.

I find it amusing that people are so upset about it not being BDSM enough. It is what it is.

Rather than make a new thread, I thought I'd post on this one, as my question is a bit related.

First, I lurk frequently, but never post. Here's number 1 for me.

My question is this - 50 Shades seems to be pretty poorly reviewed in regards to the actual writing and story of it. So what are some better novels that you can suggest? I've seen the Rice Beauty books mentioned, and I'll be sure to check those out. But just briefly looking at Amazon, it seems there are loads of "BDSM novels"...many of which, I am sure, are pretty awful. I read one recently which ranked up there with some of the worst books I've ever read. It had the old trope of "English manor house/BDSM palace" and was populated by people who apparently do nothing but go to sex parties and hang out in fabulous mansions all day. Does no one work in these worlds?

I'm looking for well written substance as well as kink. A good novel, as just short, one handed reads are pretty easy to find. :)
