Unless you can think of a better way of transporting supplies (often weighing over 100 kilos) 3 tool boxes, spare parts and briefcases to and from various suppliers and three shops I would like to know how my car is involved in this. My car is 100% necessary for me to do my job and keep a roof over my and my loved ones heads. Unless you are in a war or living in a war zone a gun is NOT a necessity, it is a stupid vanity for people who can't see how dangerous they are and how much harm they cause.
There is no such thing as an unnecessary comment against gun ownership

BULLSHIT!

Having one has saved my ass before. It has also fed the family and noone has been hurt

A gun is a tool. Your car is a tool. You're more likely to be injured or die in a car accident than with a gun.

quote:

The fact is that there is much more harm done by cars than there is by guns. There are more than 52 times more automobile accidents than gun incidents in the United States. These result in 41 times more injuries by car than by gun, and cars kill more than 150% more people than guns.

Keep in mind that death or injury by firearm includes criminal activity, suicides, accidental discharges, gun malfunctions, citizen self-defense, and police shootings.

Don't like guns, don't get one. Whatever your political agenda is here, it's not going to change my mind about my rights to protect myself and my home.

Statistics are a tool too and those stats are so pointless they are laughable. Of course car accidents outweigh gun accidents, 100s of millions of people use their cars every day, the point is that a car is not a tool designed to kill, a gun is. I don't want to own anything whose main purpose is to kill

Actually, the vast majority of firearms are intended to kill nothing more dangerous than circles on a piece of paper.

Of course, you could always live someplace where you can be arrested for hitting a burglar who has broken into your house.

I think you should ask your master to get you something from here as a graduation present.

Those are cool! I've seen the paper ones and I thought they looked like fun.

He said I was a good girl and deserved a spanking. [;)]

Awesome link, RedMagic!

And congratulations, OsideGirl! Aside from my airsoft target pistol (which shoots very nonlethal plastic BB's, for those unfamiliar with them) I will more than likely never own a gun, but I admire the skill it takes to use one safely and well.

Thank you! Master plays on an airsoft team, so I'm very familiar.

Congratulations. I have found myself very relaxed when I shoot. I take it so seriously that I calm myself to a level of almost meditation. Greatest way to find peace ironically enough!

Have fun!

That's what bench rest shooting can be like. It's just you, the scope, the target image down range and your spot weld. You pay so much attention to slowing your breathing and heart rate and feeling the wind that sometimes while you're in a zone, you barely notice the gun fire.

sunshinemiss -> RE: Completely off topic (4/11/2012 4:12:56 AM)

That's interesting, Hill Will. The police officer who was teaching the shooting class I was taking was a bit worried about me. Everyone else was "HEY this is COOL!" When he asked me why I hadn't picked up the gun yet, I said something about it being a serious moment and I was going to respect the reality of it. I've only gone shooting a few times, but each time I've had the same reaction. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one!

FrostedFlake -> RE: Completely off topic (4/11/2012 5:49:24 AM)

100%! I want you on my side, when the Zombies come.

Ignore hardcybermaster. From his profile : "just here to annoy cliques and question cliches, feel free to ignore me".

The Makarov is probably an excellent weapon. Getting to know it and making sure it works right is an excellent idea. I can't comment on it in particular, but, I have my doubts about any weapon that headspaces on the case mouth. The case in never the exact correct length and that throws off the point of impact. I prefer a wheel gun for that reason and because a misfire can be addressed without using two hands and because it can be carried (or stored) chamber empty without having to use both hands to put a round under the hammer. Wheel guns have their shortcomings also, of course, but I feel the way I do. You may wish to think about a different weapon in future.

Just, y'know, FYI.

And congrats!

You're not alone at all, I have a healthy respect for guns. My sons have taken me shooting, I have a very hard time picking up the gun and using it. I'll shoot while taking their instruction and then I put it down when i've had enough for that round, it might be before the bullets are gone, but when I'm done for that moment I'm done. I have no desire to keep the thing in my hand when I'm not totally ok with having it there. They think it's funny because I'll just abruptly say "Ok, that's it for me, someone else can finish mine", but it just seems very personal and intimate to me to be using a gun, and I only want to do it on my terms. Here I thought I was the only one!

I'd like to get better at it and will probably shoot more, but I don't think I'll ever lose the feeling of gravity I get in the pit of my stomach at actually having it in my hand and then using it. I don't think I want to lose that actually...

Pay no mind to the anti guns zealots. Those pussies have been trying to deprive us of our Constitutional right since even before the ink was dry.

I enjoy shooting, but I always have to take a deep breath before I pick it up. The range we shoot at is militant about gun safety, so the safety habits are being ingrained. (It's staffed by certified range masters)

One of our friends was a firearm instructor in the Marines and he came shooting with us last time. He was laying on the ground with a bag rest. He was amazing to watch. You could literally see his body relax and it looked like he was melting into the sand. His target was freaking amazing too.

I've shot a revolver before and for some reason I just like the semi-autos better. The Makarov has a reputation of being extremely reliable, easy to repair and very accurate. In the words of a friend, "it was designed to be kicked down a muddy street and still perform". I chose carefully based on the feedback I received from others and the way it fits in my hand.

One of the other factors was my comfort level with rapid fire. While I did really well with 1911, I felt like I had to take myself through pulling the trigger (Breath out, don't clench, you know there's going to be a big bang) and I felt that if confronted, I might be to slow on the trigger. I'll probably get a 1911 later on for target shooting.

Thank you Liz. I've never understood people that think that there's more honor in being a victim than there is in preventing yourself from becoming a victim.

There's been 10 break ins near us in the past few weeks. They've all been during the daytime and on a weekday. They knock on the front door and if no one answers they go around back and break in. If you answer the door they push their way in.
