OsideGirl -> RE: Completely off topic (4/11/2012 9:21:59 AM)

I also wanted to add:

In the state of California, there are only two places where I'm legally allowed to have my handgun loaded. Inside my home (that right ends at the door jam) and at the shooting table at a gun range.

At the gun range, weapons must be pointed down range at all times. The Range Masters are militant about that rule. If you swing that weapon so much as an inch off course, they're on you. A gun cannot be loaded until it at the table. If a gun leaves the shooting table, it must be unloaded. During a cease fire all weapons must be unloaded and all shooters must step away from the table. Under those conditions, the only way someone would be shot is if they ran onto the range during live fire.

In my home, I have the right to shoot someone who enters my home illegally. I think that's pretty cut and dried. If you're breaking into my home, you deserve to be shot.

We don't have children. We have two dogs, but they can't reach the gun safe and they don't have thumbs anyway. Out of our group of friends, there is only one child under the age of 18. He's 12 and his father was a firearms instructor in the Marines.

We have two gun safes and we use them.

Yeah, I could accidentally shoot myself while cleaning my gun. But, that would be my own damned fault and I'm more likely to lose a finger using the circular saw or be in a car accident.

Yeah, it could be used against me. But, I'd rather have a chance to defend myself than be a passive victim. Again, I have a better chance of my car being stolen and used in a high speed chase.

Since, it is illegal to carry a loaded weapon anywhere besides inside my own doors and at the shooting table.....the chances of shooting someone that doesn't deserve it are pretty much nil.

This assumption that anybody who decides to get a gun hasn't thought about and understands the responsibility is just arrogant.

couple of points

If you're breaking into my home, you deserve to be shot.

we will have to agree to differ on this one, I reckon the vast majority of burglars are after stuff, likes phones, jewelry cash etc, they are not there to kill you. Most burglars will run a mile as soon as they think there is someone in the house or that they have woken the householders up. You are only really in any danger if you go to confront the perp but you yanks have this idea that it's worth killing someone and it's worth putting your own life at risk to protect a few bucks and a mobile phone.
secondly

We have two gun safes and we use them.

everyone on CM says how careful they are, even keeping the rounds and the guns in seperate places, it's all locked up, nice and safe. How the fuck is that gonna help when you wander into the kitchen and find a guy stealing shit? Are you going to politely ask him to hang around for a couple of minutes while you rummage around looking for keys and unlocking gun cabinets and safes?

Actually, there's a been a rise in home invasion burglaries in our area. Meaning, they force their way into the home, beat the crap out of the home owner and in some cases have actually killed them. The 10 that have recently taken place in our area follow this model if the homeowner answers the door. If the home owner does not answer the door, they go around back and break in. (In a couple of cases surprising people that opted to not answer their door)

You're also assuming that most break ins happen at night. They don't. They happen during the day on weekdays because most people aren't at home. However, I work from home and I'm alone. Which is precisely why we made the decision for me to get a handgun.

The safes don't use keys, they're electronic combination and it's a finger combination, not a numeric combination.

During the day, when I'm home alone....the pistol will be out of the safe, loaded with the safety on.

At night, our current weapons and ammo reside in the bedroom safe, loaded with the safety on and our bedroom door is locked. If someone breaks into the house, we'd have time to get the safe open and call 911. We have two dogs and there's no chance someone would get into the house without the dogs barking, so accidentally stumbling into a burglar is slim. In this scenario, it's not in the plan to confront the burglar if they're already in the house unless they try to come through that bedroom door.

That might be the most logical thing you have ever said on this debate.

Bullshit.  If a person is female, there is something that can be taken other than monetary value.

Well, they might say that.  I don't.

My children are grown.  If I put a gun in this house now, it will be locked and loaded.  Should an intruder come in My home, I know I could use it.

glitter -> RE: Completely off topic (4/11/2012 5:31:00 PM)

I think this is possibly the scariest thing I have ever read. The fact that if you are in your house alone, you will have a gun loaded and locked with you is incredibly hard to imagine. I don't even have a house alarm and leave my front porch door unlocked 24/7. (probably foolish). I have a doggie now, so I reckon I would be alerted to any intruders.

I am both shocked and saddened. I hope we may never see that day here. Our guards are not even armed with the exception of Special branch etc.

I hope you never need to use them. :(

That was actually him quoting me. He doesn't agree with that sentiment.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Completely off topic (4/11/2012 5:50:32 PM)

I am not a person that lives fearfully, but the idea of a home invasion scares me. A close neighbor has lifelong PTSD due to one, and TWO close relations had their homes broken into by armed invaders. One was assaulted and spent the rest of her life coping with a closed head injury.

I'm not going to sit here and tell you that their stories would have been different had they been armed, but I am NOT going to sneer at someone who is prepared to defend herself by any means necessary. There are a lot of bad guys in the United States and they DO have firearms, pepper spray, switchblades, and all sorts of fun toys that legal-minded citizens need clearance to get.

the bad guys could have tazers too.. I am not sure what a legal minded citizen would need to do to get one, i think it depends on state laws..

maybe you could but i know i couldnt.. I dont have anything that could be used very effectively as a weapon..

it appears that tasers are fairly legal to own in many states.. imo, they would work much better than pepper spray..

eta- and with a taser, its ready right now, no need to unlock your gun and then unlock your ammo and load it as someone is breaking in..

I'm the same way Hibbie. We live in a great neighborhood and I'm not afraid to walk anywhere in the dark. But, the reality is, we're a suburb of a large city which is on the border of Mexico. When the economy goes down, crime and violence goes up. Upper middle class neighborhoods are being targeted by theft rings and I don't want to be afraid to answer my door.

kitkat105 -> RE: Completely off topic (4/11/2012 6:11:07 PM)

I think it's fair and I'm incredibly happy/proud of you, OsideGirl. Coming from a "non gun country" I actually have no issue with people who are trained to use a gun correctly and are licensed. You have an excellent plan for personal safety. You never can be too careful, especially working from home alone during the day.

I know in a town just near me there had been a spate of similar break ins - either knocking at the front door and if no answer going around the back; and with 2 people, 1 distracting the homeowner at the front door while the other goes around the back.

I've never experienced a break in or home invasion but it's something I've always been scared of. I can certainly see a gun license and home security system in place in my future, when I move to the US.

The neighborhood I live in was rife with break ins when I moved here 26 years ago. Kids, looking for drug money and trashing the house when they didn't find anything saleable. It's been fine for years, but I am a lucky person to be able to say that. I have family that absolutely live in the 'hood, and if I did, I would have my own CCW.

I am a military wife.  When I am in My house alone, it is because My husband is away in serving his country.

My comments should neither shock or sadden you.  I am sorry that I have done so.

There is stupid. There is goddamned fucking stupid. Then there is the mystery of how a man manages to operate a typewriter while demonstrating such amazing stupidity. Where on the scale falls the suggestion that we have to agree to differ on whether you get to break into my house?

ETA : Gas tank explodes, causing man to dislodge props, pickup, which is grounded, pins man on top of lit stinger.

The good news is, it'll all be over in, ...well, it depends on how much gas is in the tank.

Sorry Oside girl, I just can't let this one go.

tj - that is a bunch of bunk. I'm looking around my apartment and see at least 100 things that can be used as weapons. Heck I took a class in which we learned how to use a paperback as a weapon!

And this is of course a good opportunity to list my classic favorite book. Gavin DeBecker, The Gift of Fear. Well worth whatever it costs to buy it.

yeah sure there are pillows too.. I did say I didnt have anything I would consider to be an effective weapon.. hand to hand combat, I would lose.. a scarf (dont have one) or bag would not stop someone for more than a milisecond, if that.. certainly the odds would be very much against me.. (I have been attacked before, btw)

and sure, I could throw my dirty panties at him to stun him temporarily and make a run for it.. [8|] [:D]

having a taser tho seems like a good idea, imo better than guns or pepper spray, etc.. I might just look into that..
