All second baseman Paige Sultzbach wanted to do was play in her school's state championship baseball game tonight.

But because she is a girl, that won't happen.

Sultzbach is a freshman at Mesa Preparatory Academy, which had been scheduled to play Our Lady of Sorrows Academy in tonight's Arizona Charter Athletic Association state championship at Phoenix College.

But Our Lady of Sorrows, a fundamentalist Catholic school in Phoenix that lost twice to Mesa Prep during the regular season, chose to forfeit the championship game rather than play a team fielding a female player.

Our Lady of Sorrows school officials would not comment, but Sultzbach's mother, Pamela Sultzbach, said her daughter and the rest of the team received the news after Wednesday afternoon's practice.

"This is not a contact sport, it shouldn't be an issue," Pamela said. "It wasn't that they were afraid they were going to hurt or injure her, it's that (they believe) that a girl's place is not on a field."

Paige played softball and volleyball in junior high, but because Mesa Prep does not have a girls softball team, she decided to try out for the boys baseball team, with the coach's encouragement.

From early on, Paige tried to blend in, her mother said. When the coach referred to the kids as "guys and gals," Paige spoke up and said that they all wear the same uniform, so the coach should just call them all guys.

Her teammates have stood up for her.

During Mesa Prep's two previous games with Our Lady of Sorrows, Paige didn't play out of respect for the opposing team's beliefs, but that wasn't going to be an option this time, Pamela said.

"We respected their school rule ... but she took it hard," Pamela said. "She didn't like it and neither did her teammates. They went out and played the best they could because they wanted to prove a point."

In a statement to FoxNews.com, an Our Lady of Sorrows official said the school had no choice but to forfeit because it has a strict policy prohibiting participation in co-ed athletics and believes in "forming and educating boys and girls" separately.

I, on the other hand, look forward to the day when female swimmers exceed the capabilities of male swimmers.

Status: offline 		I remember when I was coaching my son's pee-wee football team. They were eight or nine years old. My son was one helluva Linebacker. That's not just me, saying so. The head coach was very impressed.

One Saturday, Michael was on the field and he got man-handled for the first set of downs by a tackle that was almost a head taller but, much thinner. When he came off the field I gave his helmet a "coaches smack" (kind of like a Gibbs smack) and said: "What's wrong? Is your head not in the game?"

He replied: "Dad, I can't hit her. You always taught me not to hit girls. I was non-plussed. I explained that she put herself out there in those pads and was trying to act like a man so he should respect her and kick her ass like he would any man.

The rest of the game was very different.

Four years later (kids are 12 and 13) when we played the same team and the boys were weighing in at 170-200 lbs. We refused to take the field because we were afraid she was going to get crushed (she weighed about 120) and the league backed us.

I think your first call was right, they made the choice to play and so let them play. I played football in high school and last time I checked there was not a weight requirement. We had people on our JV squad who weighed in around 110-125 and there was not a person around telling them they could not play because they were not big enough.

Status: offline 		We have a female place kicker on our local HS team. On anything inside 35 yards, she's money in the bank.

The local paper asked her last year what it was like getting hit and she said that after the first time, it was no big deal. She goes about 125 soaking wet.

Her older brother had been the place kicker and when she was playing soccer in Jr Hi and she asked him to teach her. He graduated, the coach had noone who could hit an extra point for shit so he asked her to try out. I think she was second team all conference last year.

Status: offline 		There's a big difference in the level of physicality between football and baseball. If I had played baseball instead of football, I probably would not have near constant headaches and be less accident prone than I am today. That being said, as mean and evil of an SOB as I was back then, I dont think I could ever hit a woman, even if she was as big and rough as me. However, baseball is a different story alltogether. I think the school that forefitted was afraid of getting whupped again, and used the girl as an excuse.

At the major league level, Pure flat-out speed and strength.

I know there are individual women who can outrun or are stronger than an individual male but when you get to the top 0.01% of each gender, the females are behind.

Don't believe me on that? Look at 100 meter times and pound for pound weightlifting results at the olympics this summer

Swimming, on the other hand is different. Women have a very small extra layer of subcutaneous fat which makes their body more hydrodynamic than men. I don't see the day to be very far in the future when women at the world's and olympics will match and exceed the times of the men.

When I played FB in Jr Hi (12-13), we had a lot of kids at or slightly over 200. Hell, that was almost 40 years ago and kids are bigger now.

That being said what was babe ruths time in the 100?
What was fernando valenzuela's time in the 100?
What was george brett's time in the 100.
What I have noticed in mlb is the ability to hit the ball and catch the ball seem to be of paramount importance.

My statement was a continuation of the discussion between Myself and Domken concerning this statement by Ken. "I look forward to the day when women play major league baseball right besides the men. There is absolutely no reason to not allow it."

Please note the words Major league baseball in his statement.

Please try to keep up.

I do not know the the hundred meter times of the aforementioned people. Their hundred meter times are immaterial as they either made their living with their strength or the speed at which they could pitch a ball or a combination of the 2 (Ruth).

If females in the majors was likely, there would be more in college. As it is, I think there is one female player in college and she is playing at the NAIA level.

I was probably one of the first little leaguers in the country with a girl on the team back in 1971. She was a good pitcher and is still a good friend.
