Hello to all

I have just recently rejoined CM after some time away and it got me thinking about when I very first joined and the learning curve I went through. In particular a misunderstanding I had where a guy asked for my thoughts on CBT. Now my response was influenced by the fact that I was brand not even spanked new and coming from a professional background where CBT has entirely different connotations (cognitive behavioral therapy)! I think I kind of got away with my first response which was something a long the lines of it being useful to bring about change and for gaining control over responses to certain stimuli. However, I think my naivete was apparent when I said that I thought it was the NHS's latest fix all solution!

So anyway I was just wondering what kink related misunderstandings other people had, just for the giggles and to try and avoid more myself!

Thanks in anticipation of anyone willing to share x

I had the impression the difference between Housework and No Strings Housework was that one was just house work. As in, sure, I do housework, but it's just chores. Nothing more to it.

Turns out, that ain't it at all.

Whoops.

Anyway, the dishes are done and so what?

For me, what mostly confuses me is all the english words... things like "total", "obey", "dominate". I'm an engineer caught in a poet's world. I deal in literals and precision. The preponderance here deal in fantasy, hyperbole, and deliberate ambiguity to preserve the fantasy. So when I read something like, "I need a disciplinarian to help me with procrastination issues" I foolishly think they are looking for a kinky life coach not a scene using procrastination as an excuse. When I read, "I trust my master completely" I think they trust their master completely not "I think he's an OK guy within limits". The list is endless.

Ask me if Carol is my "TPE" slave and I'll give you a Heinlein-esque answer... "She has not disobeyed so far. It is total to-date."

I also think my comp sci background doesn't help any. As a programmer you always deal in boundary conditions. So when someone says something like, "I can't leave" my head automatically goes to extreme examples... what if your master <insert horrific thing here>?

I have to work really hard to make the interpretations when I speak with most BDSM people.

To JeffBC

Just an aside, but I always found that programmers were perfectly able to blur boundary conditions when it suited them.

However, in principle, I agree. "Total". "OK, give me your credit card details". Gone. Not total then...

And... no strings housework - isn't that just naked vacuuming? (no apron....)

Oh... and "ageplay" still does my head in in definition terms.

CBT is computer based training. Corporate's have CBT for everything. If someone fails to follow process correctly, the HR girls will schedule them for refresher CBT so they don't make that mistake again. I still giggle at that.

Back in my newbie days, I met a girl who had shared similar kinky interests and also unkinky like theatre and watersports. You know watersports? Watersking, boating, scuba etc? Not quite

Ha ha great :-) and I love the realisation when enlightened the pause and embarrassed "ohhh".

Apparently not, maybe we could offer this version of CBT and look at the results :-P

Wow I hadn't thought of that, I had always thought of myself as being quite straight spoken, but I guess it just goes to show our definition or reach pof certain words can be markedly different.

Zzazoom's Hobby. SFW. Although why are you here if you're worried about SFW...?

I didn't know what mirror play was. Apparently it has to do with online roleplaying and each participant doing those actions to themselves as best as possible. I thought it was jilling off with a mirror. For a short while I thought HWP was "Hung White Penis" kind of like BBC... Apparently that is "Height-Weight Proportional." On that note British television has never been the same...

Oh yeah a friend once told me a guy had asked her if she was into hardsports, her innocent reply of "you mean like rugby or ones with complicated rules?" Still gets me.

Sorry think I'm missing the point. Not an unusual occurrence :-) the above enlightenment comment was aimed at myself and my realisation.Wouldn't class myself as remotely expert in anything. Just here to chat and learn x

Wow I wouldn't have had a clue about that either.

I had a kind of opposite confusion. I'm used to FTM meaning 'female to male (trans person). I recently had a kid and started frequenting parenting sites and was very confused reading a thread in which someone asked for 'breastfeeding advice for a ftm'. I thought, wow, that's a complicated scenario, I doubt many people will be able to give much useful advice.

I still have to read it and remind myself 'first time mom'...

Bambi - it took me ages to work out what HWP means as well, it doesn't help that it often comes in the same sentence as the length of a man's penis.

Typo in a gay-male magazine classified ad, y'know... I'm into ... write me at PO box 1234.
Yes, Lance IS that ancient.

Anyhow, the typo was "You must be into OJ."  WTF?  Into citrus juice?  Off course, the typo is into Jerk-Off.

Never did figure out "I'm looking for men into BB."  Well, I did figure it out, but not until years later.... BB = Body building.

Just recently here on CM.... "I'm into GOM."  I almost passed by, saying "GOM is Gay Oriental May and I'm not.  Good luck on your search."  Young man corrected his listing for "Glove over mouth."  Is that a TOS violation?

Yes, I got caught out with that one. Thought it was to do with exercise and listed it on a profile. Then somebody told me what it really meant!

What IS exactly the difference between just "housework" and "no strings housework"? I've never really understood that one.

Yikes that would have been complicated! And an even more complicated explanation if you had said something before realising lol.

Ha ha what a weird fetish to have to be into citrus! I never knew so many acronyms, I hate to think of the mess I'd get myself into if I had to complete one off those!

Guess which person turned up to their first munch with £30 of pre-packed sandwiches, snacks and nibbles?
