To be poor, you must submit three years of tax returns, photo ID, and a notarized letter certifying you are "legitimately poor."

Oh, and be of the "right" faith.

They'll still be collecting the food, just not distributing it. My guess is that the homeless folks made the regular parishioners uncomfortable, so they outsourced the distribution.

Wow! I so don't want to seem like I'm defending this church but, what is wrong with any organization "helping their own"? It's charity. No one has a right to it. They're not entitled to it. Of course, there are plenty of people that have legitimate need. That's another discussion.

I don't think asking people to sit through a sermon to get enough food to last ... what ... a week? ... is such a horrible fate and I don't see where people get the idea that anyone that shows up with a hand out is entitled to anything.

They're only going to give the food to their members? Is that one of the suggestions, here? What's wrong with that? I can't go to Work Out World and demand use of their exercise machines unless I'm a member of their organization. Well, I can demand all I want but it won't do me much good.

Maybe, even churches/charities are feeling a crunch in these economic times. I am quite sure that even people lucky enough to still have a roof over their head and a car to drive have been forced to greatly reduce their charitable donations.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

or just distributing the food to "their" poor people (meaning regular church attending ones)..

see.. homeless people "have not yet come to a sense of personal responsibility in life. They are still in denial, blame or seeing the world as owing them".. (translation: they are not entitled to the freebies cuz they have not joined their Church & fed their "spiritual hunger")..

is that really the reason someone should sit thru a sermon? shouldnt people attend religious services cuz they actually believe? [8|]

Musicmystery -> RE: Church closes food program because it attracts the poor (8/26/2012 11:38:58 AM)

When they get their act together, then they can get help, right?

There's an unbelievable disconnect.

tj444 -> RE: Church closes food program because it attracts the poor (8/26/2012 11:51:40 AM)

and of course someone that is homeless and doesnt have any income/money isnt gonna be able to tithe money back to the church.. [8|]

It is not surprising how some would try to use this as an indictment of all churches everywhere

So much for the churches and communities taking care of the poor.

Yet that has been the battle cry for a few years now...

Let them seek help from the churches, charities and local communities.

Charities are over extended

Local communities are going broke

And now churches are closing their aid

Next solution?

Nothing in what Muse posted makes the connection from "some," to "all," Tj.  Nothing there says the food baskets they collect will be reserved for church members.  They just aren't going to do it from an open door anymore.

For a segment of our poor population (not all, by any stretch), demanding charity (especially the government variety) is a way of life.  The rude fuckers and trash seem to have screwed it up for everybody, yet again.

Where does the article say that?

Find us a text version, instead of a scan, and I'll highlight the passage that created that impression for me, Muse.

it is a church that gives food to its "regulars".. so from that i think they mean poor people that belong to the church and attend regularly... as opposed to non-believer non-belonging interlopers that come in for freebies after the church service? I guess if ya want the freebies then ya gotta pay the religous freight, huh? See, thats why I dislike organized religion, its like that movie "The Body Snatchers".. ya gotta be one of "them"...

yeh the us citizen argument :)

I knew this sounded familiar.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Church closes food program because it attracts the poor (8/26/2012 1:04:20 PM)

I'd like to know the motivation behind this.

Did they close it because a few of their wealthy supporters didn't feel 'comfortable' around poor people? (this reminds me of the interracial couple foofraw)

Did they close it because someone on the city council got pissed?

There isn't a lot of info to make a decision. It appears that the church initially wanted to be Christian (acting like they feel Christ would). and someone had different ideas.
