Oh, it's amazing how far you can get by with a few grunts, and gestures ;-)

Capping or not capping of names has existed for less than 20 years and is an invention of the "modern era".

It's a rare day that we disagree on something, but to the above, I have to say "so what"?

I'm a leather person. Not a dang one of those protocols existed before the 1950's for any civilian organization. Some didn't have a basis for a prior organization at all. They aren't hundreds of years old, either, but there are absolutely leather folks out there who implement them as they see fit. The same comparisons for them could be made to some of the very disparages on this thread. Yet, you don't often hear people complain about how it's pretentious for a slave to sit at her owner's feet or that an owner can implement any other habit that expresses the dynamic.

LP, that was just a direct response to the "is always attacked in the modern era" comment. It's a product of the modern era, so I found it funny to claim that modern era is attacking it.

I know, Oside, but I have to kind of wonder if it's the same thing.

There are certainly a number of folks who think leather protocols are pretentious as well. I'd say there is a segment of kinky folks who see rituals as silly or done for the D to feel self important. Maybe it's just a smaller version of a similar pretext.

Specifically addressing the expectations that a Dominant will have their name capitilized and a submissive is lower case: IMO, it's something that only takes place in cyber space. It has no impact on real life interactions.

Oside-
You are of course correct that capping within the context of BDSM is a product of themodern era, and the Internet especially.

I should have clarified that etiquette- its rules and mores- was one of the targets of the modern era after WWII. Not without some justifiation I might add.
On balance, however I would maintain that codified rules of social behavior are a positive thing.

I'm late to this conversation, and I don't feel like reading all of the replies, so forgive me if I repeat something that's already been said.

Despite self-identifying as a "sub", I don't agree with those subs/slaves who ALWAYS refer to themselves using lower case letters.

To me, using upper and lower case letter is a sign of respect, or a way of openly declaring a D/s relationship. So when i am having an on-line discussion with someone to whom I am submissive, then I will use the lower case for myself, and I will capitalize their name or pronouns referring to them. As I said, I view that as an open declaration of my submissive stance towards that person.

But outside of those times when I'm engaged in a conversation with my Domme, I actually strongly dislike "slashy speak". Frankly, it can be quite annoying. Reading words like "W/we" and "O/our" makes me want to pluck my eyes out and throw my computer into the ocean.

I'm new to the online BDSM community and I have noticed that some Doms/Dommes tend to capitalize pronouns that reference themselves--me, my, mine and so forth...

To me, this just seems to be a power trip. But, is this actually something that is acceptable in the community? And if so, why? It just seems so egocentric to me.

Thanks for taking the time to read!

I cap out of respect. I always cap Sir and Master when texting or emailing my Master, both out of respect and because I know he probably wants it that way (though he never said so). However, when I'm driving and he texts me, I can't type back so I use Siri on my iPhone and verbally text him. Siri apparently doesn't GAS to show the same respect to him that I do, lol.

It doesn't bother me when Dominants cap their names, but I barely notice it. I even find it a little bit sexy when a submissive deliberately leaves the caps off when referring to herself.

The slashes drive me bat-shit crazy. Seriously: try pronouncing one of those slashy-speak sentences sometime.

"He/she/it walked to the store to buy me/Me a bottle of milk for our/Our dog/Dog."

It'll drive you round the bend.
