Yeah, I was warned that on the site I'd found the info about yogurt on, so I always make sure it says that it's plain and read the ingredients to make sure it *only* says those 2 ingredients (milk, bacteria).

Thanks for the tip about the pills, I think I'll be getting those tomorrow...I was never overly fond of this messy tampon trick. It was just the lesser of 2 evils lol

There is also a prescription drug called Diflucan that is a one time pill that many doctors will prescribe if you are on antibiotics (which often seems to lead to yeast infections) if you ask them for it when the antibiotics are prescribed. It works quite well.

Well most of its already been said in one way or another, but as I work professionally in this sort of area, I thought I'd toss in my 50 cents, and offer some other info that might be of use/interest to others......

If you have no prior history of recurrent YI, then yes, it was more than likely due to the antibiotics. Fluconazole (Diflucan) is only about 70% effective in curing vaginal YI's (as I recall - could be wrong) based on the current protocol of a single dose. Most other Candida species infections require longing dosing.

If you want to try taking a probiotic, then head off to a good health food store, and choose one from the refridgerated section (I always take mine to the lab and promptly culture the pill to make sure it contains viable organisms of the right type :) Have not had a problem with refridgerated organisms yet, but the regular freeze dried ones on the room temp shelf are questionable. A hefty shot of yogurt containing "live culture" will do the same thing - Lactobacillus acidophilus is the usual beneficial organism used in culture, but you might also see ones with Bifidobacterium sp as well - they're fine too.

Keep the genital area clean and dry - when women started wearing underwear on a regular basis in the mid 1800's we set ourselves up for this problem by hampering air flow round the area. DO NOT DOUCHE. You'll likely just cause more trouble. Avoid talcum powder (an irritant) - use cornstarch powder instead if you want something (especially if you are shaving the area etc).

Finally, if you have a YI tell your partner. Men can be asymptomatic and simply give it right back to you without realising it - if you've had recent sexual contact with them then they might want to have a chat with their doc to get a topical cream, JIC.

The OTC cream/ovule treatments generally work great as well (just a bit messy). IF, however, you keep getting them, then you may have picked up a resistant strain and you'll have to take an oral antifungal.

There are other reasons, most of them clearly stated on the product inserts..... diabetes, immune deficiency etc.

Finger's crossed this was just a one off to you..... if you were taking something like Ampicillin then you could try telling your doc if he/she wants to put you on it again in the future that you got a YI - they might try something else that's not so unkind to your normal bacterial flora. Better yet, just avoid the antibiotics altogether if at all possible.

I had a pap smear recently - the results were clear for malignancy but there are Candida organisms present high up in my vagina. I have no symptoms of yeast infection

I had one a few months ago and took the Diflucan pill, with good results. However I've been told to get the 7 day pessary/cream stuff this time......yuk

I am surprised to see that no one has mentioned AZO Yeast. A product that should be available at any walgreens or osco.It's Homeopathic medicine that I have been taking for two months now. That work great for me.

now would acidoph pills help w/ith the yeast infections overweight people can get in the under the folds of fat s/kin? I get horrible yeast infections in my flabby area's such as under breasts under armpits and under the belly flap and in all joiints.

Unfortunately no - the pills generally only support the gastrointestinal tract (there is good evidence that a probiotic can help with recovering gut flora after using antibiotics, as well as helping folks with irritable bowel syndrome etc), with collateral effect on the vagina. Your biggest challenge is to overcome those conditions that yeast thrive in - warm and moist, in the skin folds. I'd recomend consulting a dermatologist - there may be a topical cream that you could use on an ongoing basis (perhaps Nizoral). Otherwise, wear loose, breathable (cotton) clothing which is washed frequently in hot water/detergent, wash and rinse those trouble spots regularly with a mild soap, dry thoroughly and use cornstarch powder (just a little!).

As in all cases, for medical/health advice, its best to consult with your medical practitioner - 'cause they're the only ones authorized to give said advice.

i have to go with the comment on Cranberry Juice, whenever I am on antibiotics I always drink it to stave off infection - works for me.

No offense, but i think the best advice is to go see a doctor and get an educated treatment.... There are free clinics everywhere if you do not have money...

I have seen the doctore:) Many times lol not all for the sores, sometimes for a pap and then they noticed sores,

The creams the doctor gave me made the sores even worse now not only were they slimey from traped heat they were gooey from the cream treatments.

There is nystop powder but it's only effective for a little bit of time.

The thing is with hot moist sticky area's is that keeping it powdered only works untill one gets hot. I can powder my vaginal area by the legs 40 times a day and in the case of the under stomach fat flap in 5 mins it's moist again.

But yes special tlc to the area's does help.

carol, yes, that's it bacterial. They all say just to keep it clean and dry and that's dam near impossible in the summer months because I sweat like mad and I can bathe and in 5 mins be soggy again.

Put paper towels in between the skin that touches maybe?

It's never been an infection issue for me, so I have no experience, but I know when I'm training/working out or just during the really hot weather I put a folded paper towel between the underwire part of my bra and my breasts so the sweat combined with the bouncing/movement doesn't get my skin irritated...it's also nice to not feel the wetness of the sweat and helps when you're at the gyn so you don't get those sweat marks on your chest that look like a construction worker's armpits lol

May not work for all areas of the body, but give it a try, you can change them often too, should keep you dry a while

I've done that before! That's a really good idea, just becarefull when ya remove them because sometimes it feels as if they had adhered to your skin hehehe.

So it didn't really help? Or did they just not stay in place?

It's easy witht he under the bra one because you have the elastic on the pra holding it right against your skin and it can go anywhere...I can't really think of how to make it stay in places that don't have something to hold them in place...I'll think on it some more and see if I can conjure anything moderately useful

It did not really help no because the paper towl would get so squished up it was very narrow. Or like with the pantie line area in the legs they didn't stay hahaha.

You know those tensor bandages? The tan colored ones with the elastic in them, they out them on sprained ankles and stuff...could you use that on top of the paper towel to keep it in place? That stuff is a breathable fabric, the ones I've used anyways, and it has that elasticity to hold the paper towel where you put it...not sure it would work, but it's the best idea I had
