I'd say the author is pointing out that people on such public assistance are not entitled to top shelf living.

Don't you think?

He's going a bit further than just saying that, so not really, no.
And frankly, people are entitled to spend their money on whatever the hell they want to, however it was attained: can you imagine the shitfit you'd be throwing if some mouthy liberal had suggested that people shouldn't be allowed to buy booze if they own a gun? Given your own aversion to nanny stating, the hypocrisy in your OP is breathtaking.

Yes there is a connection but such does not make outsourcing part of the topic, now does it.

When you're proposing fantasy solutions that you've apparently gleaned from a bad '80s SF film to the problem of unemployment, the actual source of the problem is worth discussing.

You'll not find that in the OP. So, no, I do not think it worth discussing here. There are threads where it is though. Feel free to visit them.

So in the absence of jobs, you feel the correct approach to the unemployed is to abuse them. Right.

It's not their money, it's the taxpayers. The rest is pure noise.

No, as soon as it's given to them by the Feds who took it from the taxpayer, then it's their money. Sorry, but that's how it works.

And what of those of retirement age? they would technically be without a job? does that mean then that everything they worked for is taken from them?

or are they to continue working until they drop dead? If they do that, then how do the people at the start of their work career get jobs? or do these jobs suddenly appear as required by the number of people seeking?

What of those who are disabled rendering them incapable of work?

What about people who find themselves out of work due to their place of work going out of business? Should they lose all they have worked for due to something that is no fault of their own?

Where are all the jobs coming from?

This quoted OP is an awefull lot like Communism.. a damn good idea in theory, but in a practical sense it'll never work. ( and therefore have all of it's possessions take and sold by the state.

No! Part of the deal is on what and how it is spent. No different than if I give you money for X, you are not to use it for Y. If you do, your cut off.

OFF TOPIC!

Please stop trying to derail. Unemployment is not the fucking topic.

If unemployment isn't the topic, then there is no topic given the content of your OP:
quote:

Put me in charge of food stamps. I’d get rid of Lone Star cards; no cash for Ding Dongs or Ho Ho’s, just money for 50-pound bags of rice and beans, blocks of cheese and all the powdered milk you can haul away. If you want steak and frozen pizza, then get a job.

Put me in charge of Medicaid. The first thing I’d do is to get women Norplant birth control implants or tubal ligations. Then, we’ll test recipients for drugs, alcohol, and nicotine. If you want to reproduce or use drugs, alcohol, or smoke, then get a job.

Put me in charge of government housing. Ever live in a military barracks? You will maintain our property in a clean and good state of repair. Your home” will be subject to inspections anytime and possessions will be inventoried. If you want a plasma TV or Xbox 360, then get a job and your own place.

In addition, you will either present a check stub from a job each week or you will report to a “government” job. It may be cleaning the roadways of trash, painting and repairing public housing, whatever we find for you. We will sell your 22 inch rims and low profile tires and your blasting stereo and speakers and put that money toward the “common good..”

Before you write that I’ve violated someone’s rights, realize that all of the above is voluntary. If you want our money, accept our rules. Before you say that this would be “demeaning” and ruin their “self esteem,” consider that it wasn’t that long ago that taking someone else’s money for doing absolutely nothing was demeaning and lowered self esteem.

If we are expected to pay for other people’s mistakes we should at least attempt to make them learn from their bad choices. The current system rewards them for continuing to make bad choices.

AND While you are on Gov’t subsistence, you no longer can VOTE! Yes, that is correct. For you to vote would be a conflict of interest. You will voluntarily remove yourself from voting while you are receiving a Gov’t welfare check. If you want to vote, then get a job.

If the cretin you've swiped your thesis from had any suggestions how somebody with no skills can go about getting a job, then he might have a leg to stand on with the rest of the crap he's spouting. Sadly, he has neither.

IMO, the only time one would be required to divest of all luxuries would be where one is receiving 100% government subsistence. Government subsistence is not meant, nor should it be, comfortable. When one gets comfortable with taxpayer largess, what incentive is there to get off it?

SNAP, no. But SNAP would not buy you steak.

Should they lose all they have worked for due to something that is no fault of their own?

Can you really make life fair?

I know a few people who have lost everything and come back to reacquire it all again. One guy has done it twice.

Yes! It's there to keep people alive and housed. If they want a house full of drugs whores and hire purchase electronics that they can't afford, then that's their business, not yours.
Let's be honest here: you resent there being any welfare spending at all, and would rather see these people begging in the street. All of this drivel is just an attempt to justify that attitude.

Sure is my business when it's taxpayer money. You'd use my X for Y. Now, go starve.

How are they going to find a job as your cite in the OP shrilly insists, when there are no fucking jobs to be had? Are you seriously suggesting that has no bearing on the permanent underclass stuck on government assistance for a lifetime?

No, I think your response is quite in line with how a progressive deals with the topic.

Sorry Yachtie, but I'm neither a communist nor a right wing fascist, so this ain't flying with me.

What is it about a social safety net that you don't understand (because it is clear, in fact, very, very clear, that you don't understand what it is).

And if you despise living in a liberal democracy that has a safety social net, there are many places on the globe that function EXACTLY as you describe. Why don't you consider moving there if you hate it here so much?

Ok then OP.. seeing how none of us mere plebs posses your obviously superior intellect...

WTF IS THE TOPIC THEN??

The post reads as thought it centers around jobs, unemployment and welfare but any of us mere peons who have dared to mention it have been shouted down.

(I really should stop feeding the troll shouldn't I?)

It centers around welfare, and the essence of it is that government should not be there to provide comfort. Government assistance is not there to provide equality in living standards.

Thus, no steak. No fancy rims. No mega stereo. No ability to vote for people who would increase your subsistence as an incentive to vote for them. No adding children to the taxpayers dime, further burdening them more. There would be incentive to not destroy that which is being provided, such as one's living accommodation.

Welfare is not a right. It's a voluntary contract with the taxpayers, and the recipient is not the one to tell the taxpayers what they shall provide.

edit: I have no problem with, say, SNAP. But for crying out loud, lets not use it for luxuries like steak or frozen premade convenience foods.

I'll address the reasons as I have in threads where they are the topic. Those reasons are not the topic here.

It has bearing where such is the topic, but its not.

Look, numb nuts, if the topic gets expanded to unemployment and job availability it necessarily leads to off-shoring which leads to discussing corporations. None of that is on topic.

Want to talk about all that unwieldy stuff? make a thread.

You'll find that welfare dependency doesn't exist in a vacuum. If you're not willing to address the reasons for it, then it's small wonder that your alleged "solution" to the problem it poses is bullshit.
How are they going to find a job and get off welfare if there are no fucking jobs to be had? Are you cool with them taking your taxes?

Yes, you have to wonder about someone who offers a solution that repeats the mantra "then get a job" no fewer than FOUR times, and then goes on to deny that unemployment has anything to do with the thread.

"Employment". "Unemployment".

Just two sides of the same coin really.

Please Yachtie explain to me how "unemployment" has nothing to do with "employment" just one more time. I could really use a good laugh today....
