Post your favorite euphemism(s), cliches, metaphors or similes.

I'll begin...

One slate off and one sliding.

In high school, I took AP European History. The teacher always used a certain expression when people made decisions after a period of imbibing..."joy juice."

I don't know why, but it always made me laugh.

Kaliko -> RE: Euphemisms (1/20/2013 6:37:00 AM)

I don't know if this is a euphemism, but it's something my grandfather always used to say.

"I see, said the blind man, as he picked up his hammer and saw."

(Papa is probably rolling over in his grave right now that I just honored his memory on a BDSM website.)

As much use as a chocolate fire guard
As much use as an ashtray on a motorbike

Or my mate's favourite on the same subject
As much use as tits on a fish

my grandma used that, but differently "i see, said the blind man to his deaf daughter who wasn't listening anyway"

i like; you haven't lost all your marbles, but there's certainly a hole in the bag.

don't always look for the icing on the cake. sometimes it's just cheap, sweet, sickly crap that you end up throwing away.

My favorite aphorisms have always been, "a bird in hand is worth two in the bush" and "a stitch in time saves nine". It's amazing that most people never stop to think what those two phrases actually mean.

A euphemism is choosing "softer" words to convey something that might otherwise sound harsh or judgmental. For example, instead of saying, "He's unemployed", you might say instead, "He's between jobs". This is often confused with political correctness.

Being politically correct includes (but is not limited to) the idea that one has scrubbed from their language any assumptions based on race, religion, gender, etc. For example, using mail carrier instead of mail man.

An idiom is a collection of words that come to have meaning through use; i.e. "raining cats and dogs".

What are funny are those sayings that contradict each other:

The early bird gets the worm VS Good things come to those who wait.

Too many cooks spoil the broth VS Many hands make light work.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder VS Out of sight, out of mind.

"Dont stick your dick in crazy."

Those words of wisdom were spoken by an upperclassman who shall remain anynymous to yours truly when I hit U miami in 78 and was feeling like a kid in a sexual candy store.

That's as useless at tits on a boar.

myotherself -> RE: Euphemisms (1/20/2013 9:20:51 AM)

That's about as welcome as a fart in a space suit

My overly legalized brain first read this as "a switch in time that saved nine." That, of course, is a reference to the Supreme Court and the time that justices switched their votes to begin upholding FDR's New Deal legislation after FDR threatened his court-packing plan. SCOTUS switched, FDR was happy, and we stayed with 9 justices.

My own coinage: As much use as a lace condom

The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

LOL... exactly!

There's a few places online where you can find contradictory aphorisms, and it's amazing how many there are. The one I like the most is:

The ends don't justify the means VS All's well that ends well.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Euphemisms (1/20/2013 12:07:41 PM)

I caught crap for having this on a sign in my lab way back when.

"Doing a good job around here is like pissing in your wetsuit. You get a nice warm feeling all over but noone else notices"

littlewonder -> RE: Euphemisms (1/20/2013 12:19:37 PM)

I like "thinning out the herd" better. [:D]
