Wishing you a refreshing sleep, DC, and that you get to awaken to joyous music (and not an annoying earworm).

Latest update (and apologies for unanswered cmails!)

My nephew wanted something, but I can’t remember what. A cookie, perhaps, or a popsicle. Or maybe permission to fire up a video game. This was years ago at a family gathering, when he was still shorter than I am. He went to his mom, who said no. Ditto for his dad, my brother. No fool, my nephew then found an easier mark—my mother, his Nana.

Unfortunately for the poor kid, my brother was still in earshot. Nephew had barely gotten out “Nana, may I please…” when his dad stepped in. “That’s enough.” he said. “No more answer shopping.”

That arresting verb caught my ear and lodged in my writerly memory. I don’t know if it was my brother's coinage or not, but I love it. And I realized this past weekend that it’s an awfully apt description of what I’ve spent much of 2013 doing.

The answer I want, of course, is that some superstar surgeon can carve MiMA out of my rectum without destroying my plumbing and leaving me sporting a colostomy bag for the rest of my life. Alas, that answer seems increasingly elusive. Washington Hospital Center gave me maybe a 30 percent chance of escaping a permanent colostomy. A surgeon at Georgetown was even more pessimistic, saying that a colostomy was virtually certain if he operated.

Nephew-like, I took my show on the road, conferring with a sawbones at Sloan-Kettering. He initially seemed to offer a choice between a colostomy and a lower anterior resection (LAR), a procedure in which the colon is attached directly to the anus. That’s not a perfect solution, since my rectum-less bowels would need to move often and urgently, with the risk of some measure of lifelong incontinence.

At last Friday’s follow-up visit, however, the doctor strongly advised a colostomy. (I didn’t think, unfortunately, to ask what had changed his mind.) He could possibly, he said, attempt an LAR, but MiMA’s location greatly reduces the likelihood of success. I could wind up needing a diaper for my remaining years. As you can imagine, that’s not an appealing prospect.

So now I come to a hard choice. Do I bow to what appears to be inevitable, given that I have three sources—Ben Bradlee's famous standard for Watergate coverage—saying a colostomy is the most likely option? Or do I keep answer shopping, perhaps tracking down the Pennsylvania sawbones (whose name I’ve forgotten) my oncologist mentioned? Do I check out Johns Hopkins or even Mayo? I don’t know.

Meantime, I’ll resume chemo on August 23rd, the first of four fortnightly rounds. Then some weeks to rest, followed by surgery in early to mid-November. Your thoughts and prayers and kind words continue to sustain my on this rugged journey, so please keep them coming.

You are never far from my thoughts these days DC. I just wish there was more I could do to help. I'm happy to send whatever thoughts and prayers I can, and hope that they give you the strength you need.

As for answer shopping, that is a choice that only you can make. It doesn't hurt to keep asking, if you have the time to do so. But, with three answers all the same, I wouldn't delay any actions in the hope that the next answer will be different. So, if you want my advice, keep with the schedule you have (chemo, rest, surgery), but if the oportunity presents itself to get another opinion, and it doesn't impede your current progress, go for it.

peace to you and your family.

Sugarpuss, were I you, I would answershop till the cows came home, providing your energy sustains. You never know when you might hit that one-in-a-milion that has an answer differing from that of the pack.

Is there anyway you can get assistance from a local newspaper in terms of getting an article done on you, with the answershopping inquiry in it? Perhaps a church might be willing to assist in your quest, by helping you do some extra research. Maybe write Oprah, or someone like that.

Oh, I hate that I cannot help you more.

By the way, that was a precious story about your nephew. Clever bugger...follow his lead.

Baby M, my niece, does the answer shopping whenever she can..if Mommy and Daddy won't do it, surely Grandma or Aunt Sissy will...

Great Aunt G is getting ready for her 2nd round of chemo. The first one knock her for a loop and she had to stay in the hospital for 4 months.

as always DC you have my thoughts and well wishes. if I were in your situation i'm sure i'd be answer shopping too (I love that btw). I think though that there will come a point where you have no choice but to make a decision about what to do. once you have done that I think you will feel better, even if it is going for the possibility of a CB. at least then you'll have a plan that you can go forward with.

i hope you do fine someone that can give you a better answer though should you keep looking.

DC, if you need to go answer shopping (I love that term and will now be forever using it) to feel comfortable with your choice, I say go for it. It is entirely possible the answer will not change. But, given the choice you need to make, you should be (at least somewhat) confident in your decision.

Still sending my good wishes your way!

I have a question for you DC, is this really the question you are trying to answer? Or is it a version of "when i have a colostomy, how will my life change and how will I handle those changes?"

Prayers to you

At the moment, I'm still fixated on "Is there anyway to avoid the colostomy?" Soon, though, I need to shift to the good question you posed.

Latest update (Friday, 8.23.13)

Exuberance is not my usual state of being on chemo weekends, but I’m soaring right now.

That’s a minor miracle, for today’s session backed a bit of a wallop. My kind of chemo usually makes folks sensitive to cold, but I departed feeling oddly hot, a sensation that grew over lunch at the local diner. Walking home, it felt like my bowels were about to move of their own accord, which is stressful and dispiriting. (Mercifully, they didn’t). My stomach was particularly tetchy. And, as usual, I lacked the ability to nap. Classic ingredients for a self-pity salad.

There are remedies for most of these travails, but they’re slow and not as sure as one would like. But tonight, that doesn’t matter. That’s because I checked my email after a lie-down and found electrifying news: Mei Xiang, the National Zoo’s female giant panda, appeared to be giving birth. Her water had broken, and she was having contractions. In a very 21st-century way, I followed the news via Facebook, refreshing maniacally to get the latest crumb of news.

The glad tidings came at 5:32 p.m. ET. The Zoo announced the arrival of Butterstick II—a pinkish, rat-looking cub weighing about as much as a Land O’Lakes bar. At first, I was amusedly annoyed that Mei Xiang had saved her big moment for the one day all week I was out. But then I realized she’d delivered (sans IV, no less) the best antidote on Earth for the chemo blues. I’m amazed at how joyous I still am, and judging from the coverage, I’m not alone. Perhaps, against the backdrop of the rest of the headlines, we all could use a bit of Butterstick bliss.

Of course, a newborn panda is tiny and fragile. We learned that the hard way last fall. So I’m keeping my digits crossed and prayers arising that this year’s cub survives and thrives. Meantime, I’m endlessly grateful to it for drawing me out of woe into wonder. (I know: I need to work on this alliteration addiction.)

May this maternal magic (there we go again!) bless you with joy in and hope for our wonderful, wild world.

I've been a bit absent from the boards these days, but when I do get the chance I always check for updates on you, dc.

It may be a bit late but I think you should definitely check the sawbones your oncologist mentioned and the Mayo clinic. Make a list of those questions you forgot to ask and bring it with you. With 3 concurring opinions, you know it iisnt likely someone else is going to say different but with such a life altering proposition, it is best to be sure.

My prayers and thoughts are with you always.

"You look great!" Folks have been saying that a fair bit lately. It's taken a while to realize they mean "You're surprisingly unravaged by chemo" and not "Wow! They should put you on the cover of GQ!"

Friends ---

I've been remiss in posting updates, for which I apologize.

I leave this morning (Sunday, 10/13) for Philly, where a surgeon will operate tomorrow morning and evict la MiMA. I'm both glad it's finally happening and nervous about what recovery will be like. I'll emerge from surgery with a temporary (I hope) colostomy that will handle waste disposal while the normal exit route heals from being sliced and diced. In three months or so, the colostomy should be reversed, and then I'll relearn the fine art of potty training. My folks and two of my siblings will be with me for this great adventure.

I'll probably be a bit out of it tomorrow but will return with news as soon as I can. Meantime, I'm endlessly grateful for all your kind support during this surreal journey.

Many thanks,

DC
