Yes. But it is clinically proven, supposedly, not to raise a diabetics bs.

Yes, a class would be helpful (your doctor can refer you to a local clinic/hospital where they probably have classes every week), but the American Diabetes Association website has a lot of information you can access on your own.

Note the "Recipes", "Planning Meals", "MyFoodAdvisor" (free) sections on the left of that page.

Op PLEASE READ THIS ONE !!!!!!!!!

I think you need a night time insulin my sister takes Lantus!
This helps her sugar levels stay normal during the day and night!

she must take this so that it will be okay during the day She has forgotten to take the lantus at night
and her sugar crushed to 59, she had to take a glass of water with sugar to rise it up!

Ask your diabetic doctor and I hope you have one, it is most important to have a Dr. who is a special doctor in this field of medicine!

She is lucky and so blessed to have one who works with her and keeps her sugar level normal!

Write down when and how much your sugar level are for at least two weeks, you will find out which one or thing is rising you sugar and or lower
it so much!

best regards

Mons ( The insulin she takes to keep her sugar level down and normal is called Lantus ) good luck

@ mons -

That advice is highly dangerous!!
You shouldn't advise anyone to take an insulin-based medication without them checking with their own doctor or specialist first.
A bad rush of insulin could possibly put them into a coma.

You would only need a night-time insulin supplement at night if you are a type-1 diabetic and that would be under strict instruction from a doctor. You wouldn't need it if you are a type-2 which I believe TFB is.

ETA: Who resurected this thread after it has been sat idle for a month already??

seriously I feel like I am on a boat that is being tipped from side to side an like I could face plant at any moment or pass out . i feel "drunk with out all the fun"

i had dinner an 35 minutes later I started feeling not so good, tested an it was 244.

I'm going through this with a diabetic friend...in their home they have a HUUUUUGE box of fruit, the top of the fridge has 8 boxes of sugary breakfast cereals, the freezer has icecream and fudgesicles, the fridge has ...I'm not kidding--a large bottle of every type of juice available in the grocery store, and the cupboards are full of cookies and crackers and pasta. ARRRGH!

When I found out she is diabetic was during a spell she was having similar to yours, and she had a bad headache so was planning to go take a nap! I had her check her BG while on the phone with Me, and it was 435!!! I refused to allow her to nap, worrying about her dropping into a coma, and I wanted to take her to the emergency room, but she refused (I still wish I'd called an ambulance so the doc could have seen her to yell at her). She managed to lower it down to 200 within a couple hours with an additional insulin shot. Anyway, I've been drilling at her for several months to WATCH WHAT GOES IN HER MOUTH...and lately her BG has been down around 120-140 (and she's been losing weight at a nice pace, an added benefit)...but occasionally her BG will shoot up to 240+ because she'll have a bowl of sugary cereal and then go for a tall glass of OJ. [sm=ofcourse.gif]
If she can't get a handle on her eating habits, SHE'S GOING TO GO BLIND and HER FEET WILL BE AMPUTATED, I see it all the time with people around here...and it's all so PREVENTABLE!!!!

People REALLY need to READ LABELS...all it takes is a glance at the nutritional chart...look at the sugar carbs....most foods Americans consume are in the nature of 20+ carbs PER SERVING!!!!!! (multiply that by 3 meals PLUS SNACKS!) That's sugar you aren't going to burn unless you are a distance runner or sports athlete. Those of us who have experienced low-carb eating can testify that you DON'T need all those carbs. I can fly around hyper and moving heavy objects all day with less than 20g's carbs getting My carbs from leafy vegetables and burning fat for energy instead (which gives a longer lasting energy). No more headaches, no more low energy or shaky feeling. [sm=hyper.gif]

I just saw this, and wanted to throw some stuff out there. I agree, that it is best if you are diabetic to look at what the American Diabetes society and such have to say because it is really important to eat the right foods at the right time. For example, as the OP said they did, not eating for long periods then eating is deadly, it taxes the system already having trouble handling sugars and carbs, it is better to eat a lot of little meals, especially having breakfast.

The other big problems are assumptions of what is good for diabetics. I have known diabetics, for example, who assumed stuff flavored with anything but sugar was safe, and it isn't. Aspartame has a higher glycemic index value than sugar (i.e in triggering an insulin reaction), and is otherwise not healthy. With sweeteners, Stevia as far as I know is okay for use by diabetics, and if you aren't worried about calories, agave. Anything with high net carb loads, like white flour, white rice, potatoes (and I can only image with sweet potatoes) are going to cause issues, whole grains are much better.

There is a lot of real information on treating diabetes with diet and it is really, really important to separate fact from myth. I was on a rescue squad years ago where we had someone who was diabetic who had become unresponsive, there sugar levels were ridiculously high, and when someone talked to her husband it turned out the wife was really, really conscious of being in shape, not getting fat (she was model thin), and one of the things she was doing was practically living on diet soda, which at the time had switched to aspartame and it got to her. Fortunately, there was no lasting damage and one of the guys on the squad was married to a nutritionist, who helped the woman and her husband work out sensible diet and such for her, and last I heard 30 years later she is still alive and kicking;)

Since you are endorsing the American Diabetes Association, you should be aware that it endorses Aspartame.

Furthermore, the glycemic index for Aspartame on it's own is zero. It has zero carbohydrates.

The packets of most artificial sweeteners contain small amounts of dextrose or maltodextrin to create volume.
There is more maltodextrin in the Splenda for baking as that measures the same as sugar cup for cup.
Maltodextrin does have a glycemic index.
1 cup of sugar has 773 calories (all from Carbohydrates) and 1 Cup of the granulated Splenda has 95 calories (also all from Carbohydrates).
Both Splenda and Equal have 4 calories/ packet (sweetness level equal to 2 tsp of sugar) vs 16 calories for 1 teaspoon of sugar.
If something has less than 5 calories/ serving, the FDA allows it to be listed as a no calorie food.

(They do not need to add the volumizer to either Splenda or Equal to sweeten diet beverages.)
