I remember rush when he wasn`t bitter or dark.

When he was still funny and could take a joke.

Now?

I wouldn`t trade lives with him for twice his money.

I do too, but in order to keep a brand like his rolling, you have to adapt to the situation. Right now, 'angry and bitter' is what's paying the rent.

It's his character that's bitter. (Remember "I'm not a doctor but I play one on TV")?
He's an actor who will say or do most anything for money and he discovered something that The Church found out 1000+ years ago. It's far easier to get a dime each from 100,000 poor, ignorant, fearful people than it is to find one intelligent. well educated, content person to give you $10,000.

He panders to the poor, the fearful and the ignorant and gets rich as a result.
