ORIGINAL: Kirata Exactly. Of course Atheists don't believe in God, but he's not talking to Atheists. He's talking to believers, and directly addressing the divisive notion that you can't be good without a belief in God in a way that undercuts that whole crock of shit. I count it a step forward, and for the Catholic church a big one, even if certain professional victims feel compelled to find something to whine about. And honestly I'm not all that offended by the notion either. Either the pope is right about god and whatnot in which case he's probably right about me being a child of god too or else he's not in which case it's all smoke & mirrors and who cares? But I don't need to believe in gravity in order to be constrained by it. If god exists then I don't need to believe in him either. Like everyone else I judge the pope on the basis of his actions not his words or his title. On that basis he's in pretty fucking hot water. On that basis I'm pretty sure Jesus and I would agree assuming any sort of veracity at all in the bible. And honestly, while I'm aware of this business of me going to hell because I don't care about god or jesus my ACTUAL face to face interactions with christians don't go like that.
