A few people have checked out my profile & expressed an interest in my Tarot pastime.
I thought it might be an idea to start a thread about it, you can be a Master/Mistress reader, or a complete novice, everybodys' opinions & contributions will be most welcome

. From the esoteric to the banal.

Why not try a reading on someone? Let's keep it fun though, nothing financial, or health issues. Any attempt to bring down the Spawn of Satan, will be heavily frowned upon, & hopefully removed from the thread

I learned to read tarot cards when I was about eleven. Yeh, I was that kind of kid. When I was about 15, I met a "psychic" who told me that I couldn't actually read the cards because it only works if someone else with a 'gift' gives you some cards after recognising your ability. Since mine had been picked up in an antique store or something, it didn't count. She then gave me another deck, and told me that she 'saw' something and now I should go and learn and come back in two years and read for her. She was... a character. And a total fantasist.

My mother, bless her heart, goes to physics and mediums every now and again. She WANTS to believe. But she never comes out with anything at all. She must just give nothing away. Most people will get some hits and some misses, but come out remembering the hits because they seem more remarkable. My mother comes out with nothing. I feel sorry for her, in a way, because I know she'd really like to hear something meaningful. She reluctantly admits that she no longer believes.

I don't generally tell people I know about reading tarot cards because, frankly, I don't believe in it. Or rather, I believe it can be used as a reflective tool, and help people make sense of decisions they are facing. But I don't believe it involves a special gift or any sort of psychic powers. My success rate is as good as any medium or reader you can hire, but I'm not psychic. It's a trick, a skill of reading body language and probability and using the cards to structure and support what you say. At work a while ago I was mithered until I eventually agreed to give a reading. I told her, very clearly, that I don't believe in psychic powers and how I do it. Nevertheless, she spent the rest of the week going on about how amazing it was, and what it made her think, and how I must have some skill or I couldn't possibly have known.... I never agreed to do it again. I felt like a fraud. It's one thing if you believe it yourself. I don't, any more. It was wrong.

Yes, there are many tales & explanations as to why or how you can read the Tarot, ranging from 'you should never use somebody else's deck', to never buying your own decks, to the various 'rituals' you have to follow. This lady, Athena, may have been a fantasist, but she obviously made a great impact on you, giving you the impetus to delve deeper into the Tarot art. Do you still have the deck she gave you? It must be something very special to you.
I think you're right, the Tarot is a reflective tool, Carl Jung certainly thought so, a bridge between the conscious & unconscious mind. I don't know about you, but, I have many decks, some I have more affinity with than others, but if I'm doing a reading for someone, I'll always let them look through my decks & let them pick the ones for the reading, there's no point in using a deck they don't understand, as they'll get nothing out of the experience. A reading is a two way street, as I always say at the beginning, I have no psychic ability & I would be sceptical if someone told me they did, so yes, I do rely on tells, but I swear the cards are remarkably accurate, but the reader & the querent must meet in the middle & must contribute equally.
This colleague of yours, obviously got a lot out of the reading you did for her, 'it made her think' possibly influencing her to re evaluate her options & lifestyle choices, you were exercising a talent you have for reading the cards, something, one way or another, you spent valuable personal time learning. A Tarot spread does not foretell the future, what it does do, is show a variety of choices that invites you to think about more possible solutions, or outcomes, than you may have thought of before. In no way did you defraud the lady, she enjoyed every minute of the reading, & went away happy & contented, from your point of view, a job well done

. Enjoy the cards, listen to what they have to tell you, my decks speak to me, wait, I'm starting to sound weird

Spread them all out, make up little stories, or films with what you see, as you move about or watch tv, shuffle them, get used to the size of them & their weight in your hands. Is it the deck with the Barbara Moore guide book in the set? I've made up my mind, this Thursday, I'm going to buy a Steampunk deck myself

She did have an impact on me, but perhaps not in a positive way. She struck me as a weak performance artist, a little threatened because a child was sitting before her claiming to do what she could do (it actually wasn't me that told her, it was my mother, but still) and deciding to 're-write' the story so that instead she could be the special person identifying and encouraging a newbie. I could be wrong, of course, but nothing about her made me particularly convinced in her abilities. I do still have the cards she gave me somewhere but I never really used them for the simple reason that they were much too big for my tiny hands. Very offputting and disruptive to drop cards mid-reading while I'm trying to shuffle them or deal them out.

I sound very negative, don't I? In no way do I mean to belittle other's interests and beliefs in tarot or similar things, it's just something that I have come to view very differently over the years. I have seen one or two alleged psychics preying on the misery of other people which has made me very sensitive to the whole 'fraud' issue.

I do still think that the broad field of fortune telling is pretty fascinating from an academic sense. I'd love to study it's place in our culture and collective consciousness.

I agree there are some very unscrupulous people who do prey on the vulnerable, most of them are on CM

! There is a code of conduct, within the Tarot fraternity, that you never discuss finance/health issues, because, it would be a breeding ground for dishonesty, which is unfortunate, as they are the major issues, that people want to know about.
I can in fact separate my love for the Tarot, from 'fortune telling' as I believe the two to be mutually exclusive, but, I do hope you come back to the Tarot, if only for recreational purposes, it seems such a wonderful thing to be able to do, & to let it slide, would be a waste

I know what you mean about separating it from 'fortune telling' and I didn't mean to oversimplify, it was the first term that came into my head to cover tarot, scrying, rune reading, etc etc. I guess 'divination' slipped my mind.

A tarot forum...very cool idea. I've been into the tarot since I was about 22. I've learned a lot about them since then, but I am by no means an expert. I'm what some people call a "sensitive"...meaning I can often see or hear spirits, even though it scares me a bit. Sometimes when I read for someone, I get other impressions about the person or situation that isn't always from the cards. Its very strange, a bit frightening, but usually very interesting. I guess we all use and interpret the cards in our own way. Has anyone ever done a long distance reading? Like if the seeker is on the phone with you. Do you do the reading in some other way if the person is not able to shuffle the cards themself?

I have the Goddess deck. The art work on it is absolutely beautiful. I'll pick it up for a week or so, leave it alone for much too long, pick it back up for another week and repeat cycle.

How I learned Tarot is NOT to memorize book meanings. But to keep a journal, study each card and give it your own meaning. I also am going to step in it and say I don't do "spreads". I simply lay out 5 randomly selected cards, meditate on them and jot down any thoughts that pop into my head.

Can anyone read tea leaves? I know it's a fairly unfashionable thing, but I acquired one of these cup of fortune which combines tea-leaves with the old-school playing card readings. It's really quite lovely, and much simpler than traditional tea-leaf reading.

I have a couple of tarot decks floating around at my place. One I bought years ago, when I first started playing around with spiritual and personal beliefs (I read a lot about wicca and the occult too, though never actually practiced anything). I did the things they say to do to make a deck yours, shuffled them, kept them with me, slept with them under my pillow to "charge" them with my personal energy. Not because I actually believed it would make a difference, but what did it hurt to try? I never really got good enough to be able to read them without looking up every card in the book they came with. Sooo tedious. Lol.

I did do a number of readings on myself, and found it very helpful as an introspecive tool. As Gary said, it can show you different ways of thinking about the problems you face, sometimes leading you to new conclusions. I would never treat it as a fortune telling and base important decisions solely on what the cards said. But I've had some very illuminating readings that showed me where my current path would lead if things didn't change. Of course, with me both doing the reading and receiving the reading, I saw the connections that I were most on my mind. But, I also knew the question/concern intimately, so there is no guessing or reading body language.

My second deck is an Arthurian (sp?) deck. It was a present from a friend because he knows I love stories and legends surrounding King Arthur. I haven't done anything with that deck. Not enough time for all of my hobbies these days.

^^^ I've been reading tarot for 40 years, but have only used the Mother Peace Deck for the past 25 yrs. Why this deck? First, they are all-inclusive in terms of sex, race and "religious" affiliations. Secondly, they are circular, which shows regard for all things "cunt." Unlike angular decks, these show where the energy is flowing from, or going to, in the process of learning some spiritual lesson. This differs greatly from the dichotomous basis of most decks - ie/ up=good, down = bad. Those are value judgments and have nothing to do with spiritual growth.

Reading tarot is a spiritual service and it is an honor to be a part of anyone's spiritual journey.

In terms of credulity, for me, the proof's in the pudding. I read accurately. Decades of experience confirms this. Some things ARE fate, destiny... not a darned thing anyone can do about them. They exist, even before they exist. Only some will understand that last sentence. But, mostly, I'd agree that the cards show the past, the present, and the likely future should the person being read continue on the path they are on - which means, if they don't like the "outcome," change things now.

I learned the cards by meditation. I'd "go in" the card, and once within, use my senses. The temperature, the lighting, how crowded, what is the energy of being "in" that card. That took about a year of daily practice. The result is this... when I read, since I already know my own relationship with the card, whatever is different, is the energy of the one being read. It's "their" energy.

Also, there is no need to avoid reading any issue that comes up in a reading. Over the years, my experience is that when the Death card comes up, the person being read already knows who it is. Most times, it does NOT foretell physical death, rather a definite transition. My personal view is that if it comes up in the reading, it is not for me to "play God" and pick and choose what is revealed.

As for frauds... yeah, there are humans who miss the point of living and act in untrue ways towards others. Sad saps!

I often say that I cannot read myself, but I don't think that's exactly true. Often, I do know things without evidence or reason. I tend to second guess myself and try to leave room for the possibility of seeing what I want to see and not what is actually there. So, I rarely, rarely use the tarot to divine my own future.

The cards themselves have the energy of paper and dyes. Like anything else... they aren't good or bad, but they can be used for both. I choose "good."

I read tea leaves, too, Athena.

Also, in my other rather lengthy post... I didn't mention that I don't need the cards to read a person. Sometimes, I just know. Sometimes, like while doing a reading, I need to center myself in preparation of spiritual service AND I need the person who wishes to know, to be open to knowing.

This is true whether reading tea leaves, cards, palms, runes, etc...

I've been reading them for myself only for about a year. I used to use the I Ching, with great results, but I'm attracted to the tarot over the somewhat "dry" text of the I Ching. I'm no psychic or medium; I use books by Rachel Pollack to interpret the meanings. That way I'm more confident I'm not interjecting my wishful thinking into the cards that come up. I use the Haindl tarot deck. Amazing results. I am looking forward to developing my skills with interpretation over time.

I'm not sure which ones they are. They are called angel cards. When I find them I'll let ya know. The steam punk ones are beautiful!

I've actually done a reading over the phone with a friend in the past, only for fun though, it's not the most ideal situation is it

I was interested in Athena mentioning Divination, gleaning information from the subconscious, or what some people would call the other world. I've met a couple of people who can pick up on psychic vibes, but, I confess that I cannot. It is amazing though how accurate the cards can be. Everyday I pick out three cards & see how well they reflect my day, & they are usually pretty good.
It could be said that my conscious mind is trying to make the events of my day conform with the spread, they may have a point, but in any case, it allows anybody to learn the cards by using everyday experiences.

So Athena, are you tempted to pick up a Tarot deck again?

I just thought, as you have a Tarot pack, it might be an interesting idea if you picked out five cards 1. Work
2. Home
3. Unexpected
4. Your Actions
5. Outcome
Put them down on this forum.
This would give an overview of your day, & we could all try & interpret the spread, & see how good we really are

Everyone can volunteer. Like an Eng Lit exam there's no 'right' answer.

Yes a friend of mine has the Goddess deck, it is beautiful. I totally agree about the learning meanings by the book, the books normally are a very enjoyable read, but if you're sitting in front of a load of cards, your mind swimming, trying to remember what it said in the book, you're not enjoying it, & you're not doing the reading
