Mainly because she insisted on paying me for my time and knows that it is exhausting to do them. That , to me, is more acceptable than just charging for a reading at a set price. This same person is having a graduation party for her daughter and asked if I would be willing to come do readings at it for those that wanted one.

I used to do Tarot but I 'lost' my touch. Had a lovely collection of them too. It is hard to do a reading when one's mind is cloudy, particularly with mental illness. I also come from family of sensitives...Dad could tell when a spirit was nearby and I get antsy as well. I lie every time when I go see my p-doc...I still hear 'voices' but I tell them to stop. At times when Mom and I go to garage sales, I refuse to get out of the van. Mom is starting to trust my instincts. I probably got a deck over here but I can't remember where they are.

I agree, intuition is 90% in a reading, you can read as many books as you like, but if you're lacking intuition, readings would be very dry. All of us, male or female contain what Jung calls the 'Animus' & 'Anima', male & female spirits. It can be very easy to stereotype people, ( he's over 40, & a solicitor, so therefore he must be represented by the King of Swords), but look a little deeper, & maybe a female court card may be more appropriate.

Thanks BS, I'll check out 'Understanding The Tarot Court', everyone I know that reads Tarot, has had trouble with the court cards at some stage in their development. When I was having problems with them, I used to think of friends with similar characteristics, & it seemed to work.

I loved your cheat sheet I already copy/pasted it for handy reference in word for printing. The only reason I mentioned characteristics was because when I first started reading I took everything the books said by heart and pushed away my own intuition. I became frustrated because I felt drawn to reading and yet my readings all seemed off. When I would go back and compare my journals to my readings it was aggravating until I learned to just let go and trust my instincts and put everything together. My readings became far more accurate when I did that. I think the basis of it is to trust yourself and the intuition you have based on the cards.

I must admit I do sometimes read the literature, but the authors of the books are basing their writings on their intuition. Sometimes their intuition is out of sync with ours [:)]! Yes, be true to ourselves.

Over the years (more than I care to say) I've just learned that for me certain cards usually signify certain things. I also find that where I am drawn to on a card also can mean something in particular. I have a gorgeous Michelangelo deck that is based on his drawings but my 30+ yr old Rider Waite deck is my go to deck for everyday readings. They have very detailed art work on some cards and depending on where my eye lands on that individual card can often tell me something. Probably the hardest thing for me to configure is timing. While I know the 4 suits are matched to certain seasons I find it harder to associate time periods, if that makes sense.

It makes total sense, in the 'Druidcraft' wonderful companion book, apart from giving an insightful overview of the Wicca & Druid traditions, plus lucid explanations of the cards themselves. It matches the suits up with the seasons. Pentacles - Winter. Swords - Spring. Wands - Summer. Cups - Autumn. I find a Celtic Cross covers a time period of one to three months. I know that you can do readings for longer periods, but I find the outcomes are a little ambiguous & fuzzy. I like the daily ones I give to myself [:)].

I do have a question...how do you accurately gauge time? For example, if I do a reading for someone who wants to know when they will get a new job, and I see a few aces or the magician, I would say they would find that job within a year. But maybe its one month or one week. Is there a way to distinguish between units of time?

Kitty...Gary can probably answer that better than I can. Although Gary I've always read the past and future cards of the Celtic cross as 6mo ahead or 6mo past then used the suit or card to narrow things down. the link I just posted above has a variation in the seasons from yours. I wonder if that is based on the difference in the Wiccan Shabbats? Interesting.

I'm getting from the posts that maybe Jo and Gary use the Celtic Cross spread for questions covering a longer time period, 1 to 6 months range, but for shorter or daily readings, do you use different spreads? I've used the Celtic Cross spread sometimes a few times in a week on the same issue, but I'm thinking a more abbreviated spread might be better for the daily or less in-depth questions. Rachel Pollack created her own spread called "The Work", which isn't about work, but is oriented directly toward advice. "The Work" is 3 cards in the middle of the spread that advise you what to do, what you're working with. I like that one since I am usually looking for advice, not just a picture. You guys are filling up my Amazon cart [:D]

When I read the first list of seasons/suits they didn't feel right to me. The associations in the link you posted very much do. Gary posted a daily spread he uses for himself and I often do a single card or a 3 card spread daily for my heads up on what the day might hold. There is also a 3 card yes/no spread I use when I'm pondering something. I do an annual 12 month spread as well at the beginning of spring that gives me an overview of what the year ahead might hold in store. Simply lay 12 cards in a clock wise circle. The first card at the top is April and around the clock each subsequent card is May, june, etc. back to March at the 11 o"clock position. I have done it for years and it gives me a heads up on what to watch out for in the months ahead.
