This may be a dumb question, but the deck I have is from my mother. She died recently. Is it okay for me to use it?

Hi MasterCaneman, It's an old wives tale that says you can't use someone else's Tarot deck. I have several second hand decks, & some given as gifts, I use the ones I'm comfortable with. Yes it certainly is ok to use your Mothers deck.

Use with peace, love & good memories.

Best wishes, Gary.

Hi BS, I love your invocation, I feel I might work on something.

I never put a deck in order, & shuffle a new deck thoroughly, I feel a deck has history, & to re-order the deck would be like wiping the memory clean, but, as always that's only a personal opinion.

Best wishes, G.

I had a very rare pleasure yesterday.

my 12 yo boy has a friend over for a summer visit kind of stay. He's here for a week . He was looking at the bookshelf of cards I have - the ones I keep on display in the collection. (That's about 55 decks) He said he wanted to learn about Tarot, in the most hesitant gentle voice. I insisted he get his Mom on the phone and get permissions. She and I had a chat and she insisted he learn whatever he wanted to know.

In my life I had chosen Tarot as a shameful secret. I was Catholic so even my underwear was a shameful secret. Even sharing my middle name with people was a shameful admission of pride. But here is a young boy asking and getting an all-clear. My own son looked at it as something dorky - until yesterday.

We held a 2 hour tutorial on Tarot - what it is, what it isn't.

In that short talk I found in my head, I found several articles about the Major Arcana I want to write or express (Why is the High Priestess holding the Law in her lap?; What is the biggest triumph of the black Lord of Illusion in The Devil; Why you must extinguish your own fears in reading; Why are all the Elementals in The Wheel of Fortune reading?) It was a good session ending with us going through all the silly decks I have collected over the years (The Du Whacky Du - the loftiest heights of stoner philosophy - is high among that collection. OK - pun intended)

That was my first time doing this tutorial for kids - they hung tough with some dense concepts! Proud of them!

Hiya TND!

How are you getting on with your new Steampunk Deck?

Hi there, I have been playing with my angel cards a bit more. Learning them is easier, so far.

Hi BS, My mother has been a life long Catholic, & I remember stories she used to tell me about her school days in St Joseph's convent in Ilford, back in the 1930s, having to bathe with smocks on, as the body was sinful etc, laughable really, & other things I can't talk about on an open forum. It's put me off all forms of organised religion for good.

I'm so pleased you've found an avenue to pass your knowledge on, I think we'll all look forward to your articles, I've suggested to a friend of mine here that she contacts you, I hope you don't mind, of course, I've told her nothing personal, just that you're very kind hearted & knowledgeable.

Best wishes, Gary.

Answering several of your questions at once here.

First, I do have a reading ritual that I perform, whether reading for myself or another. I like a quiet space with no distractions. I use a round table with a round handmade lace doily so my cards are placed within a spiritual circle. I light some candles, I make myself a cup of tea. The cards are in order, as I do that before I put them away.

There is a good chance I will play soothing music. My aim is to put myself in an open and responsive state.

I shuffle the cards three times then I lay out a standard 10 card celtic cross. If I am reading for another, I let them choose which card to begin the reading. I want to elicit as much information about their situation as I can, and I try to use the cards to do that.

I don't have an issue with pulling reference material out to find further information if I'm reading for another. I don't charge for readings, though I admit I have done mass readings for charity.

Once the reading is done, I put the cards back in order.

As for reading for yourself, in my mind, you should. How else are you going to learn? You know your own personal issues and struggles the best. The one thing I will caution against is doing too many readings on the same subject or question within a short period of time. In other words, if the cards gave you an answer, don't keep reading b/c you don't like the answer. Accept it, and then think about what you need to do to move yourself forward.

I tend to wait a while before I repeat a personal question to my deck, a nice cup of black coffee & maybe Tchaikovskys 'None But The Lonely Heart'', or something of a similar ilk on the cd player, that usually does it for me .

I was in the pub yesterday afternoon, reading 'Everyday Tarot Essentials' by James Lynn Page, £5.99/$10? Really tacky front cover, but, an excellent read. I have no problem recommending it!

Humble Thanks Gary! Sure - I would enjoy speaking/corresponding with your friend.

I started writing the piece on the Lord of Illusion - I think that's going to be controversial. I was going to post those essays here and then pass them onto other placements. I've already made somewhat a collection of them

I started looking at the Major Arcana and gathering their meaning as an advanced exercise. This was not just working their memorized meanings. I did this in line with a story. There is a perhaps apocryphal story about Alister Crowley spending a couple years dressed as each of the figures of the Major Arcana while he was making this now famous Thoth deck. He spent an entire moon as that character, morning noon and night. This has been held as a way of explaining how he was considered a Satanist (while he dressed as The Devil) and a cross dresser (while he was the High Priestess) and just insane (while he was the Fool) and such.

I am not independently wealthy and not committed to that depth, but in my own way tried this. So I did a meditation where i sat before a mirror and WAS that card for an hour. I worked to make this one goal - if I was that card, what would I most likely say to a reader looking in on me? What would I do? What would I show a seeker? What is my dirty secret?

WOOF that took me down pathways of meaning I NEVER suspected were in those cards! These essays are based on those ruminations. I finally understood the High Priest; I got a deep embrace with the Lovers; i found The Chariot my BIG brother and the being I most love in the Tarot. (The Hermit told me buzz off and to try other choice unnatural acts... but I got what he showed. I made points by laughing with him.)

Take a moment. Lay out the Major Arcana in 4 rows - The Fool (0) at the top by itself; 1-7; 8-14- 15-21
Examine these rows and take some time. Watch how the columns resolve. Look at similarities. (High Priestess, Justice, with columns, Moon and Death with the Two Towers; look at rivers and mountains and common terrain.) Now look at the math and see if it works - 5+2=7 but does The Heirophant + The High Priestess = The Chariot? How is that true? How is that false? What makes the difference? When you isolate that difference, is it one of the other cards? try this examination with other cards. notice in that math, everything + 1 Magician becomes the NEXT thing. in that math, the Fool is part of it all - but none of it is sensibly divisible by "Fool.":

After gaining some comfort in this examination (This could take weeks...) pick one and stand in the shoes and clothes and regalia of that card. Be that card for a moment. Speak to me.

You will find one that you speak for EASILY.
You should find several that you argued with suddenly become more understandable.
You will find some you can not speak for because they hurt or are just alien to you.

These conclusions you make are individual and will be critical in outlining your next study in the Tarot.

I love you and wish you luck. This is hard work and AMAZINGLY REWARDING. You may be brittle afterward. Treat yourself well when you are done. A good supply of puppies and a hug from your local Leatherman might be required. (Your mileage may vary)

Greetings

Ohhh a Tarot thread here on Collarme, wonderful.

I have been reading Tarot cards since I was about 15 years old. I have several decks but my favorite is the Cosmic Tarot.

Now as for how many times one can ask a deck the same question. I do not think asking again do any harm, however I do not think it do much good either unless it is either for clarification of the answer, to redo the reading as you bungled it or the situation have changed. It is like checking the clock five times in one minute. Nope still 3,15 so it is not likely to give more insight and are instead likely to just start creating confusing answers. as you then get the answer you want instead of what is true.

I wish you all well

Hi nephandi,

Yes, I really think your analogy holds true, if you receive an answer from the Tarot, accept it, unless you need to expand on it.

Welcome to the Tarot forum, Gary.

FR~

I have tried three Tarot card readings (and a few others like palm reading etc) over the years.
And to be honest, none of them have come anywhere near what has transpired since.

So I have no faith whatsoever in these 'readings'.
To me, it's all mumbo jumbo and for some people, a way to make money for old rope.
It's a bit like reading your stars in the snoozepapers.
For most people, they can find a way of making what they read into some sort of reality in their life.

I'm sorry that you've had bad experiences with Tarot & palmistry, & yes you're right, there are charlatans in this field, as in any other, giving honest, dedicated readers a bad name, but, if you keep an open mind perhaps something might happen to lead you to re assess your opinion.

Gary.

I sincerely hope not!

I cannot for the life of me understand why, someone else's opinion of what might happen in my life, should be of any real relevance to me whatsoever.
I run my life how *I* want to run it, and to be honest, I should not take on board any of these opinions (because that's all they are) in order to do what I want.

So to me, all of such people are nothing more than charletons trying to influent my life and often in a way that I don't find helpful or even intuitive.
Sure, if you are of that type of disposition, it may be beneficial use to you.
But I think for most people that have a definitive and positive outlook on their own life and destiny, it's is more than unhelpful and in some cases, downright destructive by possibly planting a seed of doubt in their otherwise positive minds.

As a piece fo light-hearted play, it's fine.
But it should never be taken with anything more than a whole ocean of salt.

So I disagree it is anything to do with charletons at all (although there are many).
The whole subject is probably harmful to most positive thinking people.
And in no way can that ever be contrived as a positive thing to be promoting.

just my

I insist your comment is truly valid. I agree, I study Tarot for reasons you truly do not comprehend and glad you confess that you don't.

In our own scholar's writings there are many quotable moments where Crowley, Waite, Blavatsky, Rousseau and others have railed about the damage and uselessness brought about by fortune tellers. Crowley was furious with fortune tellers because they were always the first freaks seen by the world when anyone evaluates any magical tradition. They rarely speak with study and science behind them, and over state their abilities and scope of sight. Penn 7 Teller are quite eloquent about them and please don't miss that show if you want to ever have any self respect as a reader. People ARE watching your work and every word matters!

I found Crowley's particular rant (rants seem available in every one of his books, but this one in his opus on Astrology) where he pointed out that if you dare to try to discuss astrology without first studying astronomy and psychology and even anatomy and physiology, you are wasting everyone's time. Similar mentions were made by Waite, Blavatsky, and Rousseau.

You however made me laugh when stating... " I cannot for the life of me understand why, someone else's opinion of what might happen in my life, should be of any real relevance to me whatsoever.
I run my life how *I* want to run it, and to be honest, I should not take on board any of these opinions (because that's all they are) in order to do what I want."

You can drive without road signs. You can refuse to watch the news. You can tumble dry and wash with unlike colors. You can touch this plate even if it's hot. You can burn all the books because they are all just opinions... do what you care to baby. You don't have to do anything and no one said you must. Your ignorance is a treasure - guard it! GGRRrrrr!!!

Bigsqueezer's call for insight made me wonder what everyone thinks about reading the cards for oneself. Do you think we can be objective enough, to set aside wishful thinking, to accurately interpret the cards we lay out? I think sometimes I go too far in the other direction and look for more grim or dire meanings just to avoid putting too wishful a spin on my readings. I've never done a reading for someone else but I may be doing my first this weekend.

I do daily readings for myself as well as monthly and yearly. The difficulty is objectivity. But it is possible.

Sorry I've been laying low with a flu bug and haven't checked back here. How did your reading go?

I have some insight for you. Let me know if you want me to inbox it to you or just lay it out here.

You are very kind to have me state a preference - I offered the honest question to show how the Tarot works. If you feel as a reader that privacy is more important please PM me your advice. I thank you in advance.

My deepest apologies. I've been down with the flu. I'm sending a pm right after I finish this. Not sure it will help but may be something to ponder.

Whilst I respect your opinion, & your right to hold it, this forum is essentially for those who have a love, or interest in the Tarot at whatever level. As you seem to think the Tarot is some form of parlour trick, perhaps your time would be better employed pursuing other discussion boards.

All good wishes, Gary.

I didn't get a chance to do a reading. But new books from my Amazon cart filled with books from this thread have arrived and I'm really looking forward to them!

Fellow readers, can you help me out here?

I did a 5-card yes/no reading about a long-time (15 years) friend of mine. He used to be an avid traveler, contra dancer, music and event lover, very adventurous, outgoing, social and loyal to his friends/extended family. Though we dated at one time, we haven't been involved that way for more than ten years. Up 'til now we've enjoyed an amicable friendship.

A little over a year ago he started dating someone who seems very insecure and intent on restricting his life (not a d/s thing, btw). Our circle met her, welcomed her in, then watched him instantly drop out of everything. The other day I texted an innocuous language question (he speaks arabic) and the girlfriend used his phone to reply that she's 'old fashioned' and not comfortable with my continuing to be friends with him, and 'they' wish me the best, signed x AND y, etc. I don't buy anything about 'them' unless I hear it from him but she appears to be controlling his communication and is likely monitoring his email and phone, deciding on her own what to send and what to delete.

So I asked the cards if he is aware she is deliberately alienating his friends and is willingly going along with it. Here's what I got in a straight line from left to right:

10 Pentacles (up) 4 Pentacles (up) 9 Rods (reversed) 4 Swords (up) Page Cups (up)

I have my interpretation of this, but if anyone would like to take a stab at it I'd love your input since I am having a hard time being objective.

Huge thanks if you can!
