ORIGINAL: garyFLR Hi BS, My mother has been a life long Catholic, & I remember stories she used to tell me about her school days in St Joseph's convent in Ilford, back in the 1930s, having to bathe with smocks on, as the body was sinful etc, laughable really, & other things I can't talk about on an open forum. It's put me off all forms of organised religion for good. I'm so pleased you've found an avenue to pass your knowledge on, I think we'll all look forward to your articles, I've suggested to a friend of mine here that she contacts you, I hope you don't mind, of course, I've told her nothing personal, just that you're very kind hearted & knowledgeable. Best wishes, Gary. Humble Thanks Gary! Sure - I would enjoy speaking/corresponding with your friend. I started writing the piece on the Lord of Illusion - I think that's going to be controversial. I was going to post those essays here and then pass them onto other placements. I've already made somewhat a collection of them I started looking at the Major Arcana and gathering their meaning as an advanced exercise. This was not just working their memorized meanings. I did this in line with a story. There is a perhaps apocryphal story about Alister Crowley spending a couple years dressed as each of the figures of the Major Arcana while he was making this now famous Thoth deck. He spent an entire moon as that character, morning noon and night. This has been held as a way of explaining how he was considered a Satanist (while he dressed as The Devil) and a cross dresser (while he was the High Priestess) and just insane (while he was the Fool) and such. I am not independently wealthy and not committed to that depth, but in my own way tried this. So I did a meditation where i sat before a mirror and WAS that card for an hour. I worked to make this one goal - if I was that card, what would I most likely say to a reader looking in on me? What would I do? What would I show a seeker? What is my dirty secret? WOOF that took me down pathways of meaning I NEVER suspected were in those cards! These essays are based on those ruminations. I finally understood the High Priest; I got a deep embrace with the Lovers; i found The Chariot my BIG brother and the being I most love in the Tarot. (The Hermit told me buzz off and to try other choice unnatural acts... but I got what he showed. I made points by laughing with him.) Take a moment. Lay out the Major Arcana in 4 rows - The Fool (0) at the top by itself; 1-7; 8-14- 15-21 Examine these rows and take some time. Watch how the columns resolve. Look at similarities. (High Priestess, Justice, with columns, Moon and Death with the Two Towers; look at rivers and mountains and common terrain.) Now look at the math and see if it works - 5+2=7 but does The Heirophant + The High Priestess = The Chariot? How is that true? How is that false? What makes the difference? When you isolate that difference, is it one of the other cards? try this examination with other cards. notice in that math, everything + 1 Magician becomes the NEXT thing. in that math, the Fool is part of it all - but none of it is sensibly divisible by "Fool.": After gaining some comfort in this examination (This could take weeks...) pick one and stand in the shoes and clothes and regalia of that card. Be that card for a moment. Speak to me. You will find one that you speak for EASILY. You should find several that you argued with suddenly become more understandable. You will find some you can not speak for because they hurt or are just alien to you. These conclusions you make are individual and will be critical in outlining your next study in the Tarot. I love you and wish you luck. This is hard work and AMAZINGLY REWARDING. You may be brittle afterward. Treat yourself well when you are done. A good supply of puppies and a hug from your local Leatherman might be required. (Your mileage may vary)
