ORIGINAL: LittleGirlHeart Last visit his dr said he really should go 100 percent no carb, of any kind and every dietician and diabetes class I have gone to says we need carbs for our brain, I do not trust the 100 percent no carb thing. That no carb diet link posted here is loaded with carbs, lol. At least 20-40 grams worth per day. The old fashioned Atkins' Diet from the seventies was better at explaining about carbs...grapefruit, all types of berries, lemon and lime are very low carb. Each artificial sweetener packet is close to one carb (most have some dextrose, etc.) Of the meats, plain broiled or boiled chicken will have a bit more (natural) carbs in it than other meats. All fruits and veggies and grains have carbs...the trick is finding out which ones are low in sugars and starches. When I'm going on Atkins for a month each year to keep my blood pressure in the normal range, I will have cabbage, onions, avocado, cucumbers, bell peppers, mushrooms, olives, dill pickles, spinach, squash, all kinds of lettuce, etc., inistead of peas, corn, potatoes, carrots (high in sugars), and sweet potato. Remember, if it comes from a plant of any kind, it has carbs. Be sure to keep cheese cubes (not low fat, or the carb count will be higher), boiled eggs, cut fresh veggies, and bits or slices of cooked meat in your fridge so that when hunger hits you...you can eat immediately. Keep fatty nuts nearby so you can grab a handfull if you feel snackish (pecans, wallnuts). I keep a jar with almonds where I sit down and watch tv. Also, a jar of fresh cranberries that I cut in half last season, and shook in a colander to remove most of the seeds, then dried out in my food dehydrator. Pack an insulated snack bag for when you're out shopping with others and they might want to grab a snack at the mall...you'll have something to eat even though it's not what they're eating. I put a thingy in the bag that's hard plastic with blue gel, from my freezer, to keep my food cold. I've been doing Atkins right now, these past two or three weeks. I'm always full and get more natural vitamins when dieting than at any other time. Also, this is the only time I enjoy eating nuts, lol. My blood pressure had gone up to the medium zone and I was worried about it spiking again (2 years ago I had a lot of blood clots in my lungs from having gone on a birth control pill, lost 25% of my lungs and have had problems with blood pressure until I resumed doing Atkins once per year). My BP was way down again by the 3rd day on my diet. I do a harder level of Atkins. Not the Ongoing Weight Loss, where I could have 60 or more grams of carbs per day. I don't do Induction phase anymore either (that one goes for 2 weeks, limiting complete carb count per day to only 20). Sticking with 40 total grams of carbs (minusing off fiber grams of carbs because they won't raise one's blood glucose at all) per day, and no more than 20 per meal. I eat as much as I want, and often, but this often means that I'm putting half of my food away in the fridge to snack on later. Meat and eggs are very filling, especially when it is prepared in a way that raises the fat content. I buy low fat ground beef (in big logs from Sams) and cook a large patty in a skillet with olive oil. Eggs...I frequently make deviled eggs. My blood fats are excellent, worlds better than my mother who is on an almost no fat diet and takes Lipitor. What I had for breakfast today: hot tea a whole grapefruit a large ham steak, probably over 8 oz. Today's lunch: diet A&W Rootbeer (I love this and had two cans I sipped during two tv shows) a raw veggie plate of...two stalks of celery, 1/2 to 2/3 C. raw broccoli, and two sliced mushrooms homemade dip made of 1/2 sour cream, 1/2 mayo (neither of these are low fat types, or anything with added starch), crumbled blue cheese, some salt and pepper (I was bad and didn't felt like eating meat or eggs...my ketone level dropped down from 40-80 down to 15.) Dinner: Homemade hot cocoa (boil water in a microwave, take out and add a rounded or heaped tablespoon of cocoa powder into the mug, a pinch of potassium...not salt, use a salt substitute that's all potassium, 2-4 oz of half and half for a 16 oz mug, and sweetner packets. I use a packet or two of Truvia and some Splenda) 2/3 C. of fresh mushrooms cooked in a pan that has a small steak (small for me, lol) in it a large mug of hot tea Planned late night snack: (If my ketones are up to 40, at least) 2/3 cup of fresh strawberries with some Truvia sprinkled on top another mug of tea This past week I've had tuna salad on celery (I like the crunch), pork roast, chicken breast, steak, ham, bacon, polska kielbasa, and Jimmy Dean cooked and frozen sausage patties, omelettes (often with a crumbled up sausage patty, with either onion or cheese). This coming payday I'm going to buy some jumbo shrimp to add to a stir fry or else have some with some homemade cocktail sauce (take some low carb catsup and mix in a little ground, in a bottle, horseradish). I've had all kinds of low carb veggies and berries (usually blueberry, strawberry, raspberry, cranberry, and blackberry) and citrus (but not oranges or tangerienes, these are too high in sugar). Tomorrow or the next day I'm going to dig out the blender and put in some sweetner, water, some ice, a splash of lemon juice (I buy these in huge bottles at Sams), and several strawberries. Yum! I might have this with a ham steak an some green beans. Atkins' type diets reduce your hunger after the first week, and will reduce the amount it takes for your stomach to feel full. Never let five hours go by, while you're awake, without eating something. I take a daily multi-vitamin as well as flaxseed oil capsules and calcium capsules. If I forget the calcium pills two days in a row, I'm prone to getting leg cramps. I've often been on 40 grams of carbs per day for 2-4 months at a time with no problems. If only I could afford to eat this way all year long, instead of eating cheap, with lots of grains and sugary fruits (bananas and oranges instead of grapefruit and berries) and starchy veggies. I'm working on it though, will have an indoor greenhouse up and going in the next few months so I can be growing my own lettuces in my house. My lettuce money can be then better spent on berries and meat, lol. A lot of us do fine on very low carb diets. Eating gets so...boring...most of the time. It's not like having the joy of eating pizza where I feel I've almost died and gone to heaven. Food is just food and I know I need to eat the right balance each day. Don't get me wrong...it tastes GOOD, but...only those sugary, starchy carbs can give me that addict's thrill of getting her fix. Having a diet based on meats (think of it as the new bottom part of your food pyramid) will slow down your calorie absorbsion (I'm not looking up the proper spelling of that, lol), making the energy time released instead of hitting your blood stream like a mack truck. Your energy will be evened out, after the first few days, unless...you forget to eat for five or more hours.
