I'd overlooked the practical aspect. This looks bad. I don't think that Christie has a chance in the primary because he's too flexible. If anyone on that list other than Christie is the nominee, November 2016 will be a slaughter. And if past is any clue, the GOP will get even crazier. We've got a dysfunctional system in which the national scene is getting increasingly skewed Democratic, and the House is getting more dug in. If the GOP gets pushed out, as they seem to be working toward, we'll have a one party system, and that ain't good - likely worse than the partisan gridlock we have now.

The Democrats controlled both houses and the Presidency during the new deal which saved us from both the depression and a flirtation with fascism. The Democrats again controlled all of government when LBJ passed Medicare and the antipoverty programs that cut the poverty rate in this nation nearly in half. The 2 times in the last century that Republicans controlled all of government, Hoover and W, were actually unmitigated disasters. There might be a trend in there somewhere.

In the seventies Labour went too far left. When Thatcher got in, she went too far right. in 1997 when Labout got back in, under Blair, he tried to move the party more to the centrist. Now we have ended up with a coalition, with both parties trying to move either right or left. I am pretty sure if one party stayed close to the centre they would be voted in time and time again. I am just not sure if that would be healthy or not.
