In response to feastie...

Free speech is weakness now, is it?  Celebrities who can be heard should be stifled, whilst the "little people" who have minimal influence can speak freely?  Dissent should be stamped down and debate should be censored.

An interesting concept of democracy...

How strong is the nation which cannot accommodate freedom of speech - and, of necessity, freedom of thought?  What DID you people achieve on the 4th of July?

No wonder people the world over hold you in contempt.

Equality in freedom of speech is the point, Stephen.

Yes they did. I don't like it, but there is no law saying they have to play anyone's music.

dont forget we the public own the airwaves, not clear channel.

Then you need to start your own radio station.

irishbynature , the huge diference betweeen what the nazis did  and people lining up to burn the dixie chick cds is this , the people burning the cds are DOING SO BY CHOICE , just as you choose to agree with  what she said , unfortunatly we are also in the position to choose to NOT BUY THeir cd nor go to their concerts.in her arrogance and idolated nature, she forgot one thing, if one takes a political stance , not everyone is required to agree with her! The aftermath of her words are what really bothered me. I'm sure many of you saw people lining up and burning their CD's, and even, throwing them in piles for a bulldozer to crush.  History demonstrated to us that the Nazis engaged in this behavior. This is what bothered me the most.

Who was playing the part of Hitler and ordered this done?  How is this even close to what hitler was doing? Was Bush ordering all the records burned?  Where are all the homes that were broke into and ransacked to get there records to burn so this can even be close to what was done by Hitler?

which brings me to another point , why is it that everyone in this country( and others) that makes a successfull movie or CD , thinks they need to become the polical spokesperson for our times! if they would have  just stuck to playing music , whish is what they are good at, they would not have had this problem, as i suspect i would have problems if i started preaching  law or medicine! So celebrities shouldn't voice their opinions?

They're not allowed to sing what they want without there record company approval, why should they be allowed to say what they want?

It's like what Larry the Cable Guy said about how you have to think of what your fans think and feel. Saying that you're ashamed that George Bush is from TX is like going into a Trailer Park with a Mega Phone yelling "Wall Mart SUCKS!!"

Jody...I agree that not everyone has to agree with her (smiles)..it's just the reaction that bothered me; hence, CD burnings, etc....reminded me of the Nazi frenzy..that's all.

Actually, I wasn't meaning "Hitler" himself, rather, the reaction of the people (Nazis) via burning books, records (even blues and swing) were banned because of their content. That's all. Never said GW was to be compared to Hilter...only the reaction to the DC for their comments by some people....which, under Free Speech, they did have a right to burn their music, CD's..bulldoze, etc....Again, it was the reaction that was startling because the Nazis engaged in some of the same behaviors.

It's interesting how people get offended by an artist expressing an option.  Of course, I don't suppose most people would heave out a Picasso (another political artist), but CDs are cheaper.

How do the anti-DC people feel about Reagan?  He was active in McCarthy's hunt for "communists"?  How about the cowardly draft-dodging John Wayne?  We can't forget about the traitorous pacifist Aristophanes.  Francis Scott Key was a racist who was willing to kill people who dared educate Blacks.  GB Shaw tried to tear apart the British Empire and Orwell was what Bush calls a "waffler" first supporting Russia and then, after actually seeing how they operated, opposing them.

What's a litmus test for me is, if a person is incensed about a celebrity using his or her fame for some cause that they object to, do they equally object to celebrities using fame to support a cause they agree with?  If their ire is side sensitive, that comes across as a hypocrite to me.

I always say it's a free country as long as you agree. As a musician I always have to laugh when someone tells me to shut up but keep singing. It's like they want a record playing and not a real person.
More power to them for speaking up and my hope is on this 4th our troops come home soon and the bloodshed stops for all.

Yeah, esp. the part that she'd "better shut up and sing" or they would harm her....how can one 'shut up' and sing at the same time....good point 81song.

But of course, why would someone object to someone that shares their narrow point of view then hides behind an american flag.

I can respect your view but to say this was even close to what happened then just makes me laugh. Every Cd, record or tape that was destoryed of the DC was paid for by the people doing it. The Nazis came and took everything by force. Bottom line is the DC just made more money when people had to go out and pay to get there crap to destory. But then I don't care for country, so it didn't matter to me one way or the other. I wasn't going to go pay to get something to burn.

You mean like Bush proclaiming that disagreement with him is tanamount to treason?  Yup, I agree with you.

Of course, if you mean using the First Amendement to speak out, it becomes a bit more iffy since that would mean the person trying to subvert the Constitution might well be seen as treasonous rather than the one speaking out.

It is amazing how quickly being proud of OUR constitutional rights and taking advantage of them became potentially treasonous when a president began defending his own questionable actions. It begins to get kinda scary. The smoke screens and cover-ups. All in the name of patriotism.
I remember a bumper sticker I once saw. "I love my country, its the morons running it that worry me..." or something along that line.
Fortunately we watch alot of history, national geographic, etc.........our country has survived worse and other incompetent presidents. Hopefully that will continue to hold true.

Thanks Irish and yes it's funny when it happens. I tell'em to turn off their MTV heads.
Here is hoping that we get through all this mess somehow and that guy heads back to Texas. He is looking more and more like Alfred E. Newmen as time goes on.

With actions come consequences. I don't dispute their right to voice their opinions, nor do I dispute the right of the public to burn the CD't they bought in protest, or to call radio stations and voice their own opinions as to the music they don't wish to hear.  [and WayWardSoul made an honest and very important point, the books, etc. the Nazi's burned were removed forcefully from the homes of the owners and burned...the CD's were burned by people who owned them...a big difference]

But of course, why would someone object to someone that shares their narrow point of view then hides behind an american flag.

After reading every post in this thread, it appears that the majority of people, no matter which side the may stand on, appear hypocritical.  In my opinion, it all boils down to consequences for actions.  If you don't think you might like the consequences for the actions you take, reconsider your actions.  There may have been a better way for Jody to have done what she did.

I don't care what people say, they have a right to their opinion and to express it.  I also have the same rights, and if I choose to burn someone's CD's or not listen to a radio station who plays their music, that is my right.  I will choose whom I support and who I don't, and to those I don't...tough cookies.

(oh, and if anyone chooses to block me, please let me know so I can talk about you behind your back!)  lol...it was a JOKE!

I tossed my DC cd's.  I believe everyone is entitled to their opinion but I think that people of celebrity often take their celebrity too far and abuse it.  Natalie Maines did just that and lost any respect I personally had for her.

I don't think music stars, movie stars, tv stars have any better opinions on the world and politics than the rest of us do.  I believe it is wrong for them to use their celebrity as a platform to push their personal beliefs and agendas on the rest of us.  I'm not gullible enough to fall for it, but there are many people that are, just because they've seen such and such in a movie or on tv.

I don't think celebrities should be allowed to make their voices louder than mine, as I have just as many beliefs, ideas and opinions about politics and the world at large as they do.  I just don't have the availability of a stage and a microphone.

I avoid the movies, music, etc., of celebrities who have political agendas they present in public.

I don't really care what Natalie Maines thinks of George Bush.  What I do care about is that she maligned the President (it could have been Kerry, or Ronald McDonald, it wouldn't have mattered), on foreign soil in a very public way.

This is the type of thing that makes our country weaker, not stronger.  It makes us appear weak to the very people who wish to do us harm.  Thanks for opening that door a little wider, Natalie, ya idiot.

So celebreties do not have any freedom of speech?
Lets just stop them supporting charities and lending their support to aid agencies then.  That will put an end to it all.

In a recent article, Bill Riley referred to what he called "The Civil Rights Gang."  Just why does it make me nervous when "civil rights" has become a pejorative.

AFTER I had to run and look up pejorative......thank you for teaching me a new word...........that is a very troubling thought I agree.
