:) Just taking a break from the forums, guys.

Allow me to attempt to clear a few things up.

1. The purpose of this thread had very little to do with me saying "why doesn't the general population of CM find online BDSM real." If it were, that would be the name of the thread. Rather, it was my interest to see how views of BDSM differed, and what people's personal hierarchies were. The topic shifted to exclusively online vs. in person-- which is fine, it's an interesting conversation in and of itself, but wasn't my original intention.

2. I do carry on BDSM relationships offline and in person. However, there's a sort of a filter-- if I meet a person exclusively for the purpose of BDSM online, I do not engage with that person offline. However, there are people that I've met in person that I carry BDSM relationships with both on and offline. I am currently involved in two in person BDSM relationships, though I'll occasionally incorporate online acts. It's never wise to assume.

3. Most of the arguments against online BDSM seem to boil down to "well, it makes a poor substitute for kink in person." I would agree with that. However, my argument is that if you view it as not a substitute but a different kind of experience, why shouldn't it be an equally valid form of BDSM? You don't hit someone with handcuffs when they wanted a crop-- handcuffs make a pretty lousy substitute for that specific purpose.

I'm glad so many people have participated in this discussion, and hope that it continues-- as it goes on, it seems to me that more points of view are crawling out of the woodwork, making for some very interesting dialogue.

That is, seen as 'real' bdsm-- to pull the dictionary definition, existing as a thing or occurring in fact; genuine, not imitation or artificial. (As opposed to real being short for 'real life.')

That's an argument that will eventually disappear once technology improves, and it's no longer possible to distinguish cyber sex from the real thing. It's like the abortion debate. Within 25 years, maybe sooner, it will be possible to bring a zygote to term completely outside a human body. Then life really will begin at conception, regardless of anyone's political or religious beliefs. So as far as I'm concerned, the only logical and ethical position to hold is: "Abortion is murder, and it should be free of charge and readily available." (This is also known as the Everyone Line Up to Hate RedMagic Position.)

Same thing here. Not everyone is going to validate you, but, over the course of time, cyber anything, including BDSM, will become harder and harder to distinguish from the real thing, for anyone's definition of real.

Yeah. They aren't any kind of substitute for the real deal though. But fifty, one hundred years out, just think. You and your partner put on motion capture suits (like Gollum in the Lord of the Rings) and do the nasty in multiple ways. Then, when you're alone, you can enter some kind of suit, or goo chamber, where you have a physical interaction with a 3D image of your partner. Or soldier and spouse are both in goo chambers, thousands of miles apart, and they make each other come anyway.

Still not as good as the real thing. But there will be people who like it better, much as there are people today who choose to do porn or romance novels instead of real relationships.
