I'm a big fan of Michael Pollan as well :)

FR

Yah I actually think "Calories In Vs. Calories Out" is basically a nice way of reminding all the fatties they are fat and should be ashamed of themselves.

Basically- its not constructive advice- its a dig. Everyone knows it.

I could say more- but without proof of what I do for work outs and how much I agonize over what I eat...I'm pretty sure everyone would say I were exaggerating and just trying to be a special snowflake.

But I dread meals.
I dread making the wrong choice because I don't have strong enough will power.
I hate waking up in the morning and seeing the scale stay the same, despite the 700 calories I burned the night before.
I rarely buy clothes anymore because its too depressing.
I look in the mirror and hate myself so much that it tears me up inside.

but say calories in vs. calories out to me one more time- maybe this time I'll get it and just you know...do it. Cause obviously I must just love making excuses since I'm so happy and all. I mean and clearly- I just love having a goiter the size of a golfball because I can fail at weight loss and just blame that right? [8|]

Fuck it, seriously... When my thyroid started malfunctioning I was a teenager, skiing team, swimming team, working out like mad, all of a sudden it went BANG and from rail thin stick I went to rounded and gently padded, too big for ballet, accused of sneak eating, being undisciplined, I ended up bulimic for a while, I was so freaking relieved when finally a doc thought there was something wrong with me and my neck and checked thyroid issues.

People who just stuff their faces and don't get off their butts, little sympathy for them, but somebody having a genuine problem and some asshat goes with "Eat less, work out more, it's simple", I want them to have a thyroid disorder just for a few months and see how they cope with those comments.

Interesting. It may even be sort of possible. Men sometimes wear prosthetic pregnancy weights to see vaguely what it's like; some people have worn fat suits for a similar purpose (I recall Jamie Oliver giving it a try). Deliberately disrupting the bodily systems, though . . . maybe there's a way of doing that safely.

Me, I don't chime in much with exercise or diet threads. My weight has never varied by more than eight pounds either way. It's a different world.

WHAT?
My weight varies that much like the day I get my period each month.

I am so envious!

PeonForHer -> RE: tips for losing inches? (3/15/2014 5:42:59 PM)

My sisters are the same. The older of the two - hell, her weight bounces by some twenty pounds, every few months. She used to be skinny, then became chubby, then became muscular (took up karate, with a vengeance - 2nd Dan now and we're all very proud of her). But, women's weights are bound to vary more, surely? The menstrual cycle is so much about fluids, isn't it?

shiftyw -> RE: tips for losing inches? (3/15/2014 6:07:48 PM)

Indeed. indeed.

I had 3 rounds of steroid shots last year for a back injury (caused by a car accident)- one landed on "shark week" and it was so brutal- seemingly overnight none of my clothes fit (I mean and that's not to mention the crazy confused hormones/drugs that made me into the she hulk "SHIFTY SMASH!").

eta- spelling (I suck recently...)

PeonForHer -> RE: tips for losing inches? (3/15/2014 6:13:35 PM)

That would utterly throw me. Did the steroids make you retain a lot of water?

My time of putting on weight is over Christmas - no great surprise. And if I lose a lot, it'll be because of ultra-stress and anxiety. My appetite just vanishes. It's nasty - I have to force myself to eat and even then I can only manage soup and cereals.

Mine used to be like that before moving to the US. Within 6 months of moving I started gaining weight, for an eventual gain of almost 50lbs over 3 years. I kept gaining until I cut corn syrup completely out of my diet (including stuff like certain spice rub mixes with corn syrup solids and so on). Now I'm having a hell of a time getting the weight off again, because my body type is of the kind where I don't gain or loose weight easily, regardless of what I eat. My body seems to want to be the weight it is, period and when I was 135lbs that was 135 no matter what I ate (except for corn syrup apparently).

shiftyw -> RE: tips for losing inches? (3/15/2014 6:24:39 PM)

So much water retention.
And they increased my appetite. I was just constantly hungry and bloated. Fortunately- my very exceedingly patient man realized quickly that I needed distractions and lots of "are you sure you're hungry??"
They wanted to do another round on my hip- but I told them I'd much rather extend my physical therapy and get a TENS unit for home use. So far, whenever my hip or back for that matter, act up too much, some exercises and zapping seem to help.

High fructose corn syrup?

Yup.

Now, I have no idea if it's the HFCS that causes the weight gain, or if it's because that stuff is in EVERYTHING in the US, where as the sugars used in Europe have a much more limited scope of products they're put in. What I do know though, is that my entire life I've been one of those annoying people who can eat anything they want, not exercise, and yet retain a 'skinny bitch' body type -including quite a bit of muscle- UNTIL I moved to the US.
I also found that I didn't stop the weight gaining until I cut out HFCS, and thereby most processed foods (although I ate tons of processed foods in Europe and did not gaining weight there), and didn't start actually being able to loose weight until I went paleo.

ExiledTyrant -> RE: tips for losing inches? (3/15/2014 7:09:54 PM)

I suspect the the HFCS bonds with fat on a molecular level making it very hard to burn off. Just a theory, and I'm not currently among my geeks to confirm this.

Shifty, wow!

I'm so sorry you feel that way. You are one of my favorite young posters here. And I lovthe new picture.

Thyroid problems suck! Even though I should be more concerned about my weight, the sweating from thyroid issues is my biggest issue.

I have no answers for you, I'm sorry. But I did want to offer a big cyber hug and tell you I think you are beautiful, inside and out. Maybe write that on your mirror so that's what you see first when you look.

My man and I are both working towards losing 30 pounds. I know it's going to be a hellova lot easier for him - he drinks soda and eats fast food when he's not with me. He can make some simple, easy changes, and presto.

It will be a lot more work for me. But whenever I track my food scrupulously with myfitnesspal, it's very clear - eat less than 2000 calories and 68 grams of fat per day = lose weight. (That's my number, others will have a different number, but the poster who believe she can't lose weight at 300 calories per day is challenging the laws of physics.)

I realize that some people will be more challenged than I, which is why I mentioned outliers and included a link to Eat, Move, Sleep, the author of which has the genetic deck stacked against him and would have been dead already if he wasn't super conscious about every food and lifestyle decision he makes.

LadyConstanze -> RE: tips for losing inches? (3/16/2014 9:21:26 AM)

But if you look at Shifty, if she's getting steroids and cortisone for back pain, that is basically messing with her metabolism and thyroid, making it much much harder due to the water retention...

The 300 calories are a bit off, but when my friend was having the transplant, I had a lot of talks with the nutrionist from the Sinai Cedars, he said he has an extreme case where the person actually fucked up her metabolism with diets so much, that even with moderate exercise she can't lose weight at 800 calories a day, her only way to lose weight is to increase exercise but even then it will be much slower. It came up when my friend had to lose weight, but they said anything less than 500 calories under your normal intake will send your body into starvation mode and will cause it to burn as little as possible and squeeze out as much energy of everything you eat.

In my book all those fancy crash diets are possibly as much the reason for people being overweight than overeating. The diet industry is not interested in solving weight problems, the more people who gain weight after diets, the more customers they have.

Which makes "calories in-calories out" insensitive as hell, maybe not intentional, but still there.

Jus sayin

FR: All kinds of things can shift our metabolisms.
Women can develop PCOS which features insulin resistance.
Insulin resistance can cause weight gain for a variety of reasons.

It isn't always calories in vs calories out.
For the first 23+ years of my life I was thin.
I was not physically active.
I could eat anything and was able to eat a lot of it.

Then in 1985 I had knee surgery.
After surgery I gained weight.
It may have been from being not active to becoming inactive that did it.
It might have also been that I was put on a powerful broad-spectrum antibiotic for the first time in my life.
After the first couple of doses, within 12 hours of the first dose, I had a rip-roaring yeast infection going.
Thin people have very different intestinal flora than heavier people.

And this doesn't even go into the differences in brain activity.

There isn't just one solution because it isn't a one-size-fits-all issue.

A few years ago I was given the drug Topamax for migraine prevention.
A common side effect is weight loss, and I lost over 30 lbs without effort.
I did eat less, but not in corresponding amounts.
Weight just slipped off me in the course of a year, to the point where I was no longer diabetic... and then it stopped working.

shiftyw -> RE: tips for losing inches? (3/16/2014 1:46:10 PM)

Aw thanks guys. That was a bit of a meltdown, admittedly.

To me "calories in vs calories out" only serves to frustrate someone further. It makes the person asking for help seem like they "should be seeing more results". I also think, beyond physical aliments- there are mental and emotional factors that shouldn't be swept to the side either. I mean the correlation of stress and weight gain has been well documented. It just isn't that simple. It makes it sound like it isn't ok to struggle with weight loss, because its so easy. And it IS ok to struggle.

While I think it is a core concept of weight loss- its an oversimplification of what is going on, IMO.

LL- <3 Thank you! I'm blessed to be surrounded by people who see me as more than that number on the scale, thank you for reminding me of that.

LafayetteLady -> RE: tips for losing inches? (3/16/2014 11:56:18 PM)

Anytime shifty. I kind of figured it was a meltdown, but hey, we all need tohave someone remind us we are more than the scale sometimes. Glad you have good people around you.
