High fructose corn syrup isn't necessarily bad but it has one of the lowest weight gain ratios in existence. What is that? Simply how many pounds of an item you have to eat to gain one pound of body mass. #in/#retained = #fat I actually first got the idea when I was 14 and years later found dietary studies outlining the same thing in humans. I was reading my mother's Weight Watcher's diet plan (the original that was based on science not the current touchy feely market their brand of fast food schpeal) and realized that what the food tables were saying to lose weight was the inverse of what my grandfather's copy of Progressive Farmer was saying to increase weight gain in livestock. I compared Weight Watchers to the weight gain tables in Progressive Farmer and it correlated. Molasses and Corn syrup have the lowest weight gain ratios there are. You put on a pound for every 1.5-2 pounds you consume. Straight cane or beet sugar is 2-2.2. Starchy grains and potatoes were 3-5. yadda yadda. These all correlated to the "forbidden items" and "limited items" on the WW diet plan. Then you came to unlimited items. Celery and Iceberg lettuce have ratios around 200. It literally takes more calories to push through the digestive system than those foods provide. (as long a you aren't topping with high fat dressing) I'd rather have my corn syrup relegated to the occasional sweet treat rather than put in everything especially the over-processed convenience foods. Another thing to consider is whether you are a binge dieter. You know the person. Always going with the diet of the month, etc. Then going back to their comfortable eating habits after losing weight. If you read the fine print, the pattern of starving then satiating is exactly what you do to livestock to ASSURE massive weight gain. Bob Schwartz has a very good take on the psychology of dieting and breaking the fast/binge habit in "Diets Don't Work". http://www.amazon.com/Diets-Dont-Work-Step---Step-ebook/dp/B003F8S7FE/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1395071492&sr=1-2&keywords=diets+don%27t+work As to the assholes that say "you just need some self control" may they too have a massive debilitating condition that prevents them from serious exercise for a year and see how they balloon up a bit. The prejudice and assumptions from the superficial are truly disgusting.
