Good post. The facts show gun ownership makes your household less safe. People, though, prefer "feeling safe," and that's why so many own guns.

Electricity piped into your home makes it less safe. So does using propane or natural gas. Stairs make it less safe. So do fireplaces. All those things are useful when used properly.

What's your point, or are you just emoting your feelings?

No baiting. No 'gotcha' stats, taken out of context. No apples and oranges comparisons. Just simple facts.

Cars are inherently dangerous things. We restrict who can use them, mandate training and testing for those so allowed, constantly update and improve the minimum safety standards, yet tens of thousands of lives are lost to them every year. Many of those deaths are the result of people who have passed all the tests and training still choosing to be stupid and irresponsible.

We have cars, and we use them, because the benefits outweigh the risks.

I was not making a case against guns. I did however point out how dangerous they are in the hands of the incompetent. Clearly the current training and testing is quite inadequate. People don't know what the hell they're doing and they're injuring and killing others unintentionally... and probably all too often the ones they care about the most.

Hard to defend oneself with a fireplace. Now pushing the perp down the stairs, that might have promise.

Do you suppose you spend a lot more time thinking about defending yourself than the average person?

Do you suppose you spend a lot of time pondering whether you are doing everything enough like an average person?

When one is suffering from a combination of paranoid schizophrenia, that which is not there nor in reality...CAN...attack you. Best you have planned how to fight a hydrolisk or a rampaging wookie!

When one is suffering from a combination of paranoid schizophrenia and what? When one cannot even organize one's own thoughts into coherent sentences, one is unlikely to be someone with a coherent picture of reality. Best you have a plan to work on that.

I think how much a person thinks about defending oneself might be dependent on where one lives, whether in an urban area or small town/rural area.

It might also depend on how much of a "target" one might be. Those who look like they might have something valuable might get the notice of a perpetrator more than others who might be more modest and less ostentatious. So, it would depend on how much one has to actually defend.

I have no real enemies, so there's no one on this earth with any desire to kill me. I'm not a belligerent person who goes around starting arguments or picking fights, so that's another way of avoiding situations where one has to think more about defending oneself. Of course, if I go to a fast-food place, shopping mall, or movie theater, I might think about it a bit more. My mother always insisted on sitting in the very back row of movie theaters, just in case there was an earthquake, but given the recent cases of movie theater shootings, it might not be a bad idea for that reason too.

Do you suppose you spend a lot more time thinking about how to stop me from defending myself? You are rather passionate about it, aren't you?

I asked for you to self assess whether you were abnormally fearful and got this back as a response, which I consider a very clear answer.

I'd like to suggest that filling this out might help give perspective on how reasonable your fears are: http://www.paranoidthoughts.com/assess.php
