Fear is anticipation. The second you know what the first scratch is the fear of future scratches dissipates. The pain of the first hard stroke from a strap lets you know it is only going to get worse. Fear of consequence can create heighten anxiety without leaving a mark.

Safe knife play it theatrics. Being helplessly tied and watching someone heat a knife blade and calmly telling you they are going to burn your eye lids off. That’s scary shit.
