NBA commissioner Adam Silver announced Tuesday that an NBA investigation concluded that the racist remarks made on a recording obtained by TMZ were made by Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling.

Silver banned Sterling for life from any association from the Clippers organization or the NBA. He is not allowed to attend any games or practice, or be involved in any business relating to the running of the team. Sterling is also fined $2.5 million dollars, the maximum amount allowed by the NBA.

Current and former NBA players and personalities from across the league flooded Twitter with their reactions.

I just can't understand why this guy even bought an NBA team in the first place. This isn't the first time some screwball sports team owner gets into this kind of controversy. I don't think too highly of the professional sports industry in general, and I think they take advantage of the fact that fans are just so devoted to their teams that they'll overlook a lot of sins. But not this time, apparently.

Why are conservatives so eager to paint sterling as a democrat?

I cannot understand the legality of the ban.
If I make statements at which Mr Silver takes umbrage, can I too be "banned for life" from attending certain public events?
How?

cuz he bought it for a song! it was a good deal (I think most of it was simply taking over an existing loan so not much money out on his part) and no matter how much of a vocal douchbag the guy is, it makes him money, its a no-brainer..

These idiots running the NBA tho, this has gone on since scumbag Sterling bought the team.. they have seen fit to ignore it all until now.. so they are as bad as he is, imo..

They could ban you too.....if they wanted to......It`s a free country.....for now anyway.

And it isn`t a public event.....

Did you finish high school?

It's a franchise, subject to the rules and governance of the organization.

For starters, it's not good for ticket sales, at his club or any other if they didn't take action.

Maybe you've heard of contracts?

And NBA games are not public events they are private and the NBA could ban anyone they want. I know they have banned season ticket holders for making bigoted comments in the past.

I think the loons believe folks HAVE to put up with bigots ......

Not so.....

kdsub -> RE: Banned for life from the NBA (4/29/2014 7:15:56 PM)

We all have to live with our mistakes...but...I think a private phone conversation is a little thin to ban someone for life. I will admit in anger I have said some things in private that I would not say in public. Most of those things are because of my anger and I don't really mean them.

From what I have heard he has not been in trouble before and I think a suspension of next year would have been sufficient. If his players wanted to be traded or not play for him... will... that is the price he would pay as well as the decrease in attendance. In the end I believe he would have sold his interest if nothing else from a business standpoint.

I wonder how many racial slurs or issued on the playing floor ... certainly in football... are they also going to be banned for life?..Yea right.

Butch

OwnerFiftyNine -> RE: Banned for life from the NBA (4/29/2014 7:18:09 PM)

This on it`s own wouldn`t have gotten him uninvited.

There`s a long history.

Good point though.

What do you consider "in trouble"?.. its not a mistake on his part tho, his racism and sexism is very well documented, he has paid out multi-millions in lawsuits he lost.. he heckled and harassed his own players during games.. every coach has had to sue him to get paid.. Really, he is a pretty disgusting person.. When I lived in CA I saw his "charity" ads so I did a little research on the guy.. he is a shrewd businessman tho, incredibly cutthroat.. with Sterling Plaza he negotiated a contract for the whole building to pay the owner a small fee & 15% of any rental income, but then never rented any of the rest of the building out, he is the only tenant.. basically one pretty nasty squeeze play.. The owner cant sell the building to anyone but him (who would buy with a lease like that?) and they cant make any income on it as he keeps it empty..

"As a tenant, Sterling is just as cunning. He doesn't own the land on which Sterling Plaza stands; rather, he has a 99-year lease with the Mayer estate that requires him to pay a relatively small annual fee and 15% of any rental income. But he won't rent to anyone. With no other tenant, the Mayer estate faces another 75 years with virtually no income from its Sterling Plaza property. By sitting and waiting, Sterling may force a fire sale."

DaNewAgeViking -> RE: Banned for life from the NBA (4/29/2014 11:50:05 PM)

Keeping in mind how virulent and widespread bigotry is these days, it seems essential that open displays of such by anyone should result in serious pain. Whatever merits this particular case may have, the fellow is a douchebag and needs to hurt for the public good.

ThatDaveGuy69 -> RE: Banned for life from the NBA (4/30/2014 12:17:33 AM)

A few points worth mentioning:
Before you go and shed a tear for Donald Sterling keep in mind that the team is now worth something north of $550 million. Not a bad $12 million investment. He will very likely be told (by the NBA) that he must sell. That's not a bad payday, even for a billionaire.

I would love to know what Mrs. Sterling thinks of all this. The conversation that caused this was with her husband's "girlfriend". I suspect she will file for divorce minute the sale of the team is complete.

There is a huge difference between players using racial slurs and the owner running the organization like a plantation. The owner is in the ultimate position of authority over the players - he can literally decide their fate in the Game.

I think we can thank (not blame) the election of a black man as president for much of the bigotry we've seen of late. If Obama were just another white guy the GOP would not have attacked him the way they have. Of course they have, for the most part, been smart enough to use the officially approved code words when discussing blacks. But their open and complete hatred at the thought of a black president has made it OK in some circles to express bigotry and racism in a way we haven't seen since the 70's. As disgusting as it is, maybe it is a good thing people like Sterling, Dean, Nugent, Palin, Bundy, and a host of others are outing themselves so the rest of us can marginalize them.

DaddySatyr -> RE: Banned for life from the NBA (4/30/2014 12:40:25 AM)

He won't get half of that.

No decent business person (including the one that set this all in motion) is going to offer full value to begin with but then, knowing that the owner has to sell, there's no fucking way the offers will be reasonable.

Mark my words: This team will sell for less than 80% of your $550,000,000 figure.

Yeah....I heard the lunatic fringe is pushing a story that the bigot was being set up by some mysterious basket ball team buyer......[8|]

Thanks for the confirming how many suckers are born per minute......[;)]

How much did he pay for it?How much will he be able to sell it for? Make sure you are sitting down when you do the math.

I heard they were in the playoffs? Doesn't that kinda add to rather than detract from the selling price???no matter whether you win or loose the playoffs?

chatterbox24 -> RE: Banned for life from the NBA (4/30/2014 7:14:17 AM)

That is ridiculous. A private heated conversation with a GF and he is banned for life?

SO if a black player calls a white player a cracker, will they be thrown off the team?

I am starting to think being white is the minority. I got mad at my husband one time and called him a nigger, and he is irish and white. lol. People can say a lot of things when they are upset, in fact things they don't even mean. blah.

He's had plenty of time to apologize for it. Why hasn't he?

At this point, his apologizing would be seen as being non-sincere and all about making a profit.

Yeah, but there are other ways of making money. If his principles dictate that he doesn't want his family or friends associating with black people, he sure picked a strange business to get into.

I think he's said that he's not going to sell the team, but the NBA may not give him any choice. There may be a forced sale.
