Hello? Anyone in there?

Of course it's lunacy. But to pretend it doesn't exist in America, that it isn't being promoted (thankfully not all that successfully), is putting your head in the sand.

But then, your total war preference is not far removed, is it.

Au contraire

Total war is the antidote to endless war

Musicmystery -> RE: Bergdahl (6/1/2014 2:48:58 PM)

In the movies.

We already did the war to end all wars.

truckinslave -> RE: Bergdahl (6/1/2014 2:51:16 PM)

There are differences between endless, permanently ended, and sporadic.
There will be wars so long as there are people.
But no single one has to be endless

Zonie63 -> RE: Bergdahl (6/1/2014 3:54:50 PM)

The best way to end war in the Middle East is for the United States to pull out completely. Let them fight it out, and we have no obligation to intercede, intervene, mediate, or negotiate with anyone - neither the "terrorists" nor our so-called "allies" in the region. Pull out completely, from Morocco to Indonesia - no embassies, no telephone calls, no business relationships - no contact at all.

Then, all we have to do is kick back and wait a few years, see who's left standing.

Musicmystery -> RE: Bergdahl (6/1/2014 3:58:34 PM)

There is the small matter of having interests in the area.

There might be sacrifices to make.

TheHeretic -> RE: Bergdahl (6/1/2014 4:12:06 PM)

Coming back around to Bergdahl, let's pull out the old tinfoil hat for a minute. What the hell, right?

The question that is going to be asked is, was Sgt. Bergdahl a volunteer for his capture and use as a negotiating tool. I find it really interesting that the news reports say he hasn't spoken to his parents yet.

Here it is in a nutshell:

0bama0, in total disobedience of the law, in complete defiance of decades of strategy requiring that we not negotiate with terrorists, has traded 5 terrorist leaders for our lone defector in the Afghan war. His father Bob (who recently deleted a tweet reading" I am still working to free all Guantanamo prisoners. God will repay for the death of every Afghan child, ameen"), speaking at the press conference at which 0bama0 announced his treason, quoted the Koran in Arabic: “Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim” —which means “In the name of Allah, most Gracious, most Compassionate.”

Only a fool can doubt that the enemy is not just inside the wire but inside the White House.

Lmfao.... I stopped reading your bullshit at "terrorist leaders"

The Algerians, the South Africans, Arafat- all of them had rather modest goals when compared to those of the Islamists.

Hitler had modest goals compared to them.....

Yes brains, the holocaust was modest. [8|]

I'm no fan of this administration, but I'm not going to attack this.

I may have spoken too soon. It seems the administration decided to ignore a specific law about telling Congress in advance of a Gitmo release. I dunno, maybe they'll get new talking points, and Rice will deny they did that, after she admitted it. That sort of thing can get to be a thing.

--FR--

Bergdahl was taken prisoner during an armed conflict in which we (the USA) invaded a foreign country. He wasn't kidnapped. He was a POW. POW exchanges are simply a fact of life during and after wars and armed conflicts.

So why are there some that want to cry, whine, and pout that the US "negotiated with terrorists"?

I think the answer is that since Obama is CIC, there are certain factions of the rabid Right that will look for any excuse possible to lay blame at Obama's feet for anything and everything from cold sores to super novas in galaxies far, far, away.

I don't know if Bowe deserted. For that claim to stand it would have to be shown that he had no intention of returning to base. AWOL? Maybe...maybe not. Either way, I don't think he wanted or intended to be held captive by the Taliban, and to negotiate his return in a prisoner exchange is nothing more and nothing less than has happened in VietNam, Korea, WWII, WWI, and on and on and on.

As to whether he is guilty of anything, I'm willing to wait and see. I'm just glad he is back in US hands.

Well of course there are certain factions of the rabid faction that will come up with all sorts of bizarre shit. What we also have is a media full of Obamabots who will seek out the dumbest argument in that mix, and act like that's the center of the discussion, and position of the entire right.

Kirata -> RE: Bergdahl (6/1/2014 9:35:09 PM)

~ FR ~

Bowe Bergdahl, U.S. soldier held by Taliban, was "ashamed to be American"

Bowe Bergdahl told his parents he was "ashamed to even be American" and was disgusted with the U.S. mission in Afghanistan and with the Army, according to emails quoted in Rolling Stone magazine... The military has never detailed circumstances of his disappearance or capture

Fellow soldiers call Bowe Bergdahl a deserter, not a hero

The sense of pride expressed by officials of the Obama administration at the release of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is not shared by many of those who served with him -- veterans and soldiers who call him a deserter whose "selfish act" ended up costing the lives of better men.

The dogma of "no negotiations with terrorists" is being repeated endlessly. But has it been adhered to ....ever? Take a glance at modern history and you will see example after example of this dogma being ignored and Western Govts negotiating with 'terrorists'. The UK negotiated with the IRA, Israel negotiates indirectly with Hamas, white South Africans negotiated with the ANC, the US recognises terrorists in Iran .... the list goes on and on.

Even worse, Western Govts have no problem about financing and arming terrorist groups when it suits their interests. The US did it with the Contras, with OBL and other Islamists in Soviet-occupied Afghanistan, with numerous extreme Right wing thugs in South and Central America, the Brits did it with the UDA, UVF and others in Ireland. Again the list goes on and on ..... Who are the Govts of the West to decide who's a terrorist and who's isn't?

Implicit in this approach of not talking is that the only way of dealing with terrorism is to inflict a total military victory over it. Yet the notion of inflicting total military victory is dismissed by just about every military analyst of note, who insist that only a political solution will end terrorism. While the counter-insurgency strategies they propose will include a military component, they recognise that sooner or later if one wishes to end terrorist violence then the terrorists and their support base must be brought into the political process at one stage or another. To put it simply, shooting doesn't stop until talking starts.

Solutions don't happen until all parties agree to them.

There's are a lot of things going on here but frankly, I'd like the Pentagon to tell me if this man deserted his post in a war zone or went AWOL.

The American people do have a right to know.

mnottertail -> RE: Bergdahl (6/2/2014 1:28:01 PM)

They don't know exactly, they are working on that.

You do understand that Bergdahl is likely the only one who can answer that question, right?
