WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:
Declare the Chapel Hill shooting of 3 innocent Muslim- American students a Terrorist Attack
On February 10, 2015 Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, his wife, Yusor Mohammad, 21, and her sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19 were killed execution style by Craig Stephen Hicks, 46.

Craig Hicks' facebook is polluted with anti-islamic posts. We want to this man to be known as a terrorist who killed 3 innocent Americans in cold blood. He obviously prepared for this and was politically driven to kill noncombatants.

This is in every way a terrorist attack. Had the gunman been a bearded brown muslim looking guy who killed 3 nonmuslims, the whole world will declare it a terrorist attack, even muslims themselves.

We ask that you treat every similar attack with the right standard. Muslims condemned the paris attacks and called it terrorism, please do the same with this attack!

Hicks = Terrorist

Naming a city after the Buffalo would be honoring the foundation of Indian society.

yes, that's the very argument at the heart of one side in the mascot "controversy"

Personally if they are going to ban names that anyone at all finds an excuse to be offended by I want them to ban the team name Yankees. Many people use that as an insult, and everyone knows it starts with a D

BamaD -> RE: More Racism.... (3/7/2015 11:14:12 AM)

Illinois is named after an Indian tribe.
Mississippi is an Indian word.
The Dakotas .......
Where would it end.

there's a fantastic paul Harvey "rest of the story" story about where the terms "Yankees" came from. its fascinating and maybe I can find it...

and yes, same here; im from new York and there are dozens and dozens of Iroquois indian names all over the state...

I don't agree. Amongst a very small but nonetheless important group of highly educated and liberal-minded and right-on people here in Europe, 'Yankees' is considered a compliment. In fact, these people bravely defend the term 'Americans' in the same vein.

I don't think its so much they are saying that settlers in ny decimated herds, or that the city here was named after local herds, but rather, that the name itself conjurs up imagery of the indian genocide and buffalo decimations that occurred elsewhere.

The origin of the name "Buffalo," remains a matter of debate. This in no way changes the fact that all the blather about Native American names being racist (are the French names scattered throughout Wester New York racist?) in no way changes the fact that the name of the Washington D.C. football team is racist as is its use by any other team (including the one in Lancaster). It is an obvious false equivalency. It is nothing more that a pathetic attempt to by some to justify their own racism by projecting it onto others.

It's the State of Washington, not Washington, D.C. And at a time when the team's helmets had only the letter "R" on them, it was Walter "Blackie" Wetzel, a Chief of the Blackfeet Nation and former president of the National Congress of American Indians, who first proposed the idea of having "a real Indian" for a logo and who provided the artwork that resulted in the current design.

Add to that, Ben Shelly, president of the Navajo Nation, has shared team-owner Dan Snyder's box at games wearing a team hat. And Chippewa Cree tribal chairman Rick Morsette has stated publicly, "I have no problem with the name." So rather obviously, not all Native Americans agree with you in finding the word offensive. And according to Public Policy Polling, 71% of Americans don't think it should be changed. But here's something offensive...
The Whites, by law of conquest, by justice of civilization, are masters of the American continent, and the best safety of the frontier settlements will be secured by the total annihilation of the few remaining Indians... Why not annihilation? Their glory has fled, their spirit broken, their manhood effaced; it’s better that they should die than live the miserable wretches that they are... wipe these untamed and untamable creatures from the face of the earth.
In case you don't recognize that passage, it was penned by L. Frank Baum, who campaigned for genocide against the American Indian. Nasty stuff, you may say, but the Oneida Nation, the group that stirred up this whole kerfuffle, is paying homage to Baum's work by naming their casino, "The Yellow Brick Road".

Ernestine Chasing Hawk, descendant of a Wounded Knee survivor, is not pleased. “How can they be so ignorant of history and traitors to their own race?” she asks in the Native American Times. “Would the Jews build a casino to honor Hitler?” But Oneida honcho Ray Halbritter defends the choice, noting that Baum's story has immense commercial appeal. What a hoot! Money and publicity, the favorite whores of the perpetually offended.

"... the perpetually offended"

Gawd save me from those sorts. The Americans who are forever getting pissed off - or pretending to be pissed off - because they're so hypersensitive about this or that European looking down on them.

Well if they're just pretending, then you can't really call them "hypersensitive". And if you don't even really know, maybe you're just being a tad too hypersensitive to people getting pissed at you for acting like a jerk.

I will regret this.

You started this thread as a snit against those who oppose the racist name of the NFL team located in Washington D.C. You can pretend otherwise but I see through you and will not play along.

Everything else is just more of false equivalency and diversion.

Much as your illness evokes my sympathy, you accrue no advantage by parading it in public. Next time you discover that mommy isn't looking, be a good fellow and stay in the basement anyway.

You missed the point, it was a joke. Remember there are many who find the use of Indian names anything but insulting. For example, the Seminole tribe defended Fl States name. But if anyone anywhere considers it offensive it must be banned eventually we will find that everyone is offended by something.

This is where I like to post the Stephen Fry quote/meme. For those that don't know: Mr. Fry is an extremely talented, funny, gay man.
