Lucy, football in Germany tends to attract tons of violence, here are just a few soundbites

I only did a quick google with the German words for violence and football, it has gotten a lot better but it's still pretty grim. When I lived there I loved ice-hockey, violent game but so much less violence happening outside the play field

I dont have experience of travelling outside of france, portugal, belgium and spain, in europe. but with soccer fans...especially back in the 70s and early 80s, the brit soccer fans had a lousy rep at home and abroad. Of course the vast majority were there for the game, but the drunk trouble makers didnt give a shit who they affected or how..
Oh and I have been guilty of being a drunk soccer fan once or twice..

I happened to be in Manchester England during a local football game, Manchester United versus Birmingham. After the game there was a complete police escort walking the team and fans for Birmingham back to the train station. We are talking police in riot gear, guard dogs on chains, streets blocked off, sirens. I was shocked at how violent just getting the opponent out of the city was.

Never really liked it because it really became such a problem in Germany, people didn't seem to go there to enjoy a game but to pick fights, for a while it was a lot of booze and then they added drugs to the mix and more and more neo nazis went to the games. I looked around if I could find some English links, the International Business Times had a super interesting link about how crystal meth is dealt at football games and neo nazis

police is usually abundant in the stadium - then divided in half to get the team supporter groups separated and the guest team followers to bus and train stations

after that
women are groped - yes sure
.. when within reach, out of direct sight, in the crowd

it has (at least here) not much to do with working class ethics or manners, but with alcohol levels and hooliganism traditions - and there are some team followers more infamous than others

And none of this has anything to do with groping women.

From personal experience, I can tell you that some things went on that weren't nice by anyone's standards.

As said, I've seen someone stabbed in the neck at football.

I've seen people dragged out of cars and kicked upside down.

Besides people being sparked clean out.

I've seen people glassed and banged over the heed with pool cues and hammers.

But in the thousands of matches I've attended up and down the country, never, ever has a woman being groped or even been a figure of any interest whatsoever. People intent on violence have other things on their mind - more immediate concerns than women. This whole groping women thing is bollocks.

There tended to be a lot of police at the train stations, but the fans were in large groups and trying to wiggle through them on the way to the right train was always quite unpleasant.

I think it's a certain type of person who gets drunk and violent at games, little to do with background or job, unfortunately far too many for my liking and drunk guys in large numbers tend to feel more "courageous" or "entitled" and of course they need to show off how "manly" they are, oddly enough football seems to be the sport that attracts the biggest "asshole fraction"

I always consoled myself with the knowledge that train stations are full of pick pockets, and some of those guys might pay with a missing wallet

A fan banned from all games for 3 years (kentonline)
14 arrests at the local club in the football hall of shame 2013 (Daily Mirror)
And it's not only recent times: Fulham fan killed at Gills football match (BBC, March 1998). That event got a mention in the Top 10 Worst Football Riots and even featured on ITV's Meridian News.
Even The Washbag reported continued violence in 2012.

Cars in the local area regularly get keyed, trashed, and extensively damaged.
Women are not safe when there's a game on. Our friend who lives within 300 yards of the stadium won't go anywhere when there's a match on - it's just not safe.

I was in Manchester and there was a game with a Scottish team, I really don't follow football because of the supporters and because players pretending to be mortally wounded when somebody looks at their hair, could have been the Celtics, can't really remember, hubby said the kind of guys only their mother's can love, but the whole inner city was basically cordoned off. It was almost like a war zone, no chance to get to the train station, I ended up just booking into a hotel.

As a kid I loved football, but it just seemed to have turned into something weird. What I really miss in the UK is good ice-hockey, though on occasion there is rugby, which is also great, and oddly enough while quite a bit of booze gets consumed, they tend to keep the aggression on the playing field.

Funny how you talk about 'neo-nazis' because I suppose that suits your politics, but actually while most English hooligans have absolutely no interest in politics, on the continent they do.

The hooligans in Italy, Germany, France etc align themselves with left and right wing politics.

In Germany for instance, St Pauli hooligans are left-wing. So, again, more fantasy from you where you imagine all hooligans in Germany are neo-nazis. They're not.

Also, back in the day, there were plenty of hooligans in England who identified with left-wing politics. Particularly Northern hooligans from clubs such as Man United.

not all hools in Germany are neonazis (and there was no "all" anywhere here)

some are: Borussenfront in Dortmund, Hogida in Cologne and some other NRW cities, Dynamo Dresden "supporters" who got "their" club suspended for a year

and about the groping: thank you for probably not being among those on the "giving" side, but maybe you could accept some news from those on the "receiving" end of those "favours"
