There wasn't mention of drink driving - thats another topic altogether.
But your right, so dont drink and drive.  I won't - do you?

I drink and drive a lot but I haven't had a drink in 23 year

I don't drink alcohol but I don't want to ban it because I don't do it, or because some drunk may get in a car and run over my foot.  The answer, like smoking, is to do what you do responsibly around others, not ban it.

It's like this:  Say there is only one seat in the establishment and it's next to you.... and I have a terrible case of silent flatulance.  I have a right to be there .. but in that condition??? :)

I can't remember the last time I just had that overwhelming urge to just blow my smoke in someone's face...just because.  Not everyone who smokes is rude like that....but I do have the right to smoke without having someone preach and whine about it.  I have to disagree about the asthma being triggered by cigarettes and tend to believe more on the side of allergies and polution in the air.

If you don't like the smoke smell on me, don't be around me and the only person I kiss smokes, so it doesn't offend him.

The key word here is SMOKE.  Smoke is a huge trigger for many asthmatics.  It can be from burning leaves, wood burners, flares, cigarettes, etc.

I remember when I quit smoking how my chest hurt every day, how I coughed every morning, how my throat was sore all the time. I was almost 37 and I was miserable. I was so miserable I quit. Now you may not feel ill from your own cigarettes yet, but they do trigger asthma, and they have 1000s of chemicals in them... and that is the facts

I really just want to toss in a reply to one part of the OP's post.

If you're in a restaurant, and are paying $30-50 for a meal you can have for $10 at home, who is cooking and serving it?  Who is paying your mortgage?

Yeah, it's expensive to eat out, but it always amuses me when people think it's so unreasonable to pay more for a steak at a restaurant than at the grocery store.

As for smoking, I don't, and find it disgusting, but to each their own.

Yours,

benji

Wow..what a serious case of mass happy bullshit. This is a bit out of character for me, but I am going on a rampant rant because I am simply tired of hearing this crap!

For the anti-s who keep stating the term "facts", sorry to say, but your information is just as erroneous and staged as anything else you read. The surgeon general's latest smoke and mirrors (no pun intended) scam has already been unraveled as well. http://www.smokersclubinc.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=3394
http://www.smokersclubinc.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=2327
There is no evidence that second hand smoking does a damned thing except maybe make your clothes smell bad (to you, not me). All of the exaggerated claims, most notably the ones that state that some nasty ass medical condition will happen within minutes of being around a smoker are quite simply, big lies. The biggest liars are in "fact" the antismoking organizations, there is your "fact". In the absence of legitimate information, they simply make up, or exaggerate any medical findings they can find. If you want links, I can provide literally hundreds, just ask. If you always believe what you read, bear in mind that a lot of the information you are reading is brought to you by the same administration that is bringing you the Iraq War, based on the pretence of eliminating the invisible weapons of mass destruction.

I smoke because I want to. I don’t try to quit, because I like to smoke. I won’t try to compare it to any other unhealthy practice…everything is unhealthy in one way or another. I don't say it's healthy or unhealthy. I don’t purposely blow smoke in someone’s face, although I would a few on here to maybe wake them up, but then again I don’t feel pity for anyone to the extent that I will give up my right to do as I please. If you don’t like smoke in a restaurant, don’t go in, but don’t tell me or the restaurant owner that there has to be segregation or banning. If I come upon a restaurant that does not allow smoking, I leave, I will not eat there…it works both ways people, if you don’t like it, exercise your right to turn tail and go somewhere else. My honest attitude is if you want fresh air, go outside. Making the smokers go outside is about as backwards of a gesture as I have ever seen. As for asthma…what a hoot. Most, and I’m really thinking all, the people I have known that have asthma smoke. I find it ludicrous to even suggest that second hand smoke caused it and I don’t know any that are blaming an attack on it. Fix your own genetics, that’s a more likely cause and a lot more plausible than trying to blame it on something else. Even if it's trigger for some, it certainly didn't cause it. Someone else mentioned that genetics is a cause for cancer, which is reasonably correct. If you have a family that has cancer running in it, I don’t know how to politely tell you this, but you can avoid tobacco or anything else you want, all you want, but you are likely going to die of cancer. If you happen to have a clean genetic trail, well then do what you want because your risk is minimal at best. As for its effect on the poor innocent little lungs of the youngins. Perhaps your memories are rusty, but youngins will do things 100 times worse to themselves before reaching adulthood than a wisp of smoke will. I grew up around smokers and have no ill effects and have outlived many a poor soul that I watched have dirt thrown on their casket.

This whole secondhand smoke masquerade is just like religion, it’s a belief, so believe what you want, because there are no facts to back you up either way! By the same token, don’t push your beliefs on me and try to restrict my behavior to conform…cornered even the most passive life form will strike back.
In other words, for the very verbal anti-smokers who are talking bullshit, don’t try to blow smoke up my ass….just kindly blow it out yours (and I bet I won’t suffer any ill effects), because you being all noble and trying to save the world is just pissing a bunch of us off.

I'd just like to say, on this topic.

My grandfather smoked 80 cigarettes a day,  he didn't do a single days exercise in his life, he drank alcohol every day, he ate all the wrong foods and he never visited a doctor his entire life, and he lived to the ripe old age of 41.

My grandfather smoked cigars, chewed tobacco, drank Irish whiskey and lived fine with normal ailments, until when in his 70s he was T-boned and killed by a drunk driver. Can't see how any of his "habits" could have affected that.

Shame many people will do all the healthy things and then look around so confused, right before they die of nothing!

I am not trying to attack anyone...simply pointing out, like many have done, that there are many things that trigger asthma...

The no-smoking campaign is stupid in my opinion....you rally to get us to not smoke in restaurants and such...fine...I don't do that anyway...but don't come on here preaching about how bad it is for us...we already know.

You are entitled to your opinion, but don't knock mine because it differs from yours.

I would like to see anyone with a medical or other science degree say that cigarette smoke, direct or second hand, does not contain significant amounts of carcinogens, agents that damage cilia and cell structure of alveoli, and does not cause bronchial irritation.  The bottom line is that unlike anything else here bandied about such as obesity, alcohol consumption and flatulence, tobacco smoke is a hazardous chemical agent AND freely disperses, ne lingers for hours, in the air, affecting those not choosing to partake in it.  As a vasoconstrictor, tobacco smoke is a contributing factor to stroke and vascular disease.  Children of indoor-smoking households are shown to have decreased lung capacity and a greater incidence of asthma, RTIS and chronic bronchitis, and it is considered a contributing factor to SIDS.  Airline attendants and cocktail servers historically expereinced far greater rates of primary lung cancer, and secondary cancers prior to smoking bans.  While there are people who have shown incredible personal immunity despite exposure to significant amounts of carcinogens, at this point, there is little way to know who has natural immunity - and all indicators seems to show, most of us do not.  No, tobacco smoke is not an instant and sure killer, but it has been known to pose significant health risks for decades.  Denying this is simply idiotic.  I believe smokers have a right to smoke where and when it will not impact the health of others.  We seem to forget one major thing about smoking: it is an additction, and it is in no way necessary for anyone to engage in.  It is not like a contageous cold virus that we can do little to prevent the spread of.  Smoking is vital to no one.  Your (and my former) addiction does not constitute a "right", no more than a cocaine addict has the right to harm others with outbursts of violence, nor more than a heroin addict has the right to steal.  Countless US and International private and public agencies have time and time again proven the negative health effects of tobacco smoke in general and second-hand smoke in specific.  You can quote all the insane ranting websites full of dubious statistics and false arguments you like, but my money is on hard science - science undertaken by countless unrelated parties who have strangely come to the same conclusion:  tobacco smoke is bad for your health.  Period.

Here's an idea, second hand smokers.

Next time you're near a smoker, instead of asking him to go outside, YOU go outside and enjoy the fresh air you're always bitching you wish could have.

My son's asthma attacks when around cigarettes are all in my head.. yeah right.. and I was a smoker at the time and I had to go outside and indulge in heat and cold.. yeah, I just did that to make a point for anti-smokers and make myself uncomfortable for no reason... ok, that is your belief and I doubt all the blue children in the world will change your mind

And btw, in my state we will tell you not to smoke in public and if you do not like it don't come here.. too many people here already.

You seem to be laying the blame for your son's asthma directly at smokers.
