Status: offline 		Shove it, crumpets. Didn't I state that Gary couldn't have the shingles vaccine? That must mean that people should check with their doctors to find out if they can have it. So very sorry, MR PERFECT CRUMPETS....SO SORRY YOU DIDN'T LIKE THE TITLE. However if it got some people to read further then it served its purpose.

To update everyone. Gary has had complications. His hearing is very bad now. Can't wear his dentures as he has lost so much weight they won't stay in his mouth. Yesterday the body tremors were so bad he couldn't walk or feed himself. However, I came home last night after sleeping in a chair at the hospital for 4 nights and called him this morning. He answered the phone (surprise on me) and says he finally is feeling better. I had them remove one of his medications yesterday morning as I thought it might be causing the tremors. Maybe I was right. I'm not always wrong, crumpets. Anyway, Gary has used up another one of the 20 or so lives he must have been given. I am finally optimistic that he will get well.

Status: offline 		Gary is at home now. Our main goal is controlling the pain. There are no really good drugs to control nerve pain. He could continue to have this pain for months, perhaps years. It's a matter of finding a way that makes him as comfortable as possible. The first medication the doctors tried made him dizzy and gave him awful tremors. He couldn't stand or feed himself. Lyrica seems a better choice but he is very drowsy and the pain is still there. Doctors said that drowsiness may wear off after a time. We're also trying lidocaine patches. At least he is home.

Unfortunately any kind of smoking is forbidden. He had a single lung transplant. The transplant is what has made him getting shingles so bad. I do remember a friend talking about marijuana oil. Might have to find out where she got some.

You might ask your doctor if a nerve block would help? It is only temporary. Shots last 24 to 48 hours. Catheter type can be good for up to 60 hours.

Edited to add:
TENS electrical therapy is also a possibility. It works by disrupting the electrical signal from the nerves (known at Gate theory). If the doctor approves it you probably would need to talk with a physical therapist on where to place the electrodes and what type of frequency/intensity setting would be best.

This is your first post to me, and this is also, my first post ever (I believe) to you.

I apologize to you that I took both the title and advice literally. I really did.
I hadn't realized at all that you were seeking emotional support and comfort.

That was my mistake for overlooking the social cues in your title and initial post.
I am not sure exactly how I missed the point so totally, so, I will have to reflect further upon my behavior as to figure out why.

In hind sight, since my value added was only going to be "technical", this thread, which initially piqued my interest by the title alone, was one that I didn't belong in as I'm wholly out of my element despite the alluring subject matter.

Status: offline 		Met a retired pharmacist at the Superbowl party today so I asked about the Shingles vaccine.

He was ambivalent, but, he leaned toward having anyone get the shot who could possibly get it simply to avoid the nasty symptoms of Shingles. He says he knows of a guy who never got over the pain.

Status: offline 		Sorry your husband has shingles and I hope he recovers quickly!!! With no complications.

I just found out I have shingles. Started as what looked like blisters or bug bites on the back of my leg, a cluster of a line of 8-9 areas. Shingles hurt, and tingle and really are uncomfortable. I have a pretty mild case and didn't even think of getting the vaccine I'm under 50. Never crossed my mind.

Status: offline 		Also go to the health food store and get him a probiotic 100 billion called RAW PROBIOTICS. It comes in the refrigerated area of the store. When you get home make sure you keep it in the refrigerator.

Take one first thing in the morning before food and one middle of the afternoon before food. Drink plenty of good water, never from the tap/sink.

This will help him rebuild his immune system.

Ask the health food store folks for a high potency multivitamin in capsule form, don't get the rock hard pills as they never dissolve. If it calls for one a day, take one in the morning and one afternoon.

Get Ester C, 1000 mg capsule form, take 1 in morning, one in afternoon after food. You must get the Ester C version so it won't hurt your stomach.

Drink plenty of water to flush out all the toxins.

If he keeps up this routine for a month and still doesn't feel better, he needs a liver cleanse supplement.

Status: offline 		Oh and another thing...you might want to get Emuaid soap. This way you can bathe/shower with the soap, then put on the Emuaid cream, and then use a clean white tee shirt to put on. Each time you put more cream on, you must first wash the area with the soap, then the cream, then a new fresh clean white cotton shirt, Hanes/fruit of the loom type.

Seems like a lot of work, but worth it.

Status: offline 		We have been to the naturalpath doctor also. We've taken the advice given of what to purchase at the health food store as well as what that doctor could give us. He has also done acupuncture. Some of the things that were suggested were not suitable. Building up an immune system for someone who takes medication to lower his immune system is not going to work. We have looked into more than one way to help him get over all this.
