With over 80% of votes counted, Sadiq Khan seems certain to be elected London's new Lord Mayor.

Khan, a human rights lawyer cum politician of Pakistani heritage, triumphed despite a smear campaign that accused him of "pandering to extremists".

This result is in sharp contrast to Trump's promise to refuse all Muslims entry to the US. It appears that London's voters don't share the paranoia and xenophobia rampant on the US Right and have no problems with electing a Muslim as their Mayor. Those who regard all Muslims as the enemy will have a hard time reconciling this result with their Islamophobia.

Who knows? Perhaps a few of those blinkered people might open their eyes and realise that the vast majority of Muslim loathe the extremists as much as, if not more than, the rest of us.

Sadly, I think the blinkered need more than the evidence of Muslim politicians who've been threatened with a fatwa by fundamentalist asshats over their support for gay rights.

Have to admit, I havent been looking at the mayor race, too much to think about with the BREXIT stuff, and the NHS ignorance. I have ex pat friends in greece and spain/france and italy as well as family in the uk, so Im getting lots of info, and opinions, I dont have an opinion truly, I hated it when we entered in the 70s but that was because my dad was adamant it was a bad idea. but I was only ten, ive learned a lot since.
The NHS bullshit has had most of my attention, but thats because I was part of it.
Unfortunately there is so much racism in the UK lately that I see problems, but yeah....I hope it goes well for him.
It sure as hell shows he has more than "the muslim vote"

I did notice that altho 80 % are reported, the cons are saying its too early to tell:)

One thing Khan has done that was very smart indeed, is he's mostly left his religion out of his electioneering. He's pretty much refused point blank to be drawn on it as much as he can.

Exactly, and not just the cons. He had some trouble back when he was still an MP rather than London's Mayor with a couple of the more reactionary Imans giving him shit (one, iirc, was calling for his excommunication, which I think is an automatic fatwah) over his being in favour of gay rights. Stirring up all that again during an election wouldn't have done him any favours at all, would it?

The problem has been as with all religions, is not everybody who claims to have a faith. It is only the people who actually act on the dogma contained in those publications of faith. I agree with those that tell us that 'faith' will be the downfall of civilization.

This is increasingly the actions in accordance with a dogma of one of those faiths, inspiring some people to actually believe that suicide and murder in the name of the faith, will get you martyred, 72 virgins and paradise.

The depressing thing about that, is that most Islamic scholars (there is a term for this, but I don't recall it offhand) think that the whole 72 virgins and glory in martyrdom line is a load of shit. It's quite notable that these imbeciles who are running off to Syria to join ISIS don't, as a rule, come from particularly religious backgrounds. Neither did the 7/7 bombers. Many feel that their lack of understanding of the Koran is what makes them easy marks for bullshit artists misusing a religion for political gain.

I honestly dont know much about him as I said, I havent read much about it until this week, altho I have an inkling from what I have read.
I havent lived in the UK for nearly three decades. SO im out of the loop on so many things there.

Actually, something you might have missed that's rather fun as far as the UK media goes: supposedly Cameron has stated that he will not apologise to Trump for calling him a deluded fuckwit (or some rather more weasely terms to the same effect) in the event of the butthair combover becoming the American President. Possibly he's hoping that he'll have safely resigned by the time that particular steaming turd hits the fan, and the mess will be somebody else's problem. (It'd be too much to hope for that he's finally realised that Obama loathes Britain, and that this revelation has put him off brown-nosing further American Presidents. He's spent most of the time since 2010 making it very obvious that he's terribly jealous of how far up Bush's arse Blair was allowed to climb, hasn't he?)

I doubt they know who Cameron is, what Oxford is, Eaton, Kings College, any of it, Parliament, UKIP, Tories, Labour (other than they are socialist as are all your parties) Cabbage, Agincourt......and so on, Sussex, Kent, Geordies, roundheads, moonheads, any king who wasnt a Henry (that from Hermans Hermits) Peter Noonan, ad nauseam. I think in that context the "City of London" is the square mile (alleged: it's been spreading like a tumour since the early '80s) full of financiers, tax evaders (trufax: the City is actually an inland offshore tax haven at this point in history), and other scum who need to die, which is why it has its own Lord Mayor, seperate from the Lord Mayor who wears a funny hat and a gold chain in the rest of London.
The only bit of London, in short, that actually matters, whatever the Nathan Barleys swanning about Soho and Camden (I think they've now abandoned Hoxton) might like to believe...
