I think an American winning an event that involves skill with guns is a bit like a Brit winning an event that involves expertise in moaning about the weather. [;)]

Still, well done to her.

Or a Brit winning an event involving the eating of crumpets and the drinking of tea. [;)]

FR
I feel like shooting shouldn't be labelled a sport!
How is it exercise at all?

The US female soccer team seriously needs more support though. They constantly rule the world in female soccer and never gets credit.

How about ballroom dancing?

I'm actually looking forward to the women's gymnastics competition. The U.S.A has been on the up and up for some time. They won gold in London four years ago, and will likely get a podium finish this year.

As an American of Romanian descent though, I have to root for Romania's team.

Romanian gymnasts were always good. I always enjoyed their teams even while rooting for ours.

Three years ago, then-West Springfield High junior Ginny Thrasher was the 45th-best junior air rifle shooter in the U.S. On Saturday morning, the 19-year-old NCAA national champion stepped into the first medal event of the Rio Games — the women’s 10-meter air rifle finals — and did this:

Now she's the best...

Air soft guns? What next, paint ball?

Hell, if I had any idea this was a real sport I might not have bitched at my kid so much when he was putting holes in all the screens.

Swiss and Finnish males should do just as well in shooting events since they're required to train with and own rifles.

The U.S. team is coached by Károlyi's, who were Romanian coaches long ago.

Indeed.

You've inspired me. I've not had cheese on crumpets for far too long. [;)]

Joining the rest of the haters, Peon?

What are you talking about, CD? It pretty much stands to reason to me that a good shooter might well come from the USA. Why would 'hating' come into that - any more than Switzerland might produce a lot of good skiers and that should produce 'hate' in me too?

Perhaps because of your previous denunciations of the U. S. 'gun culture', I detected more sarcasm in your statement than you perhaps meant. If so, I apologize.

No worries.

My Dad was a keen shooter when he was in the police. He had a marksman grade, in fact. It never really appealed to me as a sport, but I can understand why it would for some.

The marathon was first run by a messenger from the Greek army after the battle of Marathon to give the news to the city of Athens. The distance is the same today. The running and jumping events replicate what a military messenger would have to do on the battlefield to communicate between sections of an army in battle. Things like shot put, javelin, discuss are all throwing things to kill an enemy in the field. Equestrian events are all how war horses are trained. The list goes on. The olymimpics is like a day off in the battle during a war that allows the men to get drunk and wrestle or practice war type things amongst themselves to prove who is top warrior. Of course gun type events were bow and arrow, which were spear (javelin) which were just rocks to begin with. Swimming was messengers crossing rivers. The list is historic and endless.

Gotta climb enemy walls. You try and denigrate, but there is a history. It's all pretty martial.

It may not be performance enhancing drugs, they test for illegal drugs as well.

Air rifles and Air soft guns are not the same thing at all. Comercially avaliable have the muzzle energy of a .22.
And according to one poster on here, though he denies it now, and air rifle and a AR-15 are the same technology.

Peon it's funny. I shoot well. I shoot with people who have been world class marksmen. I shoot well enough to belong in that group. Yet, recently a kid I know brought a girlfriend to meet me. As part of the long weekend I taught her how to load her own ammunition and to shoot. The very first "group" she shot with her own loaded ammo in one of my very accurate rifles was a world class group. I have a picture frame on my wall. In the frame are just various shot groups that deserve to be displayed. Her very first group went into that frame.

I find that the hand to eye coordination necessary to shoot little groups is entirely consistent with how the female brain sees the world. In my life of teaching people to shoot, I've found that women's brains do it best and actually enjoy it most. In my mind, I relate it to something like the hand to eye coordination that is required for needle point sewing. When taught properly, women just seem to enjoy it and are damn good at it.

There is certainly a thought process that enjoys that type of thing. I know many dedicated men in that group. But, frankly, I find it is most natural to a female brain to enjoy the sport.

I wasn't denigrating anything.

I happen to think that trampolining can be very athletic, and is in fact used in training for unrelated sports and in acrobatic-related sports as well.

However, since it has only been an Olympic sport since 2000, I doubt that it being martial has anything to do with it.

Okay. I agree and would add synchronized swimming. As an event added later. I agree trampoline is a pretty studly event and have known people, who were studs, that competed in the event at the college level.

I think that some drugs help steady breathing and heart rate, which help in accuracy in shooting. Maybe they are looking for things like that.
