I missed that event. So far, I've seen swimming, beach volleyball, and gymnastics.

I'm not usually a big sports fan, but I'm awed and moved by watching Olympians excel at something they've dedicated themselves to and worked so hard to attain.

The gymnastics actually did make my jaw drop, and even the commentators shut up now and then. That's when you know something's impressive! [:)]

I don't think they showed it.

Has the US gotten any more gold

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Unflappable American teenager Virginia Thrasher won the first gold medal of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Saturday, holding her nerve against two Chinese Olympic champions to clinch the women's 10m air rifle event.

The 19-year-old U.S. college champion edged out China's Du Li, gold in Athens in 2004, with an Olympic-record score of 208 in the sport's new finals format. Defending Olympic champion Yi Siling, also of China, took the bronze medal.

The youngest of the eight finalists by several years, Thrasher established an early lead after battling with the Russian shooter Daria Vdovina, who stumbled midway through the competition and finished fifth.

Typical gun crazed American.

Yeah really. They shouldn't have events for assault rifles. [8D]

I am still waiting for word on the all intriguing...Olympic badminton.

DaddySatyr -> RE: First Olympic Gold (8/7/2016 1:35:58 AM)

I wish I could get all into a frenzy about the Olympics, like I used to. I have very fond memories of many of the early games (in my life).

I just haven't been able to give a damn since they started allowing professional athletes to compete. I know I'm a dinosaur, but give me a young, determined, out-of-the-ordinary kid from East Moamablovia, killing it.

Mark Spitz, Bruce Jenner, The '80 U.S. Hockey team. I miss those days.

Now i will let u get back to your regularly scheduled dick waving

Ah, right. You know, the fact of this thread being in this forum hadn't actually occurred to me. I'm beginning to understand now.

Uninteresting fact: my friend's dad is the chairman of the Badminton Badminton Club. The sport is named after the town of the same name in Gloucestershire.

Hitler did a cursory meet and greet thing, iirc: it was Roosevelt who blanked him.

Huh ?

You should elaborate on that with some detail or provide a cite because that is not how I got it.

T^T

Here you go:
The Mirror is a fairly shitty paper, but at least it isn't the Fail, and it has a PR piece on the bioflick including an account from Owens' daughter.

Termyn8or -> RE: First Olympic Gold (8/7/2016 6:40:18 AM)

Thanks, but Hitler still did it.

From your link :

"Hitler was Chancellor of Germany and was said to be furious about what he called someone of an “inferior race” challenging his Aryan athletes.

After his victory, the Fuhrer refused to acknowledge Jesse. When the Olympic Committee insisted he shook hands with each winner regardless of nationality, he refused to congratulate anyone."

He fucked up, he had a problem with Jews, not Blacks. He should have been cool with Blacks, who Jews sold into slavery in the first place. And "the colonies" was not the first time.

That Owens was dissed in the US is news to me. I never knew that.

T^T

I think bball and female soccer is like always US's to take for sure.

But looks like Australia is kicking US ass in swimming this year!

We are quite excited about swimming too. Ya know, we can never produce world class athletes, because most parents forbid their children to pursue sports around here. Even if the coach told them, their kid has the talent to go far. They would forbid their kid to practice and insist they focus on their studies.

But one dude, I think because his dad is white, culture difference, more supportive towards his sports development, is having a really good chance to get at least a bronze, and he beat Michael Phelps in 100m Butterfly.

Damn, technically US should be winning all the air guns competitions, but ya got China and Vietnam take gold in them for other categories.

Why ? what is the reasoning behind that ?

It's quite well documented. I'm surprised you'd never heard that one.

They believe the chance of their kid making good money with sports is too slim.
Plus Singapore do not pay their national athletes well.
It's nothing like on the US level. Like there is zero interest in local sports.
You guys could fill stadiums for american football, baseball and basketball.

For us, the local teams all play to empty stadiums, even soccer which is the number 1 favourite sport around here.

You mean that you can't feel the unbridled anticipation as we all wait for the heart-pounding competition of rhythmic gymnastics?

Per a video on the topic, the opening ceremonies: the running of the torch up the stairs to light the main cauldron and the march of nations were first presented in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. (unverified)

I've found that women's brains do it best and actually enjoy it most. In my mind, I relate it to something like the hand to eye coordination that is required for needle point sewing. When taught properly, women just seem to enjoy it and are damn good at it.

So, it's not guns that kill men; it's women's minds.

Hell, that was true before guns were invented. [:D]

Somewhat at a tangent, but there are paralympics going on as well right now and it seems that the entire russian team has been banned for doping....
WTF???
Entire Russian Team Banned From Paralympics in Rio Over Doping

The International Paralympic Committee on Sunday announced it was immediately suspending the entire Russian Paralympic contingent because of a rampant doping scandal.

The move was punishment for the country running a doping operation that polluted sports by prioritizing "medals over morals," according to the IPC.

"This decision has placed a huge burden upon all our shoulders, but it's a decision we've had to take in the best interests of the Paralympic Movement," IPC President Sir Phillip Craven said in a release.

"Ultimately, as the global governing body for the Paralympic Movement, it is our responsibility to ensure fair competition, so that athletes can have confidence that they are competing on a level playing field," he said."This is vital to the integrity and credibility of Paralympic sport, and in order to achieve this it is fundamental that each member abides by the rules."

I don't think so, at least not as of 4:30 p.m. ET on Sunday.
