I saw on youtube, one man comment that, "That girl's legs is thick!"

Then of course women got offended.

And then loads of men defended the dude explaining to the girl that, calling a girl "thick" is a compliment. It means her legs are hot and womanly! The Original person who made that comment also wrote back to confirm it was meant to say she is hot.

I'm just curious in what countries do men use "thick" as a compliment?

I think to most women, that would sound like an insult.

She's a bit "thick", but only in the head.

I've seen it used within these boards in a complimentary fashion, although here in the UK it's not what it's know for.

In Ethiopia it was considered to be a compliment to tell a woman that you noticed she had gained weight.
That's because it meant she had lots of money for food and must be wealthy by Ethiopian standards.

Where I come from, calling someone thick, means they are dense, stupid, not all there and dumb (you're as thick as a brick)
Thick as in size is poor grammar useage and from americans and canadians.
As urban slang, Its still not a compliment in mho, but then neither was phat, or sick
Just my two cents worth

No, over here when we mean fat, we say fat.

Growing up in Detroit, I watched the compliment "thick" migrate from black culture to the hip underground 40 years or so ago. Like "phat", it is compliment on womanly curves. So in the USA, major cities, thick is a most often used as a compliment as far as I know.

In that case it could be one of those complimentary terms that's come back in again. This sort of change of usage can happen with bewildering speed.

It doesn't seem that long ago that I first heard the word 'sick' as a compliment (so good it makes you sick? God knows). That use might have disappeared again for all I know.

Admittedly, phat, pawg, thick and the like are over the borderline for conservative social norms in that they are sexualized comments... but I think your comment does not apply as an across the board rule of thumb, even if applicable to the above terms. Sure, everything is real in the mind of the beholder, to the beholder... but if an insane person sees black as white, it doesn't mean that is true. A person that sees a compliment within social norms as an insult, does not change the fact it was really a compliment.

If a man compliments an angry biased feminist that is truly very pretty, by saying that she looks pretty and she gets pissed at being objectified... the truth is still that she is pretty. So the compliment is real, whether she chooses to take it that way or not.

At least that is how I see it.

For the most part, I'm not pretty. Even when I was younger and thinner, "pretty" wasn't a descriptor. I've always been 'not slender'. for the majority.

Some random dude calling me thick? That's not a compliment.

right, as if intentions don't matter.

or the fact that almost all of humanity's interactions depend on a mutual understanding of words.

greta---its been interesting to see the varied responses, particularly from residentsadist---but in my neck of the woods/world, "thick" is the more or less the modern day version of "chunky" and on the whole, its not complimentary.

Yes it is. I think it is regional and specifically originated from the US but maybe only specific parts. Because after googling too, many websites are claiming that when men say a woman is "thick", it's a compliment, to indicate that she got the perfect ratio of flesh on her bones that men like.

That if a man wanted to insult a woman for being fat, he would never use the word "thick". He'd just say "fat".

Definitely in my part of the world, describing a woman's body part as "thick" would be a clear insult. But ya know, sometimes, cultural differences on what "word" is considered a compliment is interesting.

And after being a part of this forum for many years. What Americans think is normal in America greatly differs from each other too, drastically, depending on where they stay, it seems.

It is a huge country after all.
