Bosco, this issue has obviously triggered feelings in you that us 'commies', as Bounty likes to call us, can't quite grasp. To us it looks trivial; clearly, to you, it's anything but. Your OP looked, to me, as though you didn't much care about the whole thing - in fact, it looked like you'd only posted it in order to make some sort of sneering point that would only resonate with other people who share your minority ultra-right worldview, like bounty.

OK. I now realise that you wanted us 'commies' to take it seriously. But *what*, exactly, do you want us to take seriously? What is the argument you think this issue highlights, and why do you think this ostensibly trivial news item is important? Could you spell it out? What are you asking us to discuss, here?

Twitter sleuths took little time finding Cambridge Public Schools Librarian Liz Phipps Soiero's feed and digging into old posts after she raised eyebrows this week with her public rejection of an honorary gift from the White House of 10 embossed Dr. Seuss books.

Several of the pictures uncovered and reposted by users show Soiero at the school in question -- Cambridgeport Elementary School in Cambridge -- wearing the character's signature red-and-white hat and matching stockings, cradling a Cat in the Hat doll.

By way of explanation, Soiero penned a widely panned open letter to First Lady Melania Trump, which she in part described Seuss's most famed creation as having roots in the days of "blackface minstrelsy," citing a few academic articles on the topic.

The letter was addressed to Trump because the First Lady had sent these book bundles to several dozen schools having "achieved high standards of excellence" to commemorate National Read a Book Day, Sept. 6.


"You may not be aware of this, but Dr. Seuss is a bit of a cliche, a tired and worn ambassador for children's literature," Soiero wrote in her letter, which first expressed gratitude, then criticized the First Lady's taste in children's literature and said the district neither needed nor planned to keep the books.

I can't recall any Dr Seuss books being racist. To my knowledge, every First Lady since Barbara Bush has read Dr Seuss books to children, though I'm not sure which one started sending books to schools.

For the First Lady, this is fluff, but probably some of the most important fluff she can do without having to take a stand on anything, in promoting literacy. Dr Seuss has been a standard for children's reading for generations now, and there is no consensus for that to change.

Now, there were cartoons drawn by Seuss that were anti-Japanese American. So the librarian may have done more research on Suess or read things since her fun costume that have set her off. Since she's not black, I'm going to say she's probably Asian, and may have had her personal connection with Seuss destroyed by finding out he was not too kind to people like her.

There might not be a consensus for change, but that doesn't stop people with an axe to grind complaining about stuff they see as unacceptable not belonging in schools or libraries: nigger Jim or Harry Potter ring any bells? I think the religious right (unbelievably) went through a phase of insisting that Tolkein was a gateway to satanism and the occult back in the '70s. (That said, it's not much more implausible as a claim for Tolkein than it as a claim for Stephen King...)

There is a madman in the white house, and the RWNJs think that an insignificant librarian changing her mind about Dr. Suess is a huge story.
Seriously, even if she is a raging hypocrite who doesn't think for herself, so what?
This is a major threat to society? This is something that has never been seen before?

There is absolutely no value to this story, aside from the fact that it gives assholes like Bosco and bounty an opportunity to prove once again that they are assholes.
This is why it is impossible to have any respect for people like them.
