Ring gags are usually not metallic, or at least never ones that I have seen. Think about it, that would really be difficult in a lot of people's mouths for a number of reasons.

Ring gags are generally hard rubber.

With TMJ, a would say that that sort of gag would be no better for you than a standard-size ball gag.

A variation on a ball-gag might be something along the lines of a wiffle golf ball. If we don't remember our childhoods, wiffle balls were the ones with holes all over them, made out of plastic. A shoelace or something appropriate could be tied to opposing sides of the ball, and tied in back. A wiffle ball this size would be smaller than a ball used in ballgags, and the plastic would be a little more flexible such that you could bring your mouth together more.

Your mileage may vary, however. No partner of mine has ever mentioned TMJ, at least not before they were gagged. After that I wouldn't have been able to understand anyway.

Most ring gags are metal; sometimes they're coated.

It's a control thing. Yes, it's in there. But wouldn't 'you' like to do something with it once it's in there? But you can't, you see. Borders on the humiliating. The only way you get the, um, end result, is to have all of the work done for you. Takes your submission away from you, frustrates you.

I've not come across any that are pure metal. And as nasty and perverse as I can be, I don't think I would get one. I would be afraid of teeth getting chipped, or whatever the coating on the metal might be dissolving in the mouth.

I mean, if something horrible is going to happen, I would prefer it being of my own accord. Humph!

Well, yeah, as I've said, I find them generally pretty useless. Peach says she's finally found a ring wide enough, but she hasn't made a gag out of it yet. We'll see.

Lips aren't essential--your tongue and throat provide ample stimulation, and with the ring gag there is no risk of the inadvertent involvement of your teeth. Of course, some mouths can't accommodate a ring large enough to accommodate their dominant's "delightful object," so this particular point may be moot for some folks.

Of course, there are other less "delightful" things that can be introduced into a ring-gagged mouth, for which the size of the ring is less important. But I do agree that a rubber or leather coated ring is a good idea to protect the teeth.

It depends on how much of a drool factor and effect I'm going for (or what my sub likes/dislikes most -- obviously the choice of a "dislike" factor depends on how good or bad she's been). Of those I've used:

Cloth (or knotted rope) gags are good for muffling speech but not moans/screams/etc. For those who don't like drool, a good choice.

Tape...more fun for kidnapping scenes than anything else.

Ring gags are good for the drool factor and the potential to insert things, allows almost normal (but idiot-sounding) speech and great for moans/screams, etc.

Practice golf balls (wiffle style) are good for drool factor, can fit in most mouths easily (and have holes for shoelace) but are easy to breathe through, prevent speech, muffle some sounds.

Regular ball gags are also good for drool factor and muffling most everything but some have a hard time breathing (or fear of them).

I guess I like them all.

The dental object that holds the mouth open is a retractor. It really does have a functional purpose, and yes it is scary looking.

It really depends on the function of the gag to determine which is best. Most of the time I suspect we all want access to the mouth for some purpose or other.

I have a strong preference for the panel/plug gag -- A wide leather panel on the outside, and a (preferably leather) stuffed plug pushed in between the teeth. Can be worn for a while, and is easy on the TMJ -- one can bite down around the plug -- but rather effective and hard to dislodge.

I am more of a ring gag type of gal. I love this one for play, it allows me to feel like I am helpless, but not suffocated like a full mouth gag would.

I guess just thinking of laying there with my arms bound, ankles tied, and mouth left wide open.. just fills my mind with so many endless yummy possibilities.

Cloth to be used on myself only. Too many pain issues plus TMJ makes pretty much everything else impossible...it's hard to play when you're crying from excruciating pain and you are a hedonist, not a masochist. Cloth works well because that way my teeth can grind against something while not hurting each other.

As for what to use on others...I dislike the mouth-stretchers/rings just because I don't want to see my sub's tonsils (unless it's with my tongue), but if a sub comes to me with a gag they would enjoy being put on them, then I will use it gladly.

My play partner likes using duct tape. I have no problem with this as long as my nose doesn't get stuffed up. If a session is going to be very intense and tears are likely, I prefer a ballgag so I can still breathe.

I just escape, me. Them ballgags are rubbish!, can generally plop them out. Best thing: you get a rubber ball from a toyshop, then a roll of electrical tape and wrap it round and round and and under and over the ears and around actually pushing it up into the 'top shelf' . It makes you look like you're off 'The Simpsons' but who cares. Keeps me quiet and happy.

a cock gag is the best! it shuts you upp with something that looks and feels like a dick...i mean, the humiliating symbolism is wonderful. my least favorite gags are ball gags. Im just tired of seeing em.
