I first started learning about it in school..and I don't think I've fully embraced elements of it still today.

Interesting question. The roots were always there (or at least as long as I remember and as far back as age 5 at the latest), though what it was I had no idea until much later - and I thought I was the only one until then LOL!

I guess it was the odd thing on TV, (usually comedic references), when I started to realise I was not alone, then lots of covert research brought me into contact with the world of bdsm, via respectable psychology books which featured plenty of "stimulating material" in the form of case histories(!) - all under the guise of study of course!, dodgy sex shops and erotic fiction. The internet though, probably provided the biggest leap in education and contact. I should also mention Mistress Lorelei as an important influence - never met her, but her Mistress Manual was vital teaching material for me a while back and a valuable and oft used reference today. (when she will cut me in on some commission I dont know, but thats about the 3rd time I've plugged her book on here now!)

When I was a very young girl I had images come to mind about restraints & whippings that were not feared or unwanted... in these mental images the persons involved were very much enjoying the activities. For many years it never made sense to me & I was often confused. Any movie I saw or book I read that exhibited this activity of restraint, discipline & control didn't appear to be about pleasure. The men & women being whipped were obviously in pain, scared, angry &/or resisting. The person inflicting this was scowling, enraged , reluctant &/or regretful about carrying out this activity.

Eventually I heard my first fetish word & that word lead me on a search for more information. I eventually learned that sadistic & masochistic tendencies were very real & actually common. The only reason it became hidden was because it was deemed as unstable, unhealthy & perverse by a particular segment of society. It become something that individuals had to hide about themselves for fear of being ostracized from "polite" society & locked away in a mental institution so that they may be cured.

So, as to your question... these things you refer to as BDSM were just something I always knew about. It was until later in life that I found out there were names for it all.

T.V. didn't teach me about Bdsm but it made me aware of it.  This site, reading, and a few relationships (some more than others) has taught me about bdsm.  Oh and I'm still learning of course  :)

I think we all must still be learning. I only heard the word "figging" for the first time this week, and only found out what it was yesterday......!

I had had feelings since childhood.

Making this all permanent and being 'taught' WIITWD happened at almost the same instant.  Certainly within the same month.

I've had the urges since childhood and acted upon them with my first boyfriend. I tied him to the headboard while he was asleep and no we hadn't discussed it or negotiated anything. I just thought it would be fun and sexy, luckily he loved it. From there it continued to grow. Since then I've read alot and lived alot, picked up alot of experience along the way.

I am curious for those of you who stated a date you learned or found out, what is the activity that sparked that specific date?

I remember being a little girl and and playing with all the other little neiborhood girls. All of them would be fighting about who would be the princess or queen. I also wanted to be the castle wench. I always knew there was something differnt about in that aspect. When I first realized this lifestyle did exsist outside of my fantasys I was 14 and seeing a shrink about "self punishment" He was a supporter of the bdsm community and found it to be a healthy saine way to deal with issues like mine.

Who taught You about Bdsm,
and when did You fully embrace it?[

The very first person who taught Me about BDSM is a man I was set up on a blind date with.  He happened to be a dominant.  Since I'm not really submissive, it didn't work out.  It did open Me up to wanting to explore the lifestyle more, but on My own terms.  I had absolutely no desire to be owned, controlled, or to serve anyone, though the bottoming part was okay.

After I found My place as a Domme later, I learned about BDSM from books, friends I met online, websites, friends I met in person, demos, seminars, observation, discussion groups, etc.  I also learned much from each and every submissive I owned and even from people I have played with casually.

I fully embraced BDSM Memorial Day weekend 1996.  In fact, I can remember the exact moment.  It was the first time a male submissive kneeled before Me, soley because it was what he wanted.  It was like an awakening and I experienced a sense of euphoria I had not ever felt before in My life.  Prior to that, I had been with dominant males or switches.  Some of them would actually submit to Me, but it was only to appease Me or because they really wanted to top Me and I might let them if they complied with My wishes.

After that weekend, I knew exactly what path I was going to follow and never looked back.  Every relationship since has been with a submissive male.

My former dominant fully informed me what it was to be a submissive although I flirted with the concept sexually since I was in my early 30s. I did not know people lived this way 24-7 until him.

I fully embraced it as he taught me about it, it felt natural to me and made complete sense to me, that was about 4 years ago.

I fell into a bdsm chatroom while looking for cyber sex.

Like others, I'd had kinky inclinations for as long as I could remember, I'd seen kinky magazines, I really got off on Madonna's Justify my Love video...but it had never clicked before that there was thing THING called "bdsm" and that *I* could learn about it before then.

After that though, I was off and running.  That's when I consider myself to have really started learning about bdsm.

I first noticed something flaming within me when my first girlfriend blindfolded me. I knew then there was something more out there.

And that was in umm ohh gee...1985.

Then when she become very dominant to me, ordering me to do unmentionable things, and such, another flicker in the fire. I wanted to please her so badly, and I reached fulfillment when I done so.

I think I always knew even as a child that some people, male and female seemed to have different(submissive??) personalitys and that I seemed to lean more towards those who were willing to serve my personal needs and wants.Donna

I taught myself from early childhood, of my own volition. It is one of the primary reasons I strongly believe submitting to and making slaves of others is a deeply set animal instinct in human creatures.

This 65 year old rubber Dom.  He's now in his 70's and as kinked out as ever.  But we are just friends, although he's still kind of my mentor.  Really nice guy.  He's been there, done that, bought the rubber t-shirt with the built in posture collar.

I don't really know. I think it started out more as a fascination, and now I'm slowly exploring things with my girlfriend. We're both novices to the lifestyle, so there's no one else's training to overcome, and we can find our limits together. I've been trying to learn a lot more, which is the major reason I joined this community.
