It is profoundly sad that the attitude of this nation has gone from the words of The "New Colossus" of "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.  Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp besdide the golden door!" to "If they are in my country illegally, they deserve to die!"  The golden door has slammed shut and a once proud nation is taking a rapid backslide toward the exact kind of tyranny that we used to be the refuge from.

Historically, singling out one ethnic, religious or racial group as the scape goat for the problems of a nation doesn't work out well in the long term.  But if you get everyone foaming at the mouth about the big bad "illegal alien" that is here stealing their coveted fruit picking career possibilities, they are less inclined to question the more subtle shipping of what would be more technical high paying jobs overseas by the actually big, actually bad corporations.

Krys, your Emma Lazarus quote was for people comming to this country Legally. And many of those were sent back from Ellis Island to their own countries due to having TB or other illnesses.
And due to 3 million illegal aliens sneaking into this country every year TB and other diseases that we had eradicated in this country are making a comeback!
Look at what happenned in the Mid-West a few months back!
Do you really think that quote applies to Illegal Aliens?
How about al qeada terrorists?
And if you remember your history you know that that statue in N.Y. harbor is called "Lady Liberty" not Lady Immigration.
I don't believe in the outsourcing of jobs either.
A hundred and twenty years ago this country needed immigration.
That is simply not the case today.
And we decide who comes here and how many come or if we want to discontinue it altogether.
"Immigrants" and "Illegal Aliens" are two different things.
We simply cannot have 20 million or more illegal aliens in this country.

To all those who think that driving at 112mph is not reckless and foolish, can I ask a question?

Would you car pool with someone who drove at that speed?
Would you let your kids go with their friends on a roadtrip, if their friends' parents drove at that speed?

Actually, the sentiment doesn't distinguish, as it wasn't really an issue at the time.  The Illegal Alien Boogieman is a recent scapegoat.

I believe it applies to anyone that comes to this country seeking a better life for themselves and their families.  I do not think that the ability to navigate the long, expensive and difficult task of wading through the process of legal immigration determines a person's quality as a human being or intent, nor do I believe coming here to make a life for one's self and feed one's family makes them an evil person.  The 9/11 Terrorists, for example, entered the country legally on temporary visas.  All but 4 still had valid temporary visas on that day.

And if you remember your history you know that that statue in N.Y. harbor is called "Lady Liberty" not Lady Immigration.

Which actually rather supports my point above.  That being that liberty (for instance, life) should not be determined by the ability to manage the red tape of immigration law.

We DO, however have an estimated 12 million (not 20) illegal immigrants here now.  And, sorry to say, as long as they are a source of cheap and easy to exploit labor, that number will keep growing.  Whether you, personally, feel that the U.S. has reached is population cap, the corporate world is still more than happy to exploit what is so readily at hand, and the market has a lot more power than your voice or vote.

If you want to make an actual change in that, focus more on the corporations and employers that exploit illegal employees and, thusly, provide the enticement to come here in the first place.  Because until that changes, the lip service politicians are currently giving you to sway your vote is about as effective as pissing in the wind.

If they doing that speed on the turnpike with little or no traffic or on an expressway with similar
conditions.  I wouldn't carpool with someone driving 5 miles an hour in Miami rush hour
traffic which is often at a standstill.  At five miles an hour they would plow into hundreds
of cars.   People always cite special, exceptional circumstances that make them right, and
others wrong.   Of course driving 112 miles an hour in everyday traffic is not safe.  No
one said otherwise.  The quetion before us is, is driving at 112 miles an hour always
dangerous.

to be drinking and having sex?

No, the question before us is "Were the actions(driving at 112 miles per hour) of this off duty officer reckless and dangerous?" I'd have to say the fact that people DIED answers that question quite well.

Modern cars are built to be safe at all sorts of speeds.

Modern drivers however, are still being made using the same plans drawn up a few thousand years ago.

Thus, it is unsafe to drive at high speed, and the safety decreases in direct proportion to the increase in speed, because of this mismatch in technology.

Krys, Immigration to *ANY* country is not a "right".
Illegal "immigration" is just that, illegal.
What are you advocating?
Your argument is very weak. (Is Emma Lazarus' poem official govt. policy?)
And what about someone comming here to "feed their family or "making a better life for their family" I didn't realize they had a food shortage in Mexico or Central America, you couldn't tell by looking at the people!
What about someone who wants to come here because they "want a brandnew Chevrolet Corvette?" Yes, I guess having a brandnew Corvette would make for a "better life" don't you?
As for "unalienable rights" if that's the case wouldn't that be "Universal" and apply in all countries?
Also, I am NOT a Democrat OR a Republican and I don't care much for Big Corporations being involved in our govt.
I am an Independant voter ("Not Declared") and I have no use for Republicans or Democrats.
I don't believe in "cheap labor" or "outsourcing" and we really do need to outlaw all those lobbyists on "K" street in Washington.
(They can sit down at their kitchen table like I'm about to do in 20 minutes or so and write to their congressman or senators just like everyone else. They shouldn't have any "special access" to the govt.)
We have a seperation of church and state in our govt and that same seperation should exist between big business and govt.

Tolerance and reason.  And not thinking it is okay to kill people who are here illegally.

LadyEllen, post # 123

LadyEllen, i think we need to remember that Whip is probably a professional race car driver, so it's probably perfectly safe for him to drive at that speed, and even faster.  (yes, i'm being sarcastic)

Seriously, though, speed limits are posted so people know the safe speed for the roadway they are on. If a driver exceeds the speed limit, he puts himself and possibly others in danger. Sometimes, even at the posted speeds, accidents happen.

It's NEVER safe to drive 112 mph. Anyone who thinks otherwise should not be allowed to drive.

BlueHnS -> RE: Off~Duty Vegas Highway Patrolman kiss Illegal Aliens while driving. (10/2/2006 4:01:44 AM)

Forewarning: This is a bit greusome.

My aunt was changing a flat tire on the shoulder of the freeway. The road was flat and straight, the day was warm and sunny. She was behind the car bent over to pick up something or other. I wasn't there but saw the scene later. She was hit, crushed and killed instantly, by a pastor, with enough force to send the parked car into the dividing median two lanes over.
The back seat flipped pinning my cousins beneath it.
No charges were ever filed, no restitution was made on the vehicle, and my family paid for my now orphaned cousins' therapy. (Whomever freed them from beneath the seat lacked the sense not to let them see what was left of their mother laying scattered on the shoulder, front bumper of the truck and back of the car).
Whomever it was that was supposed to decide to file charges or not, opted not to because " G-d would deal with him (the pastor) better than the state could " Case closed.

Laws only work when they are enforced.

I'm a firm believer in Karma monsand thank you for your kind thoughts.
What I'm opposed to is someone being above the law. It doesnt really matter who it is. It makes my ass itch even more when the person who the law doesn't apply to has a title the generally implies it should be respected.  Oh, I forgot, those are the ones who are generally exempt from the law. Don't hear much about society's general masses recieving legal absolution.
