ORIGINAL: twicehappy This group of posters taken individually often post intelligent well thought out polite posts, but together under the scenarios I described above their behavior alters rapidly. A classic example of mob mentality. (After this brief mention I'll set aside that your research is founded on the false dichotomy I pointed out in my last post as I think the treatment of that issue there was adequate) Falacious underpinnings aside, that's some hypothesis you have there. Take a certain expression, like "Twue". If someone frequently utters it in a conversation where other people are uttering it, whereas they don't use it quite generally in other conversations, they are judged guilty of mob mentality. I very seldom use the word "soccer" in posts. If I post to a thread in which Katylied and Saddam Hussein and the rest of E1956's lynch mob are talking about soccer---and I use the word too--am I again guilty of mob mentality? Because that conclusion is entailed by your theory. Or is it simply the case that when a given topic comes up, the word which names that topic is going to appear more often than at other times? You haven't made a mountain out of a molehill, twicehappy, but out of a molecule. And how about the mob-like use of expressions like "true submissive" or "real dominant". Did you do any research on those? If mistoferin uses these terms more often in conversations where other people are using them than she does when the topic is, say, the weather, is she and are they all guilty of mob mentality also? The kind of statistical results you claim to be getting, twicehappy--however strong or weak your methodology may be--are exactly what should be expected for any word or expression taken at random. The less common the word (or expression) the stronger would be the trend. If you had found any result whatsoever except the one you note, it would actually have been potentially interesting. It is hard to imagine any research results less significant that those you have cited. Left alone in good soil with adequate air, water and light, grass grows. These new findings confirm my suspicion that grass is mean-spirited and out to get me. According to my calculations that was about one percent sillier than your observations and conclusions. Yeah I think there is something that deserves to be called mob mentality. Yeah as a matter of fact I think that you and your friends have been victimized by it in these boards on certain occasions and to certain degrees--and tha i's unfortunate and doesn't speak well of the mobbers. I have also seen you and your familiars along with others habitually sympathetic to you mob up on others. You know. Just an observation. In any event: your research, viewed with care, sheds no light on the subject whatsoever.
