FelinePersuasion -> Benadryl making people feel druged and not in positive ways. (11/12/2006 1:54:29 PM)

I have noticed that when ever I take benadryl  I end up feeling like total shit. Sleepy drugged lethargic. Well this morning I had no choice because the moskito bite hurt an itched and kept me from sleeping. I felt like I had been ran over by a mac semi truck. I was sleepy I was incoherent, and I was extreamly lethargic and incapable of feeling anything but a deep drugged need to go back to bed.

Is this what benadryl usualy does to most people? if so why?

Drowsiness has got to be the No. 1 side effect of Benadryl.  In fact, I'm pretty sure the package says not to drive or operate heavy machinery after taking it.

Some people take Benadryl as a sleep aid, although I think that's dangerous.

Edited to add: I guess it's not so dangerous after all.  This is informative:

It sure does for me, its as good as any prescription sleeping pill, knocks me out for a good 8 hours.  And I know we're not alone, because the exact same active ingredient, diphenhydramine, is widely sold as a sleep aid.  Next time you are in a drug store, look at the labels of OTC sleep medicines.  Most are diphenhydramine, that is, Benadryl.

Benadryl as people have pointed out is diphenhydramine.   Tylenol PM is acetaminophen (Tylenol) and diphenhydramine.  Diphehyramine makes most people sleepy/drowsy, though as pointed out, a small percentage have the opposite effect and get “wired.”  People suffering from fybromyalgia often have trouble getting to sleep, and diphenhydramine is often useful to them.   It is a powerful antihistamine, and a “high sedative” thus it’s tendency to make one sleepy.  OSHA does not allow its use in industry if an employee is using or operating dangerous machinery.   The adult dose is usually 50 milligrams, or two tablets.  From my experience I would have recommended (assuming a relatively minor allergic reaction with no systemic symptoms) 12.5 milligrams, from a bottle of children’s liquid Benadryl.  I would have also suggested Benadryl ointment.  This is a topical ointment that relieves itch without systemic affects.  Simply put 50 milligrams (I suspect that you took two tabs) or even 25 milligrams was too much.   Disclaimer: If any allergy reaction causes fullness in throat, difficulty breathing, behavior changes, or other serious symptoms, call 911.  Also, never, ever use diphenhydramine on a child under age one.  See your medical practitioner for children aged 1 to 18.

when my daughter was in the hospital they gave her bendryal to sleep they use it as sleeping pills works great for that I use it as well. They make a lotion that may work better for you

I use benadryl as a sleep aid - although rarely.  The last time I did was when I had to do day shift for a week of orientation, and since I don't sleep at night, this was a problem.  I used the benadryl each night, and up until the last day, I was ok ... then it caught up to me and I had that dragged out, run-over-by-a-truck feeling.

It happens.

Benadryl is known as the poor man's sleeping pill.

Lotion would be fine if it was one bite. I had 5 and more poping up all over me. I didn't see or hear the moskito, I know it was one cause they're in the house, and on one of the bites t my hand I saw it, and bam suddenly 4 spots all at once on my body simultaniously all itchy all at once.

Nyquil has the same effect on me.  I used to say good night as I was drinking it.  But then again that was one of the sought after effects of it.  Sleep and heal.

Benedryl is what is in over the counter sleep meds. It knocks me out. I cannot take it for allergies, if I want to be coherent. We also give it to lightly "sedate" someone prior to knocking them out for a procedure sometimes.

Will the benadryl sprays and lotions help prevent itching from any new bites, like the pill form seems to? I'm thinking of getting some kind of liqiod moskito repellant ment for wear an put it on.

sweetnurseBBW -> RE: Benadryl making people feel druged and not in positive ways. (11/12/2006 7:35:04 PM)

Calamine works good also. The sprays and lotions do not have benedryl in them.

The best thing I know for mosquito bites or any bug bite is Badger's 100% Natural Anti-Bug Balm.  It is a combination of citronella, cedar, rosemary, geranium, beeswax & castor oils.  It comes in a roll-on applicator and it is soooooooo effective.  I would say it's da balm... but someone would groan at my bad pun.  You can find it at www.badgerbalm.com.  ps. I have no vested interest in this company and this is not an advertisement.  I just like the stuff.

Take the children's dosage, I do that for cold meds as otherwise I'm knocked out. Tylenol PM is only taken here when I've got ten hours to sleep and nothing else to do the next day.

diamonddreamlove -> RE: Benadryl making people feel druged and not in positive ways. (11/13/2006 12:21:54 AM)

If i took the adult dosage i would be out for minimum 12 hours.  I have done that and it is not a good thing.  So when i needed it my pharmacist husband always gave me half the dosage.

**Caution, the following is not intended as a replacement for advice from a trained physician...just My experience and what I've learned.

As many have said, being drowsy after a dose of Benadryl is quite common.  The over the counter sleep aid that has Benadryl is quite safe to take..in fact it's one of the very few sleep aids that isn't habit forming.

Unless you are having a systemic reaction of bug bites, and the itching is just localized, taking Benadryl by mouth is a bit of overkill as you found out.  Oral Benadryl will effect your entire system, whereas Benadryl cream will be mainly restricted to where you apply it. (Caution, some will enter the blood stream, so NEVER use both oral and topical Benadryl at the same time)  This method works only if the affected areas are not near the eyes..you don't want to put any medication not intended for the eyes near them.

My son has multiple severe, life-threatening allergies--Benadryl is a Godsend.  There are times when he has to take it almost daily...this can be a real problem as it often is in school.   Typically what I do, is give him half the recommended dosage, and wait 15 min (we always use the liquid form, it's absorbed more quickly, and when you are having a systemic allergic reaction, that's what you want)  If after 15 min there isn't satisfactory improvement, then I will give him the rest of the full dose.
