Why folks??? Why would anyone take a shot at something that they had very little chance of hitting? Why would anyone take shots at a deer that is running full tilt through dense woods?

Why would anyone shoot such a beautiful deer at all?
Its cruel and barbaric and i'm glad neither of you got the shot.

Agreed.

Whilst i see what you are saying, i don't go out and kill deer just for the kill, a lot of people do. In fact i've never hunted and never will. I was a vegan for a while but due to health reasons i was unable to continue with it. I hate the thought of anything dieing in cruel circumstances and yes i've seen slaughter houses etc.
I do support animal conservation financially yes. I mainly donate to a donkey sanctuary in Nerja in Spain. There are donkeys and horses there that so badly need medical attention and help with feeding. Unfortunatley in this country we don't have the sprawling forests etc which you do for me to put my time into these things. The nearest place to me would probably be an hour away or more away and i dont drive.
I will never agree with hunting for the sport of it ever. I know you eat your kill and as betacoywolf said some even donate there kill which is good. I'm not making you out as a bad person but i have a right to an opinion on the subject of hunting and im not naive and whether i am a vegan or not my opinion should be espected just as i respect yours.
Just out of curiosity you said that killing them is vital to their conservation - how?

Well said, and Mizsuz added to the point.

If you're killing an animal to feed yourself or others that's one thing.  If you kill to stock your den with trophies, that's another.

Personally, I'm just a softy when it comes to animals.  (I saw Bambi about 10 years ago and I cried all over again).  I actually will take spiders, bees, etc. out of my house and gently set them outside.

Yeah, yeah yeah...I know...someone actually has to kill that cow that comes wrapped with a fresh bar code at Krogers, but somehow running around in their house shooting at these gorgeous creatures where you know they have to be thinking "what the fuck, over?" just doesn't seem right.

Now, in business, crushing a competitor until he's bleeding from the ears....now THAT's fun!

(Now if I could just figure out a legal way I could stuff him and mount him on my wall...)

twicehappy -> RE: A hunting story/Rant (11/28/2006 3:18:31 AM)

Kudos Erin for getting your deer, big grins !!!

So if i send you the recipe will you make some deer bologna?

mistoferin -> RE: A hunting story/Rant (11/28/2006 3:29:03 AM)

Thanks twice! We might be able to work something out on the bologna thing....lol.

edited to add:
I'd like to do my own hide this year. I know that you have lots of info on the "old ways" of doing things....anything in your bag of tricks on tanning?

twicehappy -> RE: A hunting story/Rant (11/28/2006 8:32:40 AM)

Strech the hide out and peg it tpo the ground, then scape it until all of the flesh and inner lining of the skin is gone. Then boil the deer's brains with wood ash from a fire until you have a thick paste.

Start rubbing this paste into the hairless side using a large smooth river rock. Roll it up and let it soak in a few days, scrape and repeat until you have a smooth supple piece of hide.

Then pin it in a cone shape and hang it over a white cedar log that has been set fire then let go to smouldering, use young cedar for a lighter skin, older wood for a darker skin. Smoke it for about an hour.

This produces some of the softest hide you will ever touch.

If you want to die or dehair it just ask.

Thank you....just one more question.....during the scraping process do I salt the hide?

Not sure about deer hide but on coyote hide the fur buyers won't buy a hide that has been salted..... it messes up the tanning process (ie. the hide won't properly take the tanning solution). The only areas that you can use salt on a coyote hide are around the ears,nose,feet,claws. The salt is used to dry out the fat that cannot be fleshed out. The secret to a properly tanned hide is to properly flesh the hide. Used to trap alot of yotes and the price has fallen so much that I started tanning myself and selling to tourists and friends. I've tried the fancy "home tanning" kits with success but they are kinda pricey so I tried the old salt/alum method and had good luck with it...not quite a "garment quality" tan but great for draping over the couch,etc. I could be wrong but I think the recipe is 4 parts salt to 1 part alum but the amounts would have to be adjusted for the size of your hide? Also soak times. This info I've mentioned as also pertaining to "hair on" hides....never done anything buckskin. I would go to some taxidermy sites for some good up to date info. There are soooo many ways to tan hides and all have their advantages and disadvantages. The salt/alum has been used forever and you can go down to the store and buy the stuff. Congrats on your deer......

PS....didn't read the whole thread but after reading Twices post it sounds like you're after buckskin...??? If so...flesh that hide good with hair on....throw it in the creek for a few days checking periodicaly for the hair to start slipping....after it slips easily it's time to remove from the creek and remove the rest by hand...then start the working/tanning.....

Archer -> RE: A hunting story/Rant (11/28/2006 10:30:55 AM)

mistoferin you might google up "Primative Skills" and they will have alot of good information on tanning hides. Alot of other cool skills as well

liks2plzlf -> RE: A hunting story/Rant (11/28/2006 2:13:03 PM)

Damn!  I love women who hunt.  Any older, dominant woman out there, who like to hunt, and are looking for a sub?

wild1cfl -> RE: A hunting story/Rant (11/28/2006 2:19:41 PM)

Yes my wife was always ready to go hunting or fishing when we were younger, we ahve both slowed down a lot now, but I think we could still get her out for some hunting every now and then

No, do not use salt. Lmao, i'll call you and explain it.

I watched this process with great interest as my youngest learned it from her clan mother. She joined to learn about the Indian half of her heritage.

I can also teach you how to make great permanent tooth picks from raccoon penises.

ST54, i did not give her the recipe for buckskin, just for tanning with the hair on. For buckskin she would soak the hide in concentrated urine and water until the hair was falling out and scrapable on both sides.

The brains really do make a lovely soft hide.

You are correct about needing to scape very very well before starting the tanning process though.

Salt and alum would not be the very old way to tan the hide.

Any particular reason for wanting to do it the old, messy, stinky, hard-to-do way when there are so many easier ways....??? Just kinda curious...???? Kinda like putting out  a potential european mount (skull and horns) out on an anthill and taking months while having to stake it down so animals won't pack it off/chew it up and protecting the horns so they won't bleach,etc. when all you have to do is boil the skull....ad some bleach...and basically be done with it in a day? Why the hard way...????

Maybe I'm outta line as I didn't read the whole thread? If so...sorry for buttin in.....

Don't know if you saw a post I made the other day regarding you in particular (it was good...lol) but I'll say it again if you missed it....I just scored a '39 knuckle..woo hoo!

ShreveportMaster -> RE: A hunting story/Rant (11/30/2006 10:39:37 AM)

 St,
Some folks just like to do things the old fashioned way, just to know they can, and to have the knowledge to preserve the traditions. It's not for everybody, you either get it, or you don't.

                                                                                           I wish you well,

LOL....yes I am aware that there are much easier ways of accomplishing the same goal. If I was looking for real easy I could ship it off to the taxidermist as I have done in the past. I guess it's kind of the same reasons I don't just skip the hunting part and opt for the easier pre-packaged meat at the grocery store. All of the work gives me a greater appreciation for the life lost and the meat on my table. I know that won't make sense to many here..but it's kind of a spiritual thing.

I have hunted the deer, cleaned and skinned it. I have processed the meat. I have rendered the tallow for later use on leather goods and in soap. I used the scrap from the rendering process to make suet blocks to feed the birds. I am processing the tendons or sinew for use as lacing. I have taken the remainder of the carcass back to the woods so that other animals may live from it. It now only makes sense to me to tan the hides in the most natural way.. It has always been something I have had an interest in learning....particularly the brain tanning method. I realize that it is ALOT of work...but for me, that is part of the appeal.

The end product will be one that will be made into things that are useful and serve purpose for me for many years to come and will also serve as a reminder to me to be thankful for the life sacrificed.

PS....It took me years to find the "right" one at the "right" price and I just found it so I knew I'd kick myself for years if I didn't jump on it....

Everyone doing ok over there.....?????

mnottertail -> RE: A hunting story/Rant (11/30/2006 5:44:40 PM)

Salt is fine when there is some time to work it and there is alotta for lack of a better word (gut) left on the skin, to keep it from festering, cold helps.........just like curing meat, but if you salt it, you are going to be rubbing it in the hide and stiffening and losing all the  great lanolin and other nifty stain repelling, softening, smelling, yadda yadda yadda qualities........but if you are pretty far gone, and you can get acorns (high tannin content) and soak it in oak water, it comes back some.
